I did like 'T.H.E' at the time, but mostly for the novelty Mick Jagger bit at the end - the rest of its a bit of a non-event.

DDS was definitely predicted as a potential #1 at the time, and got unlucky by being behind two of the most irritatingly overrated tracks of all time, would totally prefer it at #1 over Crappy and Rather Bland.

97. MR SAXO BEAT- Alexandra Stan (47,765) #3

No 1 in 2 weeks in 2011

Discovered at a karaoke bar in 2009, Stan’s second single “Mr Saxobeat” spent 8 weeks atop of her native Romanian charts before becoming a major continental hit eventually making it big here in the summer of 2011. It remains the longest chart topper of the decade in Romania (apparently) and even narrowly missed the US top 20, though she’s failed to get another top 40 hit here since.

96. LEVELS- Avicii (48,342) #4

The song that saw Avicii hit the mainstream (under this pseudonym at any rate) as a solo act, the sample of Etta James’ “Something’s Got A Hold On Me” was certainly popular at the time with Flo Rida using the same sample on his chart topping “Good Feeling” and both hit the top 5 simultaneously. Rida’s version certainly borrowed some “influence" from this given that it was a hit in Sweden over the summer of 2011 but in the end it was Rida who got the bigger hit.

95. SUIT AND TIE- Justin Timberlake Featuring Jay Z (48,551)

No 1 for 2 weeks in 2013

Forget “Mirrors” this was the single that JT chose to announce his return as full time popstar in 2013. It was just 6k short of making No 1 that January and dethroning Will.i.am and Britney. Timberlake had taken 6 years off to concentrate on being a film star and producer so his “Comeback” was much heralded, all the expected elements are present, guest rapper, Timberland on production, and a naturally glam video directed by David Fincher who had directed him in “Social Network”.

ooh interesting to see Avicii here, I would've loved that to have been a #1 but those sales aren't very high so I can't really call it unlucky there.

still annoyed that Flo Rida got the bigger hit out of the sample though.

Mr. Saxobeat still sounds so fresh. It's a shame Romanian music doesn't have that organic dance sound like it used to.
Generic dance tracks bore me these days but I still love Mr Saxobeat

'Suit And Tie' is the best of the bunch so far! A really strong lead single that I was expecting to be a number 1. At least 'Mirrors' got there shortly after.

'Dibby Dibby Sound' is an abomination :puke: so I'm very glad that didn't top the chart!

Suit & Tie and Dibby Dibby Sound. Be nice if records that sounded like this could make a reappearance in the Top 40 soon...

HELL yeah to Mr Saxobeat, even if the UK radio edit is insultingly short - I remember the presence of both this and Inna's Sun Is Up made me think some epic Europop revival was on its way, but instead we got that deep/"big room" (what?!) house bollocks.

Levels really should have done it, I was pissed off when Flo nicked it as I thought he'd completely killed off Avicii's one chance at a major hit (ha!) so was pleased when it charted highly all the same.

Mr Saxobeat and Levels are both wonderful tracks that I have some great Uni first year memories of <3 The former admittedly hasn't aged well, but it certainly was great at the time and would've been a great number 1 that fit the club pop dance-saturated charts that summer.

94. STARRY EYED- Ellie Goulding (49,113) #4

Following the no 53 peak of debut single “Under The Sheets” and winning the BBC “Sound Of” in 2010, Goulding found the big time with this single which arrived at No 4 along with bagging herself Critics choice at the BRITS that year. An illustrious entry into the world of pop and one which could easily have hit the top.

For some reason I’d forgotten all about this! A shameless use of Janet Jackson’s “Again” forms the backbone of this release which shifted almost 50k in its first week. Hs first release “Replay” made the top slot you may recall and this didn’t disgrace as a second single but after that we seemed to lose interest in Iyaz.

92. EARTHQUAKE- DJ Fresh Vs Diplo Featuring Dominique Young Unique (49,137) #4

No 1 in 2 weeks in 2013

Something of a superstar DJ combo Fresh and Diplo teamed up for this track used in the film “Kick Ass 2”. It was a first release from a third album which is still to appear 3 years later, Dominique Young Unique subsequently went on to feature on Le Youth’s excellent “Dance With Me”.

Wow, I'm kinda surprised #1 sales were ever below 49K in 2010 or 2013. Can't say any of those three really missed out though, 'Solo' especially must have surprised everyone getting as high as #3! And wow at DJ Fresh appearing twice already, I suppose it might not be his last either.

Loving this thread already by the way, thanks for another great countdown thread!

Dibby Dibby Sound was awful, so glad that missed the top!

Levels is a bit of a shame, so was Starry Eyed.

I didn't like Suit & Tie much, Mirrors was much better.

91. ANTENNA- Fuse ODG (49,717) #7

What’s this a lowly No 7 hit a potential chart topper? Yes back in the heady days of the summer of 2013 and with the likes of Daft Punk, Robin Thicke, and Naughty Boy scoring six digit No 1 tallies this clocked in at a more modest 49k but in a couple of weeks of the year this would have handed the rapper a No 1 release. He’s gone closer since (top 3 in fact) but with better timing this could have been a fantastical debut.
