Despacito was already huge in Spanish speaking countries before Bieber hopped on the track.

Spanish speaking countries, yeah....

Precisely, we aren't Spanish speaking  I'm aware it was colossal beyond belief in those countries but so are many other Spanish songs there. It's only getting the exposure here because of Bieber let's be real. It would not be a massive #1 with this lead if his name wasn't attached.

Actually no.

It was a huge hit in France, Italy, Germany and many other non-spanish speaking countries prior to the remix.

The remix basically exposed the song to the Anglosphere but the song sticked around thanks to people actually liking it.

Perhaps, but I think if it got this much exposure without Bieber (which it didn't but speaking theoretically), it would've been just as much of a hit. Bieber's name can only take things so far, this is just a popular song as evidenced by the original version in the iTunes top 20.

excuse me for interrupting, but with proper promotion I think Despacito could be top 10 hit without Biebz as we saw the rise of original version both on Spotify and iTunes just days before the remix has arrived.

Of course it would'nt be THAT big.

I'm not denying that Bieber is why it's selling so much, just that it's a big song worldwide regardless.

If Bieber featured on Enrique's 'Bailando' then I think that would've gone to number one here too, that song was huge in many countries but an English version with Sean Paul could only take it to #75.

Despacito was definitely big in Germany pre-Bieber. The CD single was everywhere in Hamburg and the original is on the latest Bravo Hits compilation there.

I agree that the UK are definitely way more closed minded than pretty much any other country in the world when it comes to appreciating music in different languages, however it's not like people who only follow the radio or the mainstream ever get a chance to hear them so it's partly a vicious cycle/self-fulfilling prophecy.

I'm sure if there were 4/5 foreign hits on the Radio 1 playlist every week then quite a few of them would end up as big smashes. Granted, probably not as big as they get in other countries, because the fact still exists that foreign songs just don't appeal to the masses here, but I do think Despacito could have been a sizeable top ten hit here without Bieber, with a concentrated push. Not that it ever would have been given a chance by radio I guess so it's a moot point!

So is it an official campaign now on Facebook elsewhere? I want to get behind this.

I'm not sure actually :o but it's certainly gaining traction and deservedly so!

If this got ahead of Despacito it'd be incredible - Luis Fonsi has been selling MASSIVE amounts recently so it'd be a superb achievement!
