December 26, 20177 yr Everyday was a pretty poor choice of single from Ariana; she had so many better to choice from the album. Down was a pretty rubbish first song to release without Camila. Killed any momentum they had from the last album. Great to see Blinded By Your Grace in here. Stormzy's really had a great year. No More Sad Songs is probably the weakest single from Glory Days but it's still a massive tune. :D Strip That Down is the first ex-1D member song that I've been able to really get into. Ready For It isn't a classic from her but it's grown on me loads since I've heard the album. I'm The One is one of my favourite official #1s of the year. Chance's verse in particular is a highlight.
December 26, 20177 yr So many good songs! Cheat Codes/Fonsi/Taylor deserve some love! Surprised and delighted to see you chatted Ansel, Thief had a sound similar to The Weeknd so obviously I loved it :D
December 27, 20177 yr Author Cheers for the comments all! Had a little break over Christmas but let's get this show back on the road, starting with my #8 artist...
December 27, 20177 yr Author Artists 8 Dua Lipa It's funny to look back and see what Dua Lipa's prospects seemed to be a year ago. She'd recently had a minor hit with Blow Your Mind (Mwah), but neither that nor Hotter Than Hell seemed to do as well as the hype around her would suggest. Would she be the latest in a long line of failed pop females? It seemed that way at the time, particularly with the album suffering a long line of pushbacks. Thankfully, Dua wasted no time in changing things. She scored a whopping three hits within the first two months of the year. Two collaborations with big names Sean Paul and Martin Garrix were good moves, and the former gave her a first top 10 hit, but it was the addition of Be the One that finally proved Dua's promise as a chart-worthy artist. It outdid No Lie by peaking at #9, and showed impressive longevity. She almost killed things again with Lost In Your Light, but with a moderately successful album finally under her belt come June, Dua seemed to be making good progress. Things got better still with the arrival of the New Rules music video. The song was an album highlight anyway, but the empowering music video made me truly love the song. The video sent out a brilliant message of strong independent women without feeling remotely contrived, and it's no surprise that the video was instrumental in New Rules skyrocketing to the #1 spot in the UK. Whilst I'm not doing a music video countdown, New Rules would absolutely be my favourite music video of the year. I was excited for Dua's album and had been since Be the One's original release at the end of 2015 (!). It didn't disappoint either, I've revisited it a lot, and it sounded absolutely fantastic live when I saw Dua at the O2 Academy in Brixton last month. Shout out to Scared to Be Lonely too, my favourite Dua song of the year, but I'll chat more about that later on. All in all, a superb year for Dua, and I think this is just the start for her. New Rules finally gave Dua the identity she needed for the British public, and I think her next era could be absolutely massive. Here's hoping!

Be the One re-entered my chart this year, having peaked at #5 at the very end of 2015, and climbed back into the top 20. It more than doubled its previous chart run, cementing itself as a solid hit, although in my EOY this year I can only rank it based on the past 12 months really. I have no doubt that if I took into account how much I've enjoyed Be the One since 2015, it would be very comfortably top 100! One of the interesting things about my EOY is that it covers December 2016 to November 2017. This leads to some anomalies - not many, but a few songs look out of place because they seem very much 2016. Matt Terry's When Christmas Comes Around was a fleeting hit both officially and in my chart, and as a result, it doesn't feel remotely 2017, but here it is. His Christmas hit was appreciated by me last year but naturally didn't have a great deal of longevity. Everything else in this section is most definitely 2017 related, although Tinie Tempah's Text from Your Ex feels like so long ago that it may as well be 2016  Tinie's career seemed to go off the rails after Girls Like for a reason I never really understood, although while Text from Your Ex is a nice bit of fun, it's not a Tinie classic. Tiësto's On My Way similarly feels like a long time ago, and despite it sounding straight out of Kungs' back catalogue, it's a great song and a surprise hit in my chart for sure! Maty Noyes has notched up a consistent run of hits since her feature on Kygo's Stay last year, and London became her third top 10 hit earlier this year. It's easily the most bonkers song I've charted this year, but hugely infectious. The problem seemed to