I don't know how I've missed it, as I've already read it, but "The Spice Girls at 25: Here's the story from A-Z" claims that the 1998 Spiceworld Tour was the highest-grossing girl group tour of all time.

The article goes on to say it grossed $60m in the U.S. alone (£43m) not including the 52 dates across Europe and the 4 Stadium shows in September.

We can be certain it was at least around the 100m mark, which means with inflation it would be $166m in today's money (using the inflation calculator)

Top three girl group tours of all time must go -

1. Spiceworld 1998

2. Spiceworld 2019

Whatever happened to the animation movie

Last I heard it was still happening but these things go at a snails pace. It was never meant to be in the immediate future though it would be good if it could be end of 2022 or early 2023 just to tie in with things.

What are these 'things' you speak of? :teresa:

It's so quiet here  Understandable though, there's not really anything new to say about them at the moment!

Any Spice related moments that you guys would like to reminisce about?

To be honest, we have been reminiscing non-stop since 2008... after almost 14 years, im f***ing bored :arrr:

Saw their latest instagram stories with footage from Spice Up Your Life in Istanbul saying 'go on to our tick tock to reminisce again' and I couldnt roll my eyes any wider -_-

Hopefully some announcements will come in the next month or so...

Honestly, I've been expecting this project to quietly get cancelled ever since it was announced. Yes, film projects take time...but I don't believe we've heard a peep about the production for well over two years.

Maybe the filmmakers are seeing something here that I'm not...but I view this as a major gamble. I can understand the girls' interest in it...as a means of getting their music introduced to a new generation. Here's my concern. An animated film is generally going for kids. Others may catch it. But kids are the ultimate target... and they'll be quite a bit younger than who the group's actual core audience tends to be. There are film/TV properties that can get introduced to kids and experience a renaissance. We just saw this with the Looney Toons and the new Space Jam. I'm just not convinced this applies to music acts. When I was a kid in the 90s, would my friend circle have gone to an animated film of, say, the Bee Gees? Not a chance. We knew a few of their songs. We liked a few of their songs (I did, anyway). But ultimately, our generation had their own music acts.

The girls still have a core audience out there, though they're largely in their 20s, 30s, and 40s...and I think the only majorly successful projects they're going to manage at this point will be tours.

Found this archive link. Can anyone shed some light. Apparently the U.S. tour grossed $20.9 million in 1998. I don't know whether this 60m was the U.S. or the whole tour?

Doubt it was just that to be honest. They did a lot of shows in America, plus quite a lot in Europe too. They did 97 shows, playing to 2.1million people. Even if the tickets were somewhat cheap, I doubt it would have 'only glossed' 60million in total including merch. It was a huge tour and still considered the top girlband tour ever.

The $60million quote, I believe, has always been the official US grossing number, even in their wiki and thier previous press releases...

The thing is if a film is successful we aren't talking millions we are talking hundreds of millions in profit. It might flop but if it ended up being amazing, kids loving it, there is so much merch that could be sold from it.

It's a gamble and may fall through who knows but it's the sort of thing that could be massive too.

An animated movie sounds in theory like a good idea, and these things take time. Films are usually in pre-production and development phases for years before they get even a camera rolling or a frame drawn.

So yeah, I wouldnt expect any news from it anytime soon. We might just start to hear tid bits like director name, writers, etc. But nothing much in concrete for a couple more years, probably...

We do actually know the writers. It's the women behind Legally Blonde and 10 Things I Hate About You. I think that was the last story I read about the animated movie production...from June 2019. In all fairness, the writers of Legally Blonde *do* seem to be a good match for a Spice film.

A large part of my concern is...it's just so unprecedented. To me, an animated film is very much what a current act would do, not a group who got their last US top ten in early 1998. Sure, there are plenty of biopics and jukebox musicals out there...but what other film is comparable to this specific concept? I can't come up with anything. I mean, if it honestly does happen, I'll support it. I just can't help but think that if an announcement came out that New Kids On The Block were coming out with an animated movie, I'd just think..."well...that's about three decades too late..." I feel like that perception will haunt this film too. But. If I turn out to be wrong, I'll gladly admit it.

A biopic of the Spice Girls makes more sense to me, really. They made enough of an impact on the 90s to deserve one. I could see a big, fun, quirky film that covers their main years of the 90s...and then concludes with an epic recreation of the Olympics performance. And I think a biopic is a better fit for their fanbase.

Getty Images added some archive footage of the SG press conference in Manchester when they announced their stadium dates in 1998.

There's about 11 videos all around 2 minutes in length.

Ooh that's interesting! I'll watch those asap! Thank you for linking
Love the bit where they are clearly toying with the press pretending they are going to announce a split… Melanie C with the “it’s been an amazing 2 years phenomenal unlike anything anyone else has done…” 🤣 (she’s not wrong there though)
