February 3, 20169 yr I couldn't help but notice that a lot of the countries that would like Against the Current hadn't been revealed yet :P Is now when the slayage starts? (stunned it was doing so badly for so long though). Allie X would be a very meh winner and this Aeroche song really isn't their best :( would much rather N DNTN gets up there, or Jadakissnia/Persephonia just for the complete surprise (really did not see that coming especially the latter :o damn at this being one of their rare entries I wasn't fully behind). Or What can get back there, loved seeing them winning briefly. Edited February 3, 20169 yr by Chez Wombat

February 3, 20169 yr Author 45/62 - Seyetana zf--ISBmLno Hello, here are the essays from Seyetana. If you think they are too long, please scroll to the bottom, where a full list of my votes in an easy to read format will be found. Then you’d better come back here and finish reading, bitches xx 18 What // Kontrust 'Sock N Doll' Perhaps it was partly to do with not listening carefully enough to Kontrust, and as such not seeing the potential in ‘Sock N Doll’ (incidentally I think I focused on ‘Hey DJ’ and ‘Just Propaganda’ more and they are… less suitable), but I had filed Kontrust in my list as ‘send this band when you really want a DNQ and just want to impress people by getting them talking about what an out-there entry you’ve sent’. And in nearly 50 BJSCs, I’ve only ever ONCE sent an entry with the purpose of doing that. It’s not something I tend to aim for, I like to at least think I’m going to qualify most of the time, if not lying to myself that I’m definitely winning this time. But ‘Sock N Doll’ is something else entirely, I’m not entirely sure how to describe it, metal, yet pop, yet a dance anthem, yet all of those at once. So many people taking to it, so many people talking about it, so many people getting “slain” by it, I really hope you’ve voted. Because this is so so easily my eighteen. Every single time. Thank you very much for the discovery and teaching me that you shouldn’t write off bands like Kontrust, they’re always capable of surprising you. 15 Persephonia // The Shanghai Restoration Project feat. Zhang Le 'The Wandering Songstress' Oh Bre, you’re really tapping into my love of vaguely haunting Asian-esque sounds this month. It always is the Asians from you these days that end up getting my highest points, they make for your most interesting songs. Maybe. I swear I’m not positively discriminating without a good reason. Utter beauty of a discovery, this needs to be a surprise smash. The thing is, this song is timeless. It could have been recorded at any point in the last thousand years, barring the lack of acceptable equipment to do that for most of that time period, and that vibe makes it feel so so special. If any song were to capture the spirit of Old World China, I’d say it has to be this one, you can feel the culture in it. Maybe the video helps with that, but I imagine something even earlier, rowing down the Yangtze Delta, past 18th century huts, traditional instruments playing and this song carrying on the breeze. 13 Danaelanda // TheFatRat feat. Laura Brehm 'Monody' Often I dislike giving high marks to the pre-contest favourites. This is because it feels like it’ll look like I’m just following what the crowd thinks is going to win, especially if I give high points to more than one, and, because I always desire unpredictability in BJSC results and less of the pre-ordained coronations, I’d much rather have a favourite that goes against the favourite of the odds. But obviously, that doesn’t get in the way of actually liking a song and ranking things on quality which we’re all here for, and Monody is pretty glorious, where modern dance meets my love of fantastical themes. In fact, it also had to survive not only being a favourite but also a song I knew well before the contest, and was going to send before Requiem came along, captured my heart, and convinced me that it was far more of a winner than this was ever going to be. So in being a great enough song to survive that double whammy, it really deserves these points. Incidentally, has anyone but me noticed the similarity in definition of ‘Requiem’ and ‘Monody’, both songs sung for the dead, and both, in this contest, uplifting dance? So there may be plenty of salt from me if it (it’s clearly going to) does well tonight, but on a song level, man, this is undeniable. It’s all the best parts of Windfall made slightly more ethereal, yet adding an undercurrent of building glory and some beautiful vocals to make it even more essential. Go get those points, Dan. 12 Hendinia // Against The Current 'Outsiders' Well. I am so very encouraged that PVRIS wasn’t a one off, Meg Myers, this getting so far in the odds, it’s a sign that BJSC has changed for the better, and that, one day, a song I am able to send, can become the winner. Outsiders hasn’t yet but I’d be surprised at this point. I’m definitely harbouring some mixed feelings though (read: yet more salt), I mean, basically what I said for Monody about favourites applies to this too. Once, just once, on record, before it gets forgotten by everyone bar me, Paralyzed is a better song than this, and perhaps could have won in a less strong field. Yet, I can see, and appreciate why Outsiders is getting everything going right for it, it’s a perfect balance of Paramore-esque pop-rock and that Lights-esque electropop needed to get everyone (or at least me) falling in love with it. And it is pretty amazing, and because I want to be honest in the main contests as much as I feel I can, it deserves these points. So, the fact we have songs I could have sent winning aside, let’s make Against The Current the first Séyetan act to go into the winner’s ranks. 