Its just the same old recycled programmes now. As much as I love some of them, there's just a lack of inspiration and I'm not surprised that Christmas TV ratings are decreasing.

same shit different year :(

Witness for the Prosecution [Agatha Christie adaptation]

Very excited about this, though!

It is similar stuff as always but, given the BBC usually win the night and get the highest rating programme of Christmas Day (aside last year when the last ever Downton Abbey won it for ITV, for the first time in years), it's not really a surprise that they don't change it up. I know last year seemed like it had disappointing ratings with shows generally bringing in 5 or 6 million, but they all time-shifted very well, reaching highs of 9 and 10m.

Looking at the programmes listed though, you can pretty much predict there will be a chain of Doctor Who, Strictly, Call the Midwife, Eastenders, Mrs Brown's Boys and Michael McIntrye, as ever! You'll probably see a kids film (Monsters University perhaps, if that's rumoured) straight after the Queen's speech at 3pm followed by (depending on the timings) a short animation (perhaps this Ethel & Ernest?), given the success of Stick Man last year. It would be great if one of the Bake Off specials was shown on Christmas Day, but like I said, that chain from Doctor Who to Michael McIntrye has remained in tact for the last few years and I don't know what they'd replace if they were to do so.

Open All Hours and Agatha Christie will premiere on Boxing Day and I wouldn't be surprised to see two Eastenders episodes appear on New Year's Day again after the success of splitting the episodes last year, with David Walliams in the middle and the new Sherlock appearing afterwards at 9pm.

I don't really pay much attention to the ITV schedules but I reckon Grantchester will take Downton's slot and appear opposite Eastenders.

I appreciate that's a lot of waffle but I thought I best put it in writing to act as evidence before I eat my hat if I am wrong. :P

The Mirror has confirmed that the BBC will show Frozen on Christmas Day following the Queen's Speech. I believe this is its TV premiere (or at least a network premiere) so I reckon it will receive some really good ratings and set the BBC up for a healthy run throughout the night.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 will be shown on Boxing Day, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on December 30th and Monsters University on New Year's Day.

Mr Peabody & Sherman, Penguins of Madagascar, Planes, Muppets Most Wanted and Tinkerbell & The Pirate Fairy will also air over the Christmas period, whilst BBC 2 will air Saving Mr Banks, The Lady in The Van and Pride.

a short animation (perhaps this Ethel & Ernest?)

It's feature length and it'll be one of the highlights. I think Revolting Rhymes will be in the Stick Man / Gruffalo slot.

Shall be watching these:

Ethel & Ernest (saw it in the cinema, it's excellent)

Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes

Peter Pan Goes Wrong

Michael McIntyre's Christmas Show

To Walk Invisible

Maybe watch these:

Bake Off

Strictly (but the Christmas special is always poor. I guess they probably filmed it this week?)

Last Tango In Halifax

Top of the Pops - only if they feature older tracks, no wish to hear anything from 2016.

Jonathan Creek

outnumbered<3

I love that show

and I love birds of a feather

and the roald dahl sounds good (after last year I have high expectations!)

Overnight wise, Frozen will probably be the most watched thing on Christmas Day tbh  Such a massive coup for them!

Not out of the question! Last year, Brave followed on from Queen's Speech and received 5.5m so it would seem Frozen would have an easy time topping 6m in comparison, perhaps even in touching distance of 7m.

In regards to Christmas Day: The Doctor Who to Mrs Brown's Boys chain continues, but they managed to fit Bake Off in there too! I think the BBC will easily get better ratings than ITV and I can't see anything ITV have to offer winning the night. Maigret seems like it could be ITV's biggest rating on Christmas Day but I don't think it will do too much more than the 5.4m that watched the first episode back in March.

Of course, things are bound to change around before the official schedule comes in (particularly timings I would think) but it's a good enough idea of what to expect.

Excellent - looks like another Christmas Day with the TV off! That's the best way.

Yasssss Frozen! Had a feeling that would be premiering this year <3

Love the films line-up, only ones I haven't seen are Pride and Lady In The Van and want to watch both of them! Highly recommend all the others!

The Lion King is on ITV as the Xmas day afternoon movie??

I assume ITV know they'll be eaten alive by Frozen on BBC so have chosen something that is likely to at least get a couple million viewers.

Who actually watches the Queen's speech? I've never purposefully watched a whole Christmas speech from her.
Who actually watches the Queen's speech? I've never purposefully watched a whole Christmas speech from her.

It was a major part of our traditional family Christmas. We'd do the washing-up while TOTP was on. As soon as the programme finished, we'd turn the telly off and start opening our presents. Decades on, I've still never watched any of the Queen' speech and don't expect I ever will.
