It's an interesting discussion, actually, for me as politics and nationalism is part of my research as an academic and a theatre maker. There are plenty of research on the social-economic implications of the Cool/Great Britannia movement and how it entranched nationalism and white supremacy in the UK, as it was a neo-empiralistic project of propaganda of national identity, even if that wasnt its intention publicly at the time...

The Spice Girls were part of it, although one might suggest that their intentions were positive and also created a shit load of positive change in the acceptance of girls, girl power and the LGBTQ+ community along the way.

Not saying that Geri did it on purpose, but certainly it tapped into a narrative of national identity merged with branding itself as positive/influencially progressive. Ah well... I cnat wait to start my PhD so I can properly explore these topics eheh

Sorry, super off topic of course... but that gringe/nationalistic approach to cultural reproduction by Geri was part of the reason why I guess I never warmed up to her solo career in the first place..

I agree. And that’s why I guess none of the girls really shares their political views that much. I mean, compared to US American artists. I guess they really shitted their knickers when they were called Tories (minus Geri who turned into one of them).

By the way, the girls medley was amazing. I loved how touching was Goodbye and the tears in their eyes. Geri used the shock-value and she won the press, but the girls were at the top of their games (pity it’a when they were going separate ways).

Yeah in the UK if you are a celebrity and show any criticism to the Gov, you get a bad rep, so many dont do it (although many do). They were never able to shake up the 'Tory' lable - it was going all over social media during the return in 2019 too, specially after Geri supported Theresa May and Brexit during the reunion announcement press tour...

Totally agree about that performance. The group were on top of their game and the performance is still one of their best ones. It was SUCH a shame they went their separate ways then. Truly, they could have released an album that same Spring and found quite a lot of success then.

Maybe interesting, maybe not x

This is a reminder that today is the last day to nominate the dolls for the #ToyHallOfFame. I won't know anything until mid September but the board will be reviewing everything from now until then so you can still post and tag @museumofplayroc until then to help their chances.

Aside from that, behold these photos I have just been given today from a former Galoob employee. She also sent me never before seen photos of the Girls holding their prototypes but she requested I not share them until I have been granted permission from the @spicegirls themselves. So, feel free to tag @officialmelb @melaniecmusic @emmaleebunton @victoriabeckham @therealgerihalliwell in the comments. Who knows, maybe they will give me permission to do so.

Thanks to everyone who shared my post in trying to help get the dolls inducted into the Toy Hall Of Fame. Even if it fails I tried my very best and will alway appreciate everyone's encouragement and support. #spicegirlsdolls #thespicegirlsdolls #spiceupthetoyhalloffame #iamaspicegirl #spiceinplastic

Would be interesting to see those unreleased photos of the girls holding the dolls, but I won't hold my breath that any of them will acknowledge it...

On the subject of dolls, I wanted them so much in late 1997, but sadly gender norms got in the way of that desire <_<

There is certainly a difference between US and UK celebrities indeed. In the US it's almost not done to not criticise to government (especially during the Trump era), whereas in the UK it's a lot more uncommon. I know Lily Allen has always been outspoken, and there and more, but it is strange as the Tory government is just as bad as Trump's.

Yeah, that was a random, though cute release. I remember seeing it in shops and trying to get it but my mom wouldnt let me -_-
Melanie C has wished Geri a happy birthday whilst again hinting that a tour is def going to happen!!

Did some of you notice that we're now just 'Spice Girls' forum rather than 'Spice Girls and Solo'? All the forums that had 'and Solo' in their name don't have it anymore. Anyway if you press Ctrl+F5, the forum banner will update to reflect this change!

This is of course still the forum to talk about their solo projects, in case there's any confusion!

WHAT!?!? I thought we agreed it would become the Melanie C forum Jay!?!?!?

"Melanie C & Friends" was the second option but ultimately it wasn't to be  ( :heehee: )

Take That/Robbie... in some respects his career went beyond Take That, so that's really why he's given special mention. Originally BuzzJack had separate Take That and Robbie forums, but a few years ago they were merged.

I mean that is totally true... until their comeback when they totally matched Robbie's solo accomplishments (although more so without him tbh).

Melanie C & Friends it should have been I'm disgusted it isn't quite frankly!

Excuse me but Flawless & The Girls should be the forum's name :w00t:

I love Melanie C, she’s my fave with Mel B. But calling her Flawless, nah. Let’s stick to Melanie C & Friends. ❤️