11 Oslol // Ryuichi Sakamoto 'Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence' There have been quite a few songs I’m very glad got through to the final, and am amazed at the same time that they managed it, but none quite more so than this. I suppose there’s an element of familiarity to it for some but I had no idea this existed before this, and I have found out in the last few months that I can so easily get addicted to the piano instrumentals so many Japanese entertainment productions use, because they’re so emotional, and as such seeing this get so much love is a confidence boost for maybe possibly sending a great one of those in the future. I guess it’s the way it feels so abstract from everything, like the pianist and the other instruments are playing a melody higher than you or I. A real grower I’m pleased to be able to point. 10 FSR Rontvia // Pegboard Nerds 'Emoji' I still remember Pegboard Nerds with fondness from the Unknown Pleasures I hosted, they’re a dubstep duo with some pretty great skill on the drops, and like that song back in UP, that is the most excellent part of this song, that three times, you get build up in a really summery and happy track, then at just the right point it smashes down in a twisted cacophony of sounds, and it slightly changes (to match the video) the mood of each drop. It’s really quite addictive. Actually another Rontvia entry I’d say sounds like a future hit if we were still doing dubstep anywhere. 09 Federal Republic of Ashton // Us The Duo 'Slow Down Time' So Ashvia are together in this round. From me at least, both of you have sent great tracks. Onto Ashton now, who with Us The Duo have this sort of pop that feels quite Lights-esque to me, maybe a bit of He Is We there too, so that’s a hit as it’s the right style of pop for me to adore it. The lyrics are incredibly sweet and beautiful, the duo is used to great effect, it’s hard to get pop anymore up my street than this. 08 Trifoski // Great Good Fine Ok 'Take It Or Leave It' #psychic7iswrong #trifoskialwayssmash #theagendaisdead #certaintop10hit #greatgoodfineokequalsgreatresult #notgoodresult #notfineresult #notokresult #thisisahugetunebutnowivecommittedtothehashtagthemeifeellikeihavetofollowitthrough #sevenwillsmash #markmywords 07 Taahino // Tonight Alive 'How Does It Feel? This feels absurdly low for Tonight Alive, I hope this works Lindsey, this needs to do well because I mean, Tonight Alive! They are a brilliant band. I would say that this particular track isn’t them at the point where I’ve most loved them, but that counts for it being still a very good and enjoyable track. I mean, part of the reason it’s so low is because I cannot budge any of the songs above it out of the way, so there is that to consider. Jenna’s vocals are still a powerhouse on this song and it’s giving off some very pleasant rock vibes. Really is time for people to take notice of Taahino already. 06 Jadakissnia // Sonia y Selena 'Yo Quiero Bailar' I wish I could explain why I like a 2001 Eurovision Spanish reject as much as I do. I guess it’s so happy, upbeat, pleasant, incredibly nostalgic for that time in music even though I had no idea it existed at the time, and best of all, it has some lovely Latin vibes mixed in with those pop sensibilities to produce something that, while not being the most credible, is definitely something I’ve enjoyed discovering a lot this contest. 05 Ethanola // Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Orchestra 'Too Much Information (Laolu Remix)' Ethan, you’ve finally done it. You’ve found a long dance song that I really quite like. Despite the sheer length of the track (my entry is nearly as gargantuan to be honest), this keeps my interest very well and becomes very exquisite from about the 2 minute mark all the way down to minute 7. Bop. 04 Ultraviolenceland // Nimmo 'Dilute This' I like this sort of Ultraviolenceland. I actually thought this might not do very well but perhaps I’ll be wrong on that, it’s a welcome change from your English language pop entries (because nothing’s beating Je Te Suivrai as of yet) and it’s very nice to be able to point you again Ultra. Some lovely cool indie vibes with all kinds of influences in there. 03 Beaverdonia // Alfons – Ganjaman I KIND OF HAD TO. I mean, this is just undeniable in its bizarreness. Even if it is slightly unoriginal, it’s a more entertaining prospect than Albatraoz. 02 Dobago // Imany 'Don't Be So Shy (Filatov & Karas Remix)' Dobago continue their streak of getting low points from me with another beautiful slice of slightly shameful Eurodance. I’m definitely not complaining. 01 Desbuanda // Sofi Tukker 'Matadora' Oh, such a grower and it only gets to 1 point. I feel slightly bad that it can only get there because I think it has to be my biggest opinion change this contest, didn’t think much of it at first but it has such beautiful instrumentation that this week I really couldn’t ignore it. So glad it managed to qualify without my help. Commisserations to Daehun, I normally manage to fit the K-Pop song in there but it just got kicked out this time, sorry Yu, as well as N DNTN especially, because I liked that way more than I thought I would. Singerpurear, Deandria, Land Of DW and Greenfroze also came close. 18 What // Kontrust 'Sock N Doll' 15 Persephonia // The Shanghai Restoration Project feat. February 3, 20169 yr <3 Seyetana It was me who sent Pegboard Nerds to Unknown Pleasures all those years ago too *.* It flopped pretty spectacularly but then it was a dubstep cover of a Danish language MOR song, gorgeous but pretty lacking in widespread appeal.