be that ti came at the wrong time in her career. I think she could've built up momentum with a more hit-sounding single, but London isn't a hit in the slightest. From one BJSC artist of mine to another, Alyssa Reid's achieved at least one top 10 hit in my chart since her debut in 2012. High was her only chart entry in 2017. It's a very on-trend song, with that familiar future bass feel to it, but it's a really fresh sounding track to me. Now for two artists I've considered sending to BJSC but didn't (although not with these specific songs). Australian popstar Jai Waetford scored two simultaneous top 10 hits this year, doubling his total from two to four, and the first of which is Drunk Together. The song, which is a collaboration with Allday, is very slick and would be a huge hit if it were by a more established artist I think. Swedish popstar Benjamin Ingrosso made his chart debut in 2016 with #1 hit Fall In Love, and has followed that up with three top 10 hits this year. One More Time is the first to appear, a catchy tropical pop song. Finally, a couple of dance songs finish the section. Selena Gomez hasn't missed the top 10 in my chart with one of her solo releases since Slow Down (and even then, that's a chart regret), and Wolves continued the streak recently when it peaked at #9. It's the first of four songs for Selena, and the only one not to have made my weekly top 5, but it's the final appearance of Marshmello and his biggest hit to date. Relatively unknown DJ Perttu scored a hit with Good Good earlier this year. It's a song I discovered when looking for BJSC potentials, and although I didn't send it in the end, I came very close! It's a very relaxed track, and I love the vibe it has going. Recommendation LfToPYO8DXU

Kent Jones - Not in Love | 13-10-8-10-16-23-31-X (7 weeks) 150 Camila Cabello - I Have Questions | 9-17-29-38-X (4 weeks) Making her second appearance of four, Camila Cabello drops out at #150 with promotional track I Have Questions. It's a huge shame this won't be seeing the light of day on her album after all I think, it's a stunning track and made a great pairing with Crying in the Club. Just one spot higher is a hit from this time last year. M.O followed up the sublime Who Do You Think Of? with another solid track in the form of Not in Love, a track which had a healthy run in my chart. It's not a song I've heard in ages actually and it's a shame it didn't quite manage the top 40, pretty much bringing a halt to their careers :drama: From a hit this time last year, to a track that was impacting at the time of the cut-off point. Alan Walker's Faded made a brief impact in last year's EOY chart, making it to #229, but All Falls Down has done even better. The collaboration with Noah Cyrus and Digital Farm Animals made it to #8 in my weekly chart just before the cut-off point, and it actually climbed a week later to #5, meaning I may be allowing it into next year's EOY chart too :magic: Dua Lipa continues her domination, appearing on this year's highest non-top 10 hit. Sean Paul collaboration No Lie was a slow-burning smash, making it to #14 and spending a huge 11 weeks in my weekly chart. Whilst it didn't quite make the top 10, it's still a great track and extremely infectious. Just one spot above is Iggy Azalea with her highest appearance this year. Switch was a great track and if she wasn't suddenly a hate figure amongst the music community, it would've been a hit I think, particularly with the addition of Latin sensation Anitta. It's taken the online community by storm, but Katy Perry's Bon Appétit is my least favourite of her 2017 output. Whilst it's a fun track, it was an absolutely baffling single choice and I knew from the moment I heard it that it wouldn't be a hit. It followed #1 hit Chained to the Rhythm by peaking at a disappointing #7, behind new releases from Kygo and The Vamps that week, when I'd expected a brand new Katy track to be a #1 contender. Sabrina Carpenter's been on my radar for a while now, and she scored a #8 hit last year with On Purpose, but she made a big impact after her support slot on The Vamps' tour earlier this year. Thumbs entered my chart for the first time, debuting at #7. It's a stormer of a pop track and it's a shame radio hasn't picked up on her talent for pop hits yet. Speaking of The Vamps, they feature at the top of this section. They teamed up with Matoma for a second time, and released Staying Up. It's a quirky dance track which is exceptionally catchy and reminds me of Sigala. Unfortunately, it didn't have much staying power, and is officially this year's lowest #1 single. Also in this section are Kiiara and Felix Snow with their collaboration Whippin. Both have two appearances in this year's EOY, with this being Kiiara's first and Felix's second. Whippin is a quirky little track, true to form for Kiiara's sound, but it was my favourite thing by her to date when it got released. However, she bettered it since then, with one more hit to come. George Shelley also makes his final appearance, with Soldier being the best showing of his eligible tracks this year. Recommendation uAVUl0cAKpo

