50. Numayania - Indigo - Frida Sundemo

 

 

Sugababes,Tove Lo,Imagine Dragons and Lukas Graham were all in the line-up for the 50th final but in the end,it was a battle between Swedish singer Frida Sundemo and gooddelta's beloved Aussie. Frida won a tie-break by 25 votes to 23 with Hunters And The Wolves by Delta Goodrem (FSR Rontvia) settling for 2nd place . I Will Show You by Ailee was 3rd for Daehun.

 

Indigo is a pleasant pop song with lots of twiddly synth bits but nothing to make it really stand out.

I wasn't a massive fan of either of the top 2 of BJSC 50 but it would have been a better narrative if Delta Goodrem had finally won, following 3 earlier underperformances (including one for FSR Rontvia in the very first contest), so that was another tiebreak going the wrong way </3 This is still the most recent occasion where the top 2 have been tied, bound to happen again one of these days though.

Snif. Poor brave Delta, but Numayania was the king of tiebreaks.

 

Indigo was decent enough but the glorious Snow which was the follow-up single I loved so much more - that would have made a sublime winner in place of this.

 

A tied winner is less likely now of course but I'd love to see another soon, as long as I'm not on the losing end of it again :lol:

I think Cerahtonia is by a distance my least favorite BJSC winner, mostly due to the fact that I struggle to remember how it goes even moments after I finish playing it.

That trio of Aeroche winners were fab *.* although their best winner for me is 'Fate' from BJSC 90 that narrowly beat yours truly :kink: :wub:

44-50 since i last commented isn't exactly vintage :lol: Indigo is the only on I really like out of them, Trust and Cerhtonia I couldn't really remember how they go before listening tothem just then. Run Boy Run is even more overrated than The Girl On The Robot, for me it's a bit try hard epic indie song with all the right ingredients that just don't hit for me like it does virtually everyone else. Indigo is nothing revolutionary and I would have preferred the wonderful Hunters and The Wolves to have won but it's a bop all the same.

 

(Closer and Bomb deffo should have won their respective contests out of those top 3s)

Cerahtonia I do love, even though September is one of my fave discoveries, it's still a much better winner than it's often given credit for. Indigo's a bit inessential though

51. Aeroche - Northern Lights - Kate Boy

 

 

We have reached 2013 and with automatic qualification,Numayania went with Petula Clark who released her first single way back in 1949. She was 80 years old at the time the final was held and must surely be the oldest person to take part in the contest. It was another win for Aeroche with Kate Boy finishing 13 points ahead of Autre Ne Veut's Counting (N DNTN) and Two Men In Love by The Irrepressibles (Isconia) who had to be separated by a tie-break.

 

This is another good winner from Aeroche,I like the vocals and the electronic bits in the last minute of the song. Kate Boy are a Swedish/Australian duo and this was their debut single.

 

8.3 out of 10.

 

'Northern Lights' was another quality winner from Aeroche :heart: the Aeroche winner has been just a once annual event since that, still not yet happened this year though :o (not in a main contest anyway). My top pick in this contest was the wondrous 'Down On Life' by Elliphant :wub:

 

Interestingly enough that auto-qualifier for Numayania turned out to be their penultimate appearance ever in a BJSC final - up to that point they'd only DNQed once ever and finished in the top 10 more often than not (including having 4 top 5 hits in a row on two separate occasions), but all went downhill after Petula Clark, they entered 12 more times and 11 of those DNQed. They're long gone now as Tom Kay hasn't even logged in since their final contest in mid 2015.

I don't really remember Northern Lights at all, was a bit of an average winner for me. My pick would've definitely been Counting for N DNTN, remains one of my favourite BJSC discoveries :wub:

52. Batidas - Uncover - Zara Larsson

 

 

Twenty One Pilots,Vanessa(Joe Le Taxi)Paradis and Clean Bandit all took part but only the third of these made the final. Zara Larsson won by 6 points with Little Daylight's Overdose 2nd for Fljotavik and Tone Damli's Smash in 3rd place for The Federal Republic of Ashton.

 

So from the 80 year old Petula Clark in the last contest,we go to the 15 year old Zara Larsson. If she's not the youngest finalist,she must be the youngest winner. Uncover is an anthemic piano and strings ballad. It's not really my thing but she sings it well. It was from her first EP and got to no.1 in Sweden and Norway.

 

7.8 out of 10.

 

 

I actually remember stumbling across 'Uncover' and thinking it sounded like the sort of thing that would do well in BJSC before Batidas sent it, I was nearly tempted to send it myself but I was never THAT huge a fan of it. It's a nice enough song though. Never expected Zara to go on to have such great success in the UK charts!

 

Best song in this contest - although it was only my 8 at the time - was Robert DeLong's 'Global Concepts' :music:

'Uncover' was good for what it was, I recall everyone comparing it to Emeli Sandé's 'Read All About It' but the general consensus being that it was a lot better (most things are). Zara would go on to much greater things though of course.

