rushing this commentary just to get this up~ a bright summer hip hop bop is always essential, like Sicko Mobb's Kool-Aid last year, this time it was D.R.A.M & Lil Yachty with "Broccoli" *.* "On Hold" was a great return for The xx, a nice advancement in their sound with Jamie's production more in the foreground. Can't Get Enough of Myself is a title i can sort of relate to, but regardless the song's chirpy charm is more than enough to get you sucked into the narcissism <3

Great to see Parquet Courts, The xx and Santigold here - “Can’t Get Enough of Myself” was a hit for me in 2015 so did not make the 2016 list, but both of the others were firm Top 10s; “Berlin Got Blurry” got to #7 in June and “On Hold” became The xx's first number 1 (though Jamie xx has had 4 on his own) when it went to #1 in December and also became my Christmas #1 for 2016.

25 White Lung "Kiss Me When I Bleed"

24 Great Good Fine Ok "Take It Or Leave It"

23 Teleman "Dusseldorf"

22 La Femme "Sphynx"

21 Danny L Harle feat. Carly Rae Jepsen "Super Natural"

3 of my song contest entries here! White Lung's raucous "Kiss Me When I Bleed" gave me a Nuggets hit, while Great Good Fine Ok's irresistible "Take It Or Leave It" and La Femme's v ~mystique~ "Sphynx" handed me Top 10 appearances (in an ideal world) in BJSC. Also in this batch are british indie group Teleman with their biggest track yet, and the blockbuster collab between HUGE DANNY and Carly Slay, i'm always forgetting just how good it is until i hear it again <3

Oh I like Can't Get Enough Of Myself! And On Hold and Supernatural but those are more predictable faves ~

Verite's cover of 'Somebody Else' is a Riserspike fave in case you haven't heard it (but I assume you have) :music:

16 PWR BTTM "Projection"

what's better than the vague embrace of a soft fuzzy man?~ possibly the final chorus/portion of this song, what a climax <3 couldn't forget ANOHNI's epic 4 Degrees, with those bombastic drums that kinda recall Hounds of Love? AlunaGeorge continued the dancehall pop trajectory of I'm In Control but perhaps outdoing themselves with a great hook and rap verses. Jessy Lanza put out a very attention-catching single, it means ah luv u xx an eerie vibe and kinda cutesy vocals reminiscent of pc music what's not to love. PWR BTTM delve into insecurity on amazing rock track "Projection", which tops this batch!

Fantastic start to the Top 20 with “4 Degrees”, “Mean What I Mean” and “It Means I Love You”.

Actually I am shocked with how low “It Means I Love You” is... I thought it was a cert. for your #1. (well that or Yeasayer anyway) !

14 Thee Oh Sees "The Axis"

13 Amber Coffman "All To Myself"

12 The Black Queen "Ice To Never"

11 Car Seat Headrest "Fill In The Blank"

trust Bastille to make a song about someone's death sound so joyous and upbeat <3 Thee Oh Sees' album closer "The Axis" is pretty much the opposite though, bile and hatred directed at an ex-lover (presumably) against an amazing psychedelic backdrop (not to mention the ending of the song, holy christ). Amber Coffman's gorgeous, smooth-as-silk "All To Myself" joins 4 Degrees as a Trifoski entry that never was (....yet x). Just before the top ten we have underrated UP entry "Ice To Never" by The Black Queen, emphatic vocals from Dillinger Escape Plan frontman Greg Puciato, dark synths and a huge singalong chorus. And one of my favourite rock songs of the year- Car Seat Headrest's "Fill In The Blank"!

Good Grief [10.0] Watching through your wiiiinnndddooowwww!

The Axis [9.0]

All To My Myself [8.0]

Ice To Never [9.5] Sounds great!

Fill In The Blank [9.5] Speaking of Car Seat Headrest, there is a version of their song Not What I Needed done in The Sims language.

MUNA's beautifully bittersweet "Winterbreak" was the best of what BJSC 2016 had to offer! (Trifoski aside but that goes without saying)

if you've got your THIN KING CAPS on you'll notice this is KKB's 4th appearance on this year's singles list, and their second straight finish inside my Top 10, slay much! and it comes courtesy of one of their wackier singles

Liking Winterbreak [8.5] and Lipslap [8.0] at the moment.

By the way, I just found out that Lemon Demon is none other than Neil Cicierega (creator of Potter Puppet Pals [Mysterious Ticking Noise is one of my favourite web videos of all time])

speaking of which...

Two Neil Cicierega songs inside the Top 10, 2016 really was a strange time to be alive. In all fairness though there weren't many songs as entertaining as this story of a man having his soul somehow trapped inside an arcade machine. Spending many a year adored by players, this is what love must have felt like. But soon left to rot by the innovation of handheld gaming, dammit! The tragedy seeping from that middle 8 is simply too much to take, move along!!

07 The Chainsmokers feat. Halsey "Closer"

Hey.

Surprise? This beloved tale of two mattress-stealing assholes became 2016's defining hit. Deservedly so, never has standard commercial dance pop cultivated such magic as this, wisely nabbing the melody and generally everything from "Love Me Like You Do" as a template. The moment Halsey bellows "we ain't ever gettin oldeeeeeer!" to make way for that glorious dance riff you realise this song is a true lightning in a bottle moment, never to be replicated or topped. Thank you Chainsmokers, and may Drew Taggart provide the vocals for every future Chainsmokers release.

I knew I recognized the name Neil Cicierega, can't believe Lemon Demon is the same guy that made Potter Puppet Pals!?

   <3 <3 Winterbreak <3 <3
