Two songs now that deal with very similar subject matters but that do it in completely different ways. The first, from 'Ray of Light' is the huge Frozen. The lead single from the album, the song is a mid-tempo ballad that tells the tale of a frozen out, cold hearted entity that is slowly and sensually warmed by the sultry tones of Madonna. It is often deemed as one of Madonna's strongest tracks, both critically and commercially a success and accompanied by a haunting video that perfectly captured the mood and tone of the song.

 

Against it is the uplifting, feel-good gem from 'True Blue'. The fourth single from the album Open Your Heart is also about awakening someone's love and heart but does so in a cheery, dance-pop style that completely contrasts that of the other song. A simple song in many ways, but it thrives on this and hides nothing as it explores the desire to make someone fall in love and it's so wondrously fun and energetic that it's enough to melt anyone's heart. The video is more complex - featuring Madonna as an exotic dancer being peeped on and observed by on-lookers, including, quite controversially, a child.

 

Both songs explore similar themes in different ways and go to show the extent to which Madonna can transform herself and explore similar issues in totally contrasting ways. But which song melts your heart more?

It's 'Frozen' with ease that wins this, it's just spellbinding. I'd probably call them both 10/10s though (maybe 'Open Your Heart' a 9, unsure). I always thought of 'Open Your Heart' as a bit stalkerish lyrically. :lol:

Open Your Heart. I couldn't deny something so joyous, catchy and easy to sing along to.

Frozen was always my top Madonna track for years but I think OYH has now overtaken it for me, the latter is just so much fun that you can't help but bop to it. True Blue is on par with OYH for me too.

I've never been a huge fan of Frozen. It couldn't have been anything other than lead single from the album of course, it's an enormous statement piece and the video makes it one of the defining moments of her career, but it's not the best song. Open Your Heart, on the other hand, is just so infectious and joyous it's impossible to deny.
