10. Love Machine // 7.73

Into the Top 10 we go, and the first to fall is Love Machine!

It's safe to say that Girls Aloud weren't pleased when Polydor selected Love Machine for single release - Cheryl "hated it" and Nadine feared it would be "career suicide". The girls were so strongly against it that they had a meeting with the label, and suggested that Deadlines & Diets should be released instead. Evidently the label won out, and the release of Love Machine went ahead in September 2004. I can understand why the girls had their reservations - it's packed with barmy and nonsensical lyrics, and was so unlike anything else in the charts at that time - making it a rather out-there choice.

They needn't have worried! Love Machine entered the UK singles chart at #2 and stayed there for a fortnight (behind the massive dance hit Call on Me by Eric Prydz) - so Polydor clearly made the right decision! It went on to be regarded as one of the girl group's signature hits, and as of 2014 its total sales stood at 210,000 - one of eight Girls Aloud singles to be certified. Despite the success, the song was seemingly never to Cheryl's tastes - on more than one occasion she expressed that she wouldn't want to sing Love Machine once she turned 30. As it turned out she got her wish - Girls Aloud split in March 2013 following their final tour, and Cheryl was 29 at the time.

In the years since the demise of Girls Aloud, Love Machine seems to be one of their best remembered singles. On Spotify it is currently their most popular song (but their second most streamed overall, behind Sound of the Underground), and by my reckoning it'll become their most streamed song by November 2017!

Interesting fact: Love Machine's B Side Androgynous Girls had initially been considered to be released as the lead single from 'What Will the Neighbours Say?'!

Fully expecting 'Call The Shots' to come top 3 though, so 1 out of 2 ain't bad! :D

'Untouchable' and 'The Boring Kind' above 'Love Machine'... :drama:

It's not one of my personal favourites from them, but basic?!

Oh and Jonjo...

9. The Show // 8.20

Why are their YouTube screenshots so crap? :')

A big jump in average now and we reach The Show, the third WWTNS? single out in a row and the highest of the four. The Show was released as the lead single from the girls' second album, and gave them their third #2 in five releases. It got stuck behind Usher's Burn, also new that week, and was one of five new entries in that week's top 10 alone! The video is my personal favourite of theirs. It sees the girls open up their own salon, Curls Allowed, and features them all in their own roles - Nicola as Chelsea Tanner, Nadine as Frenchie, Sarah as Supa Styler, Cheryl as Maxi Wax, and Kimberley as The Boss, which I loved when I was 7 years old and stanned Kimberley but the role seems less apt now x

Some of these thumbnails! :')

'Love Machine' will always hold a special place in my heart for being the song that me and my friends were going to sing on 'Stars In Their Eyes: Kids' as Girls Aloud like 10 years ago  sadly this never quite happened but when it was going to be a thing I practiced singing this song soooo much, so the words will forever be ingrained. I love the crazy lyrics and the idiosyncratic production. I'm so glad that the GBP warmed to its charm and it wasn't the 'career suicide' that the girls were envisioning.

'The Show' has been one of my biggest GA growers over the years! I have always been a fan of the video though like you Joseph, so much fun!

My preferred top 5 out of those remaining:

01. Sexy! No No No...

02. Biology

03. Something Kinda Ooooh

04. Untouchable

05. Call The Shots

I can't believe believe TLK is still in! Fantastic commentaries here Jay/Adam/Joseph, it's been fab reading!

 Glad that you're enjoying the results!

TLK has definitely outstayed its welcome for me as well.

It's my favourite of theirs but I can see why it's outstayed itself for some people! :D

Unfortunately you didn't! :(

I'm disgusted with myself.
