July 13, 20178 yr I'd say Adele and Ed Sheeran have peaked with their current albums. They'll both still be successful of course but I think both of their next albums will sell a bit less, and they'll then have a steady decline in sales but still be deemed relevant in 10 years. As for Drake, I really can't see him still being relevant in 10 years. This thread also brings to mind Lady Gaga - in her Fame Monster era, I (along with most others) genuinely thought she was going to be the next Madonna and have years and years of success ahead of her. Just goes to show how fickle the pop industry really is!
July 13, 20178 yr Drake will go the way of Kanye/Jay-Z in 10 years I reckon. Still a huge name but not getting big singles chart hits.
July 13, 20178 yr I can't really see any of Little Mix with big solo careers TBH. No one truly stands out as a Geri, Beyoncé or Cheryl to me at this stage. The same could've been said for One Direction though to be fair, and now all of them have had at least 1 song go Top 10. The one with the most promising solo career to me right now is Perrie, arguably the "Harry of the group", and could probably become the next Rita Ora.

Little Mix are not big in the same way One Direction were (still are). They'll be far more JLS when it comes to going solo.

The next Rita Ora, that's hardly a great aspiration  personally I think Jesy would do the best, she'll be the Liam to Perrie's Harry.
July 13, 20178 yr yes, it's not easy to have a long lasting career on the spotlight, there's more acts doing a Mika/Duffy than an Ed Sheeran. I also thought Gaga was gonna be the next Madonna and have #1s for years, but I think the expectations were justified cos she did Pokerface, Paparazzi, Just Dance... left for a couple months and came back with Bad Romance, Telephone... It's crazy to see how popular you can be one era, and then lose it completely out of the blue, like Katy Perry now... was just at the airport checking music magazines and was surprised at the bad reviews for Witness, with many given the album a 0/10. Think Adele will take a long break but not Sheeran, he's already talking about album #4 :/ Think he's peaked in terms of popularity and I see there's already some backlash against Ed... over-exposure is never good (i.e. Emeli Sande)... Cannot see anyone from L Mix getting a successful solo career either...
July 13, 20178 yr On another note - how are Coldplay still able to infect the singles chart but none of their peers from the 00s are able to do it?
July 13, 20178 yr I can't really see any of Little Mix with big solo careers TBH. No one truly stands out as a Geri, Beyoncé or Cheryl to me at this stage. How did Cheryl particularly "stand out" though? Aside from managing to garner a media profile. This thread also brings to mind Lady Gaga - in her Fame Monster era, I (along with most others) genuinely thought she was going to be the next Madonna and have years and years of success ahead of her. Just goes to show how fickle the pop industry really is! I really think she could have had that potential had she kept at 'Bad Romance' sort of level. She slowly but surely spectacularly buggered it up for herself though.
July 13, 20178 yr How did Cheryl particularly "stand out" though? Aside from managing to garner a media profile. By getting a criminal record. (:kink:)
July 13, 20178 yr For many of the artists mentioned they have at this point of their careers done enough to be remembered in 10 years. Adele and Ed Sheeran for example have had such huge success that they wont be forgotten as they are huge global household names. Little Mix, i am a huge fan and i hate saying this. If they split in the next 2 years i don't believe they will be remembered more than many girlbands. The Spice Girls for example were such a worldwide success they wont be forgotten. The Spice Girls were also wonderful at keeping themselves in the press. Little Mix are doing brilliantly but for them to be remembered i strongly believe they need to stay together and not go down the route of most girlbands/boybands and split and aim for solo careers. If Little Mix stay together and get a few more big era's to their name they will be remembered more greatly.
July 13, 20178 yr How did Cheryl particularly "stand out" though? Aside from managing to garner a media profile. That's exactly how she stood out IMO! She was quite easily the biggest name in Girls Aloud by the time they went on hiatus, because of her media profile, and that was a massive help when it came to her solo career.
July 13, 20178 yr On another note - how are Coldplay still able to infect the singles chart but none of their peers from the 00s are able to do it? By 1) being very rich and having the money to keep playing in the big rings and 2) continuing to chase current trends. Coldplay started out as an alternative band but have swung right into pop rock. Back in the 2000s you couldn'tve imagined them collaborating with Beyonce, Rihanna, or a dance duo like the Chainsmokers. Their next release will feature Big Sean on one track, talk about a style change. Maroon 5 would be a band contemporary to them that have also kept in the spotlight by chasing current 'in' sounds. Also in the pop game any band with a charismatic lead singer that keeps their looks as they get older and continues to dress in style will have a longer shelf life.
July 13, 20178 yr On another note - how are Coldplay still able to infect the singles chart but none of their peers from the 00s are able to do it? Simply because they've kept evolving, whilst keeping a clear correlation between their work that identifies it as being a Coldplay record. Their songs have always kept that anthemic, uplifting quality, whether that be on 'Yellow' or on 'Adventure of a Lifetime'. Writing great songs helps too.
July 13, 20178 yr That's exactly how she stood out IMO! She was quite easily the biggest name in Girls Aloud by the time they went on hiatus, because of her media profile, and that was a massive help when it came to her solo career. Exactly this. She was a media dream right from when that 'incident' happened. Maybe to her later detriment and events that followed in the next 10 years, but big profile creates big demand.
July 13, 20178 yr can't see Chainsmokers lasting more than a couple years, not easy for dance acts to stick around... even Calvin, not sure if he can stick around so long... You are aware Calvin has been going for over a decade already and is still a huge name right? He's continued to do well by evolving his sound over time, if he carries on like that I don't see any reason he'll fall out of favour any time soon. The Chainsmokers are very much 'of the time' though, it's definitely harder to see them managing to maintain relevance in the next few years, but I wouldn't write them off completely.
July 13, 20178 yr yes I know Calvin's going on for 10 yrs, that's why I cannot see him going on for 10 more
July 13, 20178 yr yes I know Calvin's going on for 10 yrs, that's why I cannot see him going on for 10 more He will - just not to the chart heights he is today. Look at Tiesto, I can't remember the last time he had a hit, but he still makes crazy money. Bieber and Drake have been around for 8 years. The key is to staying with the trends and keeping a good media profile. As for Little Mix all having successful solo careers.. I can't see it. Personally I can only see Perrie.
