Amatuer from Liverpool. Clearly we briefed the press, Southampton did not like this. Shame as "tapping up" happens all the time, clearly we pissed Southampton off.

Oh well, kinda gutting, but on the positive at least we almost beat Man City and Chelsea to the signing :D

Southampton are the definition of a "selling club", they are like a grown up academy for other Premier League teams  it's remarkable how they manage to keep themselves stable every year.
Where Southampton would be in the league if they didn't keep selling their players?

7th place at worst I would guess

Hector Bellerin is rumoured to have agreed personal terms with Barcelona.

Interesting to see if Soton manage to hold off on selling VvD this year for Liverpool to do a United/Herrera and come back next year.

Southampton are in a weird position as they always sell their best players, but can often be very stubborn about it. Vut their owner is a bit of a mess and Puel has been sacked, but he hasn't actually been sacked, as they can't find a replacement.

I suspect that's probably the end of our interest now. We need another centreback and cannot wait a year. A real shame as he's a great player, but we played a bad move and pissed Southampton off. I suspect he will now probably go to City/Chelsea.

Who hasn't raided Soton the past few years?!

Would be a shame to see him at City, and quite funny after they were conned £50m for Stones!

The thing is I think he would be mad to go to City or Chelsea. They buy centrebacks like they're going out of fashion and I'm not sure he would be first choice at either. I wonder if we might go back for him later in the summer. Doubtful, but for all intents and purposes it seems he really wanted to move to Liverpool. Shame, but guess that's football!

Stories coming out tonight that Conte has told Costa he does not want him anymore. Lukaku lined up as £87m replacement... world has gone mad, again!

Yeah I agree. He'd be scapegoated at City when they need more than just a CB to fix their defensive issues. I know JT is leaving but do Chelsea need a CB? They had a fairly solid back line this year.

You never know, could end up making a move in Winter. Though I guess it'll depend how far Soton take their complaint, your academy is under a transfer ban at the moment isn't it? You may need a new team in charge of transfers!

I'd be very surprised if Lukaku went anywhere other than Chelsea and if people still harp on about Pogba being overpriced then that fee is a joke. Belotti at Torino has a €100m release clause and he's high on our hit-list. These fees are getting outrageous.

Will be happy to see Costa out of the PL tbh, he's a dirty wee cheating thug. Still not convinced that Lukaku will work outside of Everton, they're set up to let him be selfish.

We never buy players in January anymore so I doubt it. I suspect we will move on or re-visit in August. Who knows what's happening internally. The Academy transfer ban is in place for British players. All clubs do it, we just got caught - same with Man City.

I like Lukaku a lot, he's a good goalscorer. He will do well at any club with the system built around him. Don't think he is as good as Costa though.

Lukaku definitely has more potential than Costa and will be better than him in the future if he's not already better although you could say he's a more productive goal scorer than Costa in terms of recent seasons.

Can see Costa going to AC Milan if he decides to move in the summer or most likely Atletico in January.

It's common knowledge that pretty much every team taps up players. We were just amateur enough to get caught doing so. The team in charge of transfers will have a lot of answering to do.

The line about us ending interest in Van Dijk is interesting though. I would have thought we would still try and pursue the transfer especially if we were willing to pay as much as £60m initially. I guess it could be a way to persuade Southampton to drop the complaint and to avoid punishment from the Premier League. A transfer ban would be disastrous! Such an important summer ahead in terms of transfers with us being back in the Champions League (qualifiers)

It's also a shame really as we're unlikely to get anyone nearly as good as Van Dijk. He was someone that would have come in and improved our starting XI right away. I fully expect him to leave still and join Chelsea or Man City instead

Morata and Lindelof in battle to be first announced by United apparently

And the Swede wins!!!!

United announced this evening that agreement has been made with Benefica for his transfer

Everton have agreed a £30m fee for Jordan Pickford from Sunderland. Quite a bit of money for him.

That makes Hart going to West Ham more likely then. Not sure it's wise - Adrian proved himself again in the last few games so keeper shouldn't really be out priority, and he'll be on big wages.

£30m is a huge fee!! Really good goalkeeper. I suspect if he performs well at Everton it won't be long before one of the Top 6 go for him. Same goes for Butland too.
