March 9, 20179 yr This would mean that one could intentionally stream/buy the least popular song repeatedly to have an unprecedented negating of the album's tracks' popularity. haha - yes, chart manipulation like that would be possible, but you'd have to be totally insane to do it AND you'd simultaneously be boosting albums chart position and putting money into the pocket of an artist you presumably loathed at the same time?

I'm reminded of the 2009 Christmas campaign where Rage Against The Machine were on Sony and thus it was feeding into the very institution that was being spited  Still, I wouldn't doubt the resourcefulness of some of the more eager online fanbases around if there was a close battle for #1 against an artist like Sheeran.
March 9, 20179 yr I doubt Leona would have had multiple streaming entries given that her album didn't even manage multiple #1s from traditional single releases, with all the weight of TV promo behind them. She was one singer in a big market. The industry was very different back then, it's hard to compare like with like.
March 9, 20179 yr I actually think the terrible album market might help artists like Ed and Adele get higher sales than they would have 10 years ago with the same popularity. People have pretty much stopped buying albums these days, so on the rare occasion a huge album comes along it gets far more attention and people talk about it more, so I'd think more people probably jump on the bandwagon and buy it, partly because they rarely ever buy albums and are in the mood to discover something new. I think if the market was as it was in 2007 then 25 and ÷ would have had smaller first week sales. Might be completely wrong though! :P
March 9, 20179 yr It isn't like Leona was anywhere near as big as Ed is. She did what half of what Ed is going to open with in a better sales climate and in Q4. You are aware Spirit spent 8 weeks at #1, has sold over 3 million copies and is within the top 25 selling albums of all time in the UK?
March 9, 20179 yr These Ed songs are showing no sign of slowing down, he had 15 positions of yesterday's top 16 sellers (excluding #7) with 'Save Myself' also in the top 20. This Ed album takeover won't be just for this week...

March 9, 20179 yr If you dont like Ed Sheeran, its probably worth giving the Chart Show on friday a miss
March 9, 20179 yr The worst Top 20 ever! Why? Aside from the fact that album tracks should not be included until they are officially singles, Ed Sheeran is a heady mix of Simply Red, Phil Collins and Westlife all rolled into one beige (slightly ginger) MOR, mum-friendly artist - Listen to Galway Girl and Perfect and you'll see what I mean. Dire. RIP The singles chart. RIP The OCC
March 9, 20179 yr You are aware Spirit spent 8 weeks at #1, has sold over 3 million copies and is within the top 25 selling albums of all time in the UK? Boom! haha - also sold more than + and x? Amazing sales for Ed, good on him.
March 9, 20179 yr yes, but the demographic that was buying Spirit is not the streaming kind, so doubt she would be clogging Spotify, it's a bit like Take That, they also sold cazillons of albums in the 00s and now they cannot even make the Spotify top 200
March 9, 20179 yr Out of interest, is the Ed domination taking place in other countries too or just the UK?
March 9, 20179 yr yes, but the demographic that was buying Spirit is not the streaming kind, so doubt she would be clogging Spotify, it's a bit like Take That, they also sold cazillons of albums in the 00s and now they cannot even make the Spotify top 200 10 years ago the demographic was also different. So we can't know really what her streams would have been if streaming would've been a thing in 2007. In a way though I agree Leona is much more an album seller, I would compare her a bit like to Adele and Adele wasn't doing that badly on streaming either.
March 9, 20179 yr Julia Michaels was at #48 on Monday's update so I hope she can crack into the top 40 tomorrow if Little Mix miss out
March 9, 20179 yr Out of interest, is the Ed domination taking place in other countries too or just the UK? Not to the same level, no. He has a few songs top 10 in most countries' Spotify but not the entire top 16 in any other major market.
March 9, 20179 yr You are aware Spirit spent 8 weeks at #1, has sold over 3 million copies and is within the top 25 selling albums of all time in the UK? Yes I am, I'm also aware that that Ed's album is going to open with 300k more than Leona's did and will no doubt be at #1 a lot longer than 8 weeks total. Saying Leona would be doing what Ed is now is like saying Dido or Norah Jones would be too. Non of those are in Ed's league right now.
