Well that is now the end. :o It's been just over 2 years since we started but we finally got here. A big thanks to The Snake and Midge for helping (and Ethan earlier on) and the rest of you for getting this thread way past 100 pages, that's the most comments on any topic in the UK chart forum including the 90s version of this and the 'one hit wonders of the millennium' thread.

We will consider starting a thread for the 2010s in the near future if there is demand for one but at least a few weeks' break will take place first, so not much different to the multiple hiatuses this thread took in the last 2 years :kink:

Below is the full reference so you can read the commentary for each dance number one of the decade again or for the first time if you haven't fully caught up with the thread. You can also listen to most of the songs in this Spotify playlist.

More stats to come.

Glad you managed to finish this huge project!

The early to mid 2010s were an excellent period for dance music so I would definitely support a 2010s thread.

Thanks to everyone who put this together. Has been a fantastic read and will definitely look forward to a 2010’s thread.

2000 is my favourite year for dance in the 00s definitely, followed by 2002, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2006 in that order!

Yep up to the end of 2015 and then it (mostly) went downhill rapidly imo.

I didn't really like 2013-2015 dance msuic much at the time, with some exceptions, but it sounds much better now so will be good to revisit in a future 10s thread.

Finally, apologies to danG for being the main one responsible for this thread taking so long :(

Yeah, everything before 2015 was just getting more and more superb every year (2013/2014 being my favourite years for dance imo). It definitely went down after that, I agree.

commercial dance music definitely peaked around 2013-4 for me, now I still love current dance music but mostly the stuff that doesn't make the chart.
Thanks to everybody for the thread! A 2010s version would be good, although I suspect there will be a lot more tricky decisions on which tracks are eligible.

danG would hate having that debate with me over songs of the past couple of years, I'd imagine :P

I wonder what will happen with Clean Bandit, because some of theirs probably aren't and some of theirs probably are

I'm not sure I'd call anything dance since "Tears", though I guess "Symphony" could be considered it. They've morphed into a modern pop act.

I can't believe you actually finished this! xx (I've been intermittently reading bits of it over the years, congrats on making your way through it. If you start a 2010s thread now then the decade will probably be over by the time you finish it :D)

'Symphony' I would include. It actually reminds me of something like Tears for Fears' Mad World, the dance beat only really comes in when it gets going!

Although I am not sure if the likes of Jonas Blue's 'Rise' would be included.

I would include Jonas Blue, Clean Bandit, as they are definitely dance producers even if very commercial and poppy.

"Rise" and "Solo" are the definition of a pop song in 2018 I think. "Rise" could easily be by a boyband. "Solo" could easily be by a popstar.

Early 2010s examples are the David Guetta produced "Commander" by Kelly Rowland... or "Only Girl (In The World)" by Rihanna... or the Calvin Harris produced "Call My Name" by Cheryl Cole... what would we call these? Pop songs or dance songs? (Damn those 3 are great songs!)

Its rather like the 80s before 1988 now in terms of chart dance, loads of songs back then were considered dance that sound more dancepop or pop to our ears now

Kelis' Acapella too....

The official dance chart also included Emeli Sandé's Heaven as a number one, which is borderline pop as well, would that count here? And would you really include Rockabye to take months up between 2016 and 2017?

This is definitely the decade that blurred the lines between dance and pop I feel. I find it hard to decipher sometimes. I don't see all songs a DJ produces as being a dance song. Calvin's "Funk Wav Bounces vol.1" had 0 dance songs on it for instance. But others might disagree.

Dan is in charge of this fundamentally - I'll raise my thoughts if need be (as per Robyn/Kleerup) from his lists but he has the final say which is cool with me!

Heaven isn't dance, although it is disco inspired. Speaking of Emeli Sande I would consider 'Lifted' as dance, but probably not eligible for the thread as both Emeli and Naughty Boy are usually R&B, not dance artists. I adored 'Lifted' at the time though, so it would be a bit sad if it wasn't included :(

Again to me "Rockabye" is an electro pop song with more urban leanings... "Heaven" though while by a pop artist is a dance song to me - fairly similar to "Love Me More" by Chase & Status featuring her, which would definitely be called a dance song.

Headaches :arrr:
