Posted September 5, 20168 yr This thought popped into my head after seeing that the charts top 10 has been mainly more male artists dominant along with dance tracks dominating over solo female artists who I've seen hasn't had as much of a advantage than guys do. Ie someone said that it's been ages since a female has topped the charts (there's been none this year so far) & as far as I could see only a small amount of female artists have actually reached the top 10. So can you mention any female artists who have managed to successfully achieve a top 10 hit since streaming got included in the Official Charts. Not including female groups like Little Mix/Fifth Harmony etc or features on dance tracks. Tove Lo would be included if were the case ^_^ For me i can think of some Adele Taylor Swift Ellie Goulding Zara Larrson Cheryl Ella Henderson Sia Why do you think female artists struggle to get top 10 hits more regularly than male artists when it comes to the streaming portion of things? September 5, 20168 yr i'm not as familiar with the UK charts, but wasn't Carly Rae Jepsen #1 there once or twice?
September 5, 20168 yr Rachel Platten Carly Rae Jepsen Louisa Johnson It's much harder for female artists to gain traction on streaming though as the main streaming demographic is teenage girls, who evidently prefer streaming male artists.
September 5, 20168 yr Miley Cyrus Ariana Grande Iggy Azalea Lily Allen Jessie J Nicki Minaj (unless you don't think features count, then axe iggy and nicki) Edited September 5, 20168 yr by travis
September 5, 20168 yr Author i'm not as familiar with the UK charts, but wasn't Carly Rae Jepsen #1 there once or twice? She achieved a top 10 with I Really Like You last year so yep she would count. It'll be interesting to see if GaGa & Emeli can get a top 10 with streaming, the former most likely but not necessarily straight away and if the hype translates but with the latter I'm not so sure it'll be a big chart presence. I guess we'll see!
September 5, 20168 yr With GaGa it depends on the song. No way will it initially go top ten (except on sales) but if it appeals outside of the fan base and to streaming appeal then it could easily climb there. If she does another Applause, she'll flop. (No shade intended, I do like Applause)
September 5, 20168 yr Doesn't seem to be any harder for female artists than male. It's just fewer singles are making the top 10 in the first place isn't it?
September 5, 20168 yr Doesn't seem to be any harder for female artists than male. It's just fewer singles are making the top 10 in the first place isn't it? I think it is harder, there are only 8 female artists as lead singers in the current Top 40 at the moment (compared to 15 male) Edited September 5, 20168 yr by PeteFromLeeds
September 5, 20168 yr It's WAY harder for females to have huge hits than males I think, particularly right at the top, where we've had probably less than (or around) 10 solo female top three hits in the last two years.
September 5, 20168 yr Author With the exception of tracks like 'Sax', 'Lush Life', 'I Really Like You' & all of Adele' s tracks to name a few because they sound like popular big hits in the first place. For other artists it isn't that easy to release songs and for them to go top 10 especially with streaming being more of an disadvantage unless they are hyped up to the max. Look at Dua Lipa for example with Hotter than Hell could have easily been a top 3/5 smash if someone like Bieber sang it but for some reason didn't quite get enough streams to make it a top 10 hit. Another thing is when did Rihanna last get a top 10 hit on her own? Pre streaming era with 'diamonds'. Even she can only get a top 10 hit with someone like Drake who is known to have a huge advantage with being a streaming favourite. Without a feature it's being proven that Rihanna wouldn't necessarily get a top 10 rn. Edited September 5, 20168 yr by Rob S

Look at Tove Lo for example with Talking Body, could have easily been a top 3/5 smash if sung by a guy but for some reason didn't quite get enough streams to make it a top 10 hit. Another thing is when did Rihanna last get a top 10 hit on her own? Pre streaming era with 'Stay'. Even she can only get a top 10 hit especially in the streaming era with someone like Drake who is known to guaranteed to dominate and hence have a huge advantage with being a hit. Without a feature it's being proven that Rihanna wouldn't necessarily get a top 10 rn. That featured Mikky Ekko, her last true solo top ten was Diamonds.
September 5, 20168 yr In Adele's case, her sales are so massive that they override the streaming benefit of other artists!
September 5, 20168 yr Fleur East and her Sax, Louisa Johnson Rihanna Zara Larsson Grace - You Don't Own Me
September 5, 20168 yr Author Tove Lo Top 10 before Streaming counted towards the chart doesn't count :P
September 5, 20168 yr She had a top 10 as featured artist on 'Heroes (We Could Be)' in the streaming era.
