A lot of Spice loons here will already know about this advert/jingle, but I'm curious if any newer fans on BuzzJack were aware that they launched Channel 5?

Really good quality video and audio!

I seem to remember that in the days prior to the launch, short clips that featured just one girl would get aired every so often... but apart from this random clip of Geri

I've never seen any of the others uploaded. :(

Here's another random video - every time Spice Girls have been referenced on The Simpsons:

Kidding 😋

They are featured in Bradfords Media museum’s history timeline of Television as launching channel 5... it was my favourite bit 😂

Them launching 5 is probably one of their greatest achievements. It will always pop up in trivia and keep their iconic status alive.
I remember randomly seeing that on YouTube when I was like 11, iconic *.* :') Why is it catchy af though
I think the girls got quite a bit of slack for it at the time didn't they? I think it's pretty cool that they launched a TV channel and 5 was a good fit with being all about 5 different girls, 5 different flavours etc.

Yeah I dont think it went well for them at the time, for various reasons. The main one being that they were seen to sell out and Channel 5 is technically another private commercial adventure...

Plus, the amount of advertisement that they did really created some pushback. In the words of Emma, in 1997 they did more adverts than music videos... I think they did like 10 TV adverts that year, not including other merchandise that didnt have TV adverts... It was a wild time...

That advert was cute indeed but having a musical group singing and selling you programmes, was a bit too on the nose, I guess....

I never cared for that advert as the lines about the content of the channel are super cringe and too much like selling your soul for money to me...

See personally I LOVED their sell out to everything! I totally felt in 1997 that I was living in a Spiceworld and I've never seen anything like it since, I'm so glad I was a child at that time as it was just magical for me. Seeing it through adult eyes I'd be more jaded/cynical about it all I'm sure (as many parent's probably were with having to fork out non-stop), but as a child it was just an incredible moment in time. The only thing I've seen come close to the Spice Girls in marketing and merchandise etc is Harry Potter which actually in the long run has totally overtaken them but spread over time (I also bloody love Harry Potter too!)

They are scrambling for a workable idea as the tour is already pushed back a year. You were supposed to be dancing to Wannabe on its release week at Hyde Park.

At least they see determined to do something to celebrate the 25th anniversary but it might be a bit disappointing unless they come up with a great idea that can work during these times.

A reworking video for me could work if they had a 2021 remix, like a Kygo sort of thing and a CD/Vinyl special anniversary release.

I'm not that keen on them remaking the Wannabe music video. There's much better things they can do for the fans to celebrate the 25th anniversary.

1. Rarities album or Spice deluxe edition with a couple of unreleased songs

2. Huge coffee table book which includes a new 2021 photo shoot with all 5 girls

3. Spice World on blu-ray & 4K which includes a commentary track with all 5 girls

4. New documentary focusing on their discography. Disproving the misconception they were a manufactured group by showcasing their songwriting and creative decisions.

That's just off the top of my head.

Non of those things celebrates Wannabe though really.

Are they celebrating Wannabe or their entire career? Only celebrating Wannabe would be a let down.

Well it was to be 25 years a celebration and that all started at Wannabe. Australia early 2021 then UK with Hyde Park the week Wannabe was released.

It is why Melanie C has recently being says 'years' in talk about the girls as it looks unlikely of anything before 2022 now which kinda ruins the whole 25 years celebration. I guess they could release tickets on Wannabe's anniversary and that tie it into 25 years.

I guess Hyde Park could still happen if they can find a way to get it covid secure.
Whats this Hyde Park stuff you been talking about sammy?

It was the plan for the UK leg to end at Hyde Park wannabe release week anniversary. There was still a sticking point, the Spice Girls would only do it if they could bring their own stage, Hyde has their 1 stage that everyone uses but I think they were willing to go through all the risk assessments of getting the Spice Girls stage on to site to secure them.

I guess theoretically it could still happen but it would be a gamble announcing it this year for 2021 and it being cancelled and ruin the big news and surprise if it is then pushed back to 2022. The headliner isn't announced till Nov/Dec usually so we shall see.

So not here for Hyde Park... might actually give that one a miss if they do that. I’ve been to a concert there before and you can’t see anything at all just a waste of money.

Whoa never knew this... Quite the gamble to do this next year if true, and honestly think it would be a bit of a weird move. I could see them doing a one-off like that half way throuhgh the tour but doing it as a'return home' when they could totally fill Wembley Stadiums for a couple of weeks, would be silly.

Same. The sound is terrible and unless you're like at the front, it just sucks as an experience... I would save my money and go to a Stadium/arena gig instead.

Well the main plan for next year was touring those countries they haven't been to and fulfilling a lot of broken promises and dreams for international fans. Of course they know the outcry and back lash they would get if there was no UK dates so a very short stint in the UK including Hyde Park as the final was a nice compromise. I assume Hyde Park is a nice pay cheque too and they don't have to do any of the leg work or catering, security and all the other expenses and faff.

They are aware they toured the UK only last year so it would obviously do well again I'm sure if they toured the UK again but it probably wouldn't be the gold ticket it was in 2019. A lot of casual fans will have ticked seeing the girls off their bucket list.

The 4 agreed in principle to tour and the times they would tour. The tour booker SJM again were looking and pencilling in dates. That is where it got to.

Hyde Park is a totally shite idea for a pop group.

I saw Madonna there and it was the worst experience (i have seen her over 20 times).

Hyde Park suits rock artists that just stand there!.

I guess they want to tick it off as they have not done it.
