July 27, 20177 yr 03. Call The Shots // 9.05 QPWUyAZZfK0 Averages get very high now as we lose the final single from Tangled Up. Call the Shots was the album's second single, and debuted at #9 the week the album came out. It then rose six places to a peak of #3 after the release of the CD single. It spent seven weeks in the top 10, and 15 weeks in the top 40, a pretty big deal back then! The girls made their X Factor debut to promote this song, performing it on one of the results shows, and other performances occurred on the likes of This Morning, The Paul O'Grady Show, and of course, The Girls Aloud Party. Call the Shots is possibly THE most critically acclaimed GA single, cited by some as the best pop song of all time (notably from Popjustice's Peter Robinson when it won the Twenty Quid Music Prize).
July 28, 20177 yr The Tangled Up singles really were fantastic weren't they?!! Love Call The Shots - the sentiment is quite relatable really. The video remains one of their best and a girl band classic I'd say, how many other videos have those iconic Samsung swivel phones and Sarah's tragic haircut? :kink:
July 28, 20177 yr I'm so glad 'Call The Shots' hasn't won this. I agree with what Jonjo said earlier, it's grossly overrated. I find it so incredibly flat.
July 28, 20177 yr I don't get why 'Call The Shots' is so maligned on here, it's so sublime. (:kink:) Seriously, I think Call the Shots is a stunning pop track! Well deserving of its status as a huge fan favourite.
July 28, 20177 yr Call the Shots is a gem! It's one of my favourite songs of all-time and the middle 8 is a true MOMENT. For a slower song, the instrumental is really powerful sounding, I find it quite unique. It's a blissful listen. Can't quite believe it's nearly 10 years old!
July 28, 20177 yr Urgh at Sound being ahead of Call The Shots. I love it but...I find Sound a bit overrated in comparison to their other singles.
July 28, 20177 yr Catching up on the top 5 so far No Good Advice is sublime I adore it one of the best girl group releases for me just never ages although same can't be said about it's video  Sexy No No No is such a great anthem I am glad that was the lead single from Tangled Up as it set that era up so well. Call The Shots again is amazing the middle 8 is beautiful and one of the best lyrical songs Girls Aloud have made.
July 29, 20177 yr 'Sexy! No No No...' is incredibleeee  My 11 as not just their best song but also their best video! I cannot believe it is 10 years old now :o I remember crystal clear receiving a Girls Aloud newsletter email saying that a song called 'Sexy! No No No...' from them was being released soon, I thought what an odd title! But I liked the song straight away (me and my best friend used to sing it during primary school break times ) and it has only ever got better for me, as 'Biology' was my favourite GA song for YEARS until this eventually pipped it. That intro gives me goosebumps every time and then the rest of the song is just electrifying. I didn't expect it to win (especially not with the Iz -1!!) so that is a fabulous position for it. 'Call The Shots' is of course pop perfection also. The 'Tangled Up' era was just class wasn't it! *.* It was wonderful to witness that having such a healthy chart run at the time for them. 'Biology' to win!!
July 30, 20177 yr Author 02. Biology // 9.14 bBPtP4t2J1k It was close but the critically acclaimed 'Biology' has to settle for silver. Released back in 2005, 'Biology' is not your average pop song, with a structure that nobody else but the dream team of Girls Aloud and Xenomania could do. Not that they ever needed to prove the critics wrong 3 years on from their reality TV beginnings, but 'Biology' cemented Girls Aloud as pop perfectionists. Whilst it may have only peaked at #4 on the official singles chart, it was the first Girls Aloud song to top the then up and coming iTunes chart. The lyric 'without wicked games' is a reference to the fact they almost released a cover of Chris Isaak's 'Wicked Game' instead. Luckily they went for 'Biology' instead, becoming one of their signature tunes and an instant classic.
July 30, 20177 yr Biology is nothing short of incredible! One of the best pop songs ever, so unique. It still sounds fresh & exciting to listen to almost 12 years on.
