So it has the what may or may not be f**k yeah bit on Radio 1 too :o . I haven't listened recently.

There was an example in Robin Thicke ft Kendrick Lamar - Give It 2 You where the word d**k isn't edited out on the radio version.

I remember there was some confusion there because in the radio edit he says "kiss" instead of the d-word, but he also says "I've got some Thicke for you".

On the other had I remember it took ages for somebody to notice and remove the f-word in 12:51 by the Strokes. And radio stations were playing the version of 'Who Are You' by The Who with an F-word for about 30 years before anyone noticed. Then there's 'Happy Talk' and 'Hey Jude' which have never been edited.

Have been thinking of doing a thread of songs that escaped the censors. Outhere Brothers "If You Wanna Party" springs to mind. That has "shit" in it twice but got played on Radio 1 and TOTP no problem.

I didn't know about If You Wanna Party, although I do know it's a re-recorded version of a song originally called 'Pass The Toilet Paper'.

I remember Mark Goodier once playing the semi-clean version of 'Boom Boom Boom' on a chart show, though I think that was a one-off. I know another station got into trouble from Ofcom for playing the dirtiest version of that.

I'm absolutely flabbergasted over 'Be the One' being as high as #15 :o I thought it'd struggle to even break the iTunes top 40! Not complaining, though. SUCH a tune
Chumbawamba's Tubthumping which contains the line 'p***ing the night away' normally passes the censors.
"All that bullshit conversation" in George Michael's Fastlove usually gets played without problems, as does the video which happily features a shot of a woman's nipple.

Surprise hit for Rebecca? I would love that to happen!

She just needs a few live performances! Loose Women or something would be great

Exactly. She needs to perform it somewhere, I feel like this whole era might get a second wind. So sad that brilliant 'Bones' flopped terribly though.

Hope so too otherwise after about 6 single releases it will make the success of 'Who Do You Think Of' seem like a glitch!

Who Do You Think Of was slow at starting quite similar to Not In Love. I think we could see similar chart runs as their airplay is increasing & they've been doing a few radio tours. This is their 2nd single release since being signed to a major record label. The other songs were all independently released. Fingers crossed we can see a similar performance to WDYTO. :)

Dua Lipa #14! Keep climbing!!!

I was reading through some iTunes threads on Buzzjack from years gone by recently and it seems like the iTunes chart was a lot more active and competitive than it is now. Does anyone know which years roughly had the highest amount of sales for iTunes or when iTunes had the biggest market share?
Downloads peaked in 2012 I think, the first signs of decline appearing in the second half of 2013.
Where can I find old iTunes threads?

On the main page of the UK Chart forum you can select different page numbers. The ones that I was looking at were in the 100's & 200's from 2012 and 2013.

That's likely to be the case judging by how active the iTunes threads of that period were. It's a shame the charts are not like that anymore.

Outside of 'gift card' weeks, the biggest week for downloads was the one that ended on 31 March 2013 with 3,734,160 paid-for single sales (though this figure includes minimal physical sales) - the next 3 biggest weeks were all in June/July 2013 with just over 3.6 million paid-for single sales when huge singles from Daft Punk, Robin Thicke/Pharrell and Avicii were all selling huge amounts.

The 52-week rolling mean peaked in February 2013 so I'd say that was around the time that the market peaked.

It is now around 40-45% of the size it was back then, equivalent to where the market was in the autumn of 2007.
