July 1, 201610 yr It must be quite a while since a non-dead person had 3 albums in the Top 12. Did Kate Bush do it in 2014? She had three in the Top 20 - The Whole Story at #6, Hounds of Love at #9 and 50 Words for Snow at #20.
July 2, 201610 yr A Bieber free Top 40 :o when was the last time that was the case? The week of 19-25 April 2015. Where Are U Now went to number 32 the following week and until now he'd not gone a single week without one of his four hits in the top 40.
July 2, 201610 yr Just realised MO are #89 - Didn't think they would ever trouble the charts again TBH! Would love to see them finally get a hit!
July 2, 201610 yr Interesting stuff in James Masterton's commentary about Drake: The continuing stagancy of the Top 10 and the epic Number One run of One Dance means that people continue to bend my ear about the perceived shortcomings of "the singles chart" (as if it was a living breathing entity in itself) or more accurately the methodology used to compile it. I've never seen it my place to take a stance one way or the other, save to note that for all the frustration that its streaming lead has left Drake marooned at the top of the singles chart long after the actual sales life of the single has taken a dip, Once Dance remains for now a Top 10 hit single on the sales rankings. It isn't as if people are streaming it outside of any other market appeal it may have. The record continues to be purchased in some numbers, it is just a freak of nature (and some very poor competition) that leaves it without a solid contender at Number One. That is not to say other's haven't been more strident. Some of the stakeholders of the Official Charts Company have apparently been getting restless, questioning whether the formula and sales:streams ratio which was carefully calculated back in the summer of 2014 to properly reflect the shape of the competing markets hasn't now been rendered out of date by the seismic shift that has occurred since with an exponential rise in music listening and a still gentle decline in the act of monetary purchase. Word reaches me from an impeccable industry source that we might well be about to see an adjustment to the aforementioned ratio, at least where singles are concerned. You heard it here first. Could the streaming ratio be about to change to give purchased songs more of a chance in the chart? :o I guess the business value of the chart is decreasing quickly, seeing as there are stakeholders involved, as Masterton mentions. It certainly seems that nobody particularly cares about it anymore (I care a lot less about it and I used to be obsessed with following the chart, it's just too dull and slow to care about now). Edited July 2, 201610 yr by gooddelta
July 2, 201610 yr Not gonna lie, I would be here for a change in the ratio, just to make it easier for fresh music to do well in the chart. However, I won't be losing sleep if it isn't changed, consistency would be good I guess.
July 2, 201610 yr Author Why would the industry want to change the ratio though? Just because they're annoyed at Drake being number one for ages or does 100 streams not create the same revenue as one sale anymore? (Or ever?) Would be interesting to see how a, say 150-1 ratio would change things - though I don't like the idea of the OCC being inconsistent with ratios as time goes on.

Presumably to liven it up a bit to reinvigorate interest in something that is dying quickly in terms of impact and general interest. It doesn't personally bother me much if they change it or not but I can't help but feel for the likes of Kungs and JT who have outsold Drake hugely for weeks on end and only ended up very slightly behind on the combined chart. Even a 150-1 ratio would have meant both of those acts had topped the chart, I personally prefer the Australian 185-1 ratio bit can't remember how that's worked out, is it also based on revenue there? Edited July 2, 201610 yr by gooddelta
July 2, 201610 yr There's no denying that Drake's song is super popular but Kungs and JT being denied #1 is crazy as their songs are also hugely popular. I'd love if we could have a chart more like Australia's, streaming has an impact but it's not too difficult for new music to break in.
July 2, 201610 yr Author well I'm personally very annoyed that Kungs got denied a #1 (with it being my fave song at the moment) but I'd be even more annoyed if the OCC changed the streaming ratio in the next month or so meaning Kungs would have been a *really* unlucky #2.
July 2, 201610 yr Author though having said that, it appears the 100-1 ratio *does* give streaming more credit than it deserves, just having done some research. According to this graphic, an artist makes $0.23 from a download from iTunes and $0.0011 from a stream on Spotify. 0.23 / 0.0011 = 209 Other streaming services pay slightly more, except YouTube which doesn't count to the chart anyway. So if anything the ratio should be closer to 200-1, but I also really hate chart inconsistency, and I very much doubt the OCC would re-run old charts with the new ratio.
July 2, 201610 yr I would find it better to increase to 150:1 to give fresh music a chance to get to #1, instead of having an act hogging the #1 spot for 10 weeks plus, I don't mind it as a one-off, but if other acts stay longer at #1 in a year. I can just imagine 7 to 10 #1s per year, and that is awful in my opinion.
July 2, 201610 yr Inconsistency is annoying but sadly the chart has been anything but over the years, as we can see from the different formats available and the buying habits of the public. I totally get you though Dan, it will be a bit annoying for comparisons, but I think changing the ratio will be much better for the chart in the long run, with new music being better reflected.