July 30, 20177 yr 01. Sound of the Underground // 9.30 V9Wv4SCBiTE BuzzJack's favourite Girls Aloud single is Sound of the Underground - the song which started it all! Following the formation of boy band One True Voice & girl group Girls Aloud on the reality TV show Popstars: The Rivals, it was initially seen as a foregone conclusion the boys would go on to super-stardom, while the girls would fall by the wayside. Well, we all know what actually happened! *.* The public certainly agreed with Girls Aloud's "Buy Girls, Bye Boys" slogan; Sound of the Underground went straight in at #1. Not only was it the first debut single to be a Christmas #1 single, but it also made Girls Aloud the first UK girl group to enter at #1 with a debut single. It eventually became platinum certified and remains the girls' best selling single. Hard to believe it was released almost 15 years ago! Imo Sound of the Underground is by far the best "winners single" to come out of a reality show and one of the strongest pop debuts ever... and a very worthy winner here!
July 30, 20177 yr Whilst it's not my absolute favourite, SOTU is still a stormer of a pop song and such a huge risk for a talent show winning single! One of the best pop debuts of the 21st century for sure.
July 30, 20177 yr I've said my piece on CTS already and I still don't get why beyond the production maybe (which is nice enough), it's raved about as much as it is, as it's so flat and doesn't really go anywhere beyond the introduction.. I still think 'Sound of the Underground' and 'Biology' are two of the riskiest pop releases by a manufactured pop group, ever! So expertly crafted. I would LOVE for more singles as daring as those in the charts these days. Especially boybands. I hate how plain their songs are and they get easy hits with them a lot of the time. Whereas for girl groups, it's harder for them to get that sort of hit, so I feel like they more often than not try harder with their songs and sometimes it really pays off! Thanks for this countdown! It was great revisiting so many classics doing this. EDIT: Also, can someone edit Jay's "Bye Girls, Bye Boys" part of the commentary to "Buy Girls, Bye Boys" please :kink:
July 31, 20177 yr ^ Blame me for writing this when feeling tired! :snif: :') Will edit~ While we're on the subject of attention to detail: "...Baby One More Time", "Oops!...I Did It Again" and "I'm A Slave 4 U" instead of "Baby One More Time", "Oops...! I Did It Again" & "Slave 4 U" in your Britney polls pls & thank yoooou xoxoxox #clapback #JonjoIsAFakeBritneyFan #SackHim :kink: I've said my piece on CTS already and I still don't get why beyond the production maybe (which is nice enough), it's raved about as much as it is, as it's so flat and doesn't really go anywhere beyond the introduction.. It went THERE! Thanks for this countdown! It was great revisiting so many classics doing this.  It's been enjoyable to do! This activity has got me listening to their stuff a lot more again. Most of it stands up so well for me after all these years.
July 31, 20177 yr I really thought 'Biology' or 'Call The Shots' would win this before results started so colour me slightly surprised! I would have preferred one of those to win (as I gave them 10, while SOTU received a 9) but 'Sound of the Underground' is still a great winner nevertheless. It was a solid foundation for the girls! A winner's single that was exciting, innovative and so edgy for a girlgroup. I adore the bridge, chorus and the surf guitar in the production  'Biology' is incredible. As I mentioned when 'Sexy! No No No...' dropped out, it was my favourite Girls Aloud song for years before it finally got overtaken. It felt like such a breath of fresh air at the time with its pretty unorthodox structure! It feels like 3 songs in one, but all the different components are strong and come together just right so it totally works. I like the video as well. Thanks mods for doing this, I had fun following along and reading the fab commentaries  going to revisit all the singles now x
July 31, 20177 yr Call The Shots      Pop perfection, the best song ever, etc, etc...
August 1, 20177 yr Urgh at Sound being ahead of Call The Shots. I love it but...I find Sound a bit overrated in comparison to their other singles. THIS. HOW DARE SOTU WIN THIS. I AM NOT OKAY WITH IT.
August 5, 20177 yr Fantastic winner! I like Biology more but I can't begrudge SOTU winning it really is great!