 

'Northern Lights' was another good Aeroche winner, though these days I wouldn't put it amongst the all-time Aeroche greats. I'd say the Aeroche trio were all better ('Sulk' and 'Need U' particularly, and as those are the first two winners since I last posted in this thread I'll briefly say both of those are great).

 

'Indigo' was a bit of an underwhelming winner but I actually preferred it to the Delta Goodrem song unlike the vocal minority who were quite annoyed at Delta being denied her god-given right to win BJSC (she'd eventually win BJSC Reloaded so all was okay).

 

Not overly keen on 'Cerahtonia' but it was the best of that top three for me (although I can only barely recall it now and I don't recall 'September' or 'Closer' at all so for all I know one of those may have aged better if I ever re-listen).

 

I really should update my rank now too but I'll leave that until later.

53. #00274E - Look Up - Carli

 

 

There was not yet any Buzzjack love for Lorde as Royals finished 29th out of 30 in the final. This was 6 months before it got to no.1. You much preferred Carli who finished 30 points ahead of Dance Our Tears Away by John De Sohn and Kristin Amparo (Sandeborg). Out Of Yourself by Truls was 3rd for Persephonia.

 

There's a 90s sound to this at the start with the vocals and the piano. It then goes all dubstep. A definite 'banger'. I like it. Carli's real name is Carl Lof. After searching the internet,I can find no other information about him.

 

8.7 out of 10.

 

Really don't like 'Look Up' at all, the vocals are so offputting. Carli would redeem himself later with Dobago's entry 'The Legend' which I gave top points to though - and I actually didn't realise this until well after the fact, but Carli is also a member of Savage Skulls who I myself had sent in the past! 'Dance Our Tears Away' in 2nd was much better, one of Sandebörg's few really great entries, and a really fab video as well :wub: this was the first contest where I actually managed a big hit as well, yasss.

 

There aren't many super memorable songs from this contest, my 12 was Tailor's 'Wolf' which I've not revisited in ages, I remember my 10 and 8 pointers much better (the banger 'Platinum Chains' by Michael Woods which came 4th, miiiiiiiles superior to the Michael Woods song that would go on to win a year and a half later, and the gorgeous 'Luminous' by Alice And The Glass Lake (RIP)).

 

EDIT: although I should have looked further down my votes/actually read that post properly because the actual best song in this contest is OF COURSE 'Royals' :wub: though I was silly enough to give it only 1 point at the time.

I still love Look Up, like a lost 90s diva house classic. I gave 7 to Royals, which is one of the highest scores it got - it eventually finished 2013 at #3 in my end of year chart :lol: So I did love it straight away, hence the high points (and I was pretty disgusted at its low finish here) but it still took a while for me to completely adore it, even when it hit the charts.

 

Platinum Chains *.* I found that in Dan's personal chart and loved it :lol: And Hitstastic edited it down for me to make it more BuzzJack friendly.

I will never understand why my initial reaction to 'Royals' was so... not immediate. It was literally a case of me just liking it in the contest (I did give it a point after all!) but not seeing anything special in it, but then the very first time I heard it on the radio a few months later I instantly fell massively in love with it, and it debuted straight away at #1 on my personal chart (back when I had one) and spent a good 3 months there. This was still before it became a UK hit as well!!

Another quality Aeroche winner in the form of Kate Boy! They were on a bit of a roll during this time as all four of their winners so far are in my top 20. I'm a big fan of Krewella's 'Alive' from the top 5 of this contest too <3 justice for the lush 'Adorn' by Miguel that DNQed that edition (well... I say justice for that but really it did get justice in the end 'cause it went on to win Rejects *.* BJSC masses seeing sense in the end).

 

That Zara song is pretty bland, it is far too similar to 'Read All About It' for my liking which I was never much of a fan of in the first place. Her voice also sounds a bit jarring (it took me quite a bit of time to come around to 'Symphony' for the same reason, otherwise I don't usually have a problem with her vox). Thank goodness she went on to much better and bigger things. Really pleased that she blew up since then, when she now has the likes of 'Never Forget You', 'Lush Life' and 'Girls Like' amongst her repertoire <3 I see this was the contest that housed one of my favourite Persephonia entries 'Pacifica (Kito & Reija Lee Remix)' by Spor!! :wub: that is such a beauty, why oh why did you guys not let it smash :'( other highlights that I recognise are 'Global Concepts' (I regret not voting for 'Don't Wait Up', the Robert DeLong entry that was then sent when I was actually part of the contest) and 'A+E', so much love for that Clean Bandit era *.*

 

Ooh I was actually digging that Carli song high pitched vox and all (#bradearenotthesameperson) but then some TUMBLEDRYER production was injected for the drop :mellow: so that has docked points off it in my affections as I hate that kind of breakdown (see also David Guetta/Rihanna - 'Right Now' drop *shudders*). Truls and NONONO are massive highlights of that top 5 *.* and obviously 'Royals' is fab, whoops BJSC masses sleeping on Lorde prior to her commercial breakthrough. Finally, hell no at Tich and Miss Li being unleashed in this final, what a ghastly pair :/ (I haven't actually heard the latter song but her voice was unbearable in later entry 'Aqualung').