British singer/songwriter The Beach added two top 10 hits alongside 2016's Geronimo this year. The first to appear is promo single Bridge Back to Your Heart, which peaked at #6 in the early months of the year. I sent The Beach to BJSC this year (not with that song), as well as Frans Walfridsson and Citizen Four. Both appear with other top 10 hits in this section. Swedish upcoming popstar Frans has two tracks to appear, with debut single Emergency Call appearing first, while American boyband Citizen Four appear with Want You Back, also their first appearance of two, but it's their last with original member Josh Levi who left shortly after. A song that never quite took off like I thought it might, I really enjoyed Snakehips & MØ's team-up on Don't Leave. Plenty of replayability factor and I never really grew tired of it, definitely my favourite Snakehips song to date. Paloma Faith's Crybaby also never seemed to quite get going, which is a shame because it's yet another solid lead single from a brilliant album. I guess we have streaming to blame for that one. We also see another Taylor track drop out in this section. Call It What You Want was the final promotional track to be released pre-reputation, and it's the best of them all for me, being the only one to make my top 10. This leaves just one Taylor track in the running...! Benjamin Ingrosso makes his second appearance of three as Do You Think About Me appears at #135, while the emotional but important chart hit from Logic, entitled 1-800-273-8255, is one place above. The song itself took a little while to grow on me, and what finally did it was the VMAs performance. It was packed full of emotion and finally, the song clicked, even if I always appreciated the message. Whilst I prefer Kygo's other two singles this year, I don't dislike First Time like many seem to. Ellie Goulding's vocals sound brilliant and the production is actually less Kygo-by-numbers to my ears than It Ain't Me for example. Finally, rounding out the section is Manel Navarro, with a song he actually released in mid 2016. I discovered it early in 2017, just a week or two before he was announced as taking part in the Spanish Eurovision selection. It's Manel's first appearance of three! Recommendation vj3AAnK8cVQ
December 30, 20177 yr Author Artists 7 Manel Navarro 99% of the time, a discography that consists of three singles and one EP wouldn't really make a dent on my top 10 artists of the year. It takes something special to get there, and it's quite impressive that Spanish singer/songwriter Manel Navarro has managed it despite a small back catalogue to date. I first heard of Manel at the very start of 2017, when I saw a teaser for Do It for Your Lover on the josepvinaixa music blog (RIP). Out of curiosity, I checked out his previous single Candle, and although the tropical instrumental feels a little shoehorned, it was a nice little track. Do It for Your Lover came out about a week or two later, alongside the announcement that he was in the running to represent Spain at Eurovision! It was exciting news, and Do It for Your Lover was instantly great to my ears. A catchy, feel-good song with no strings attached. Things didn't go all that smoothly though. Whilst Manel won the Spanish selection, it was due to a tiebreaker with the panel ultimately selecting Manel instead of the public's favourite Mirela. The audience reception in the studio was pretty horrible to watch, as there were boos aplenty when Manel was crowned champion. He never really gathered much support, and in Eurovision, he came last in the final, not helped by a pretty weakly staged performance with shaky vocals. It was a shame really, because neither Manel nor the song seemed to get the recognition they deserved at Eurovision, and last in the final is a very rough deal. I'm still not over the reaction to his national final win though - do people really care enough that they'd boo if their favourite doesn't win? What happened to being good losers? If Mirela won, I wouldn't be sending her abusive tweets. It baffles me really and it's disappointing. I had the pleasure of meeting Manel in October when he came to the UK to play at the Hard Rock Café in London. Not many people turned up to hear him play (most of the audience were people eating their dinner lol), but it was a fantastically intimate performance. Manel performed Do It for Your Lover and Keep On Falling, as well as some new original songs and a couple of covers. Chatting to him was a pleasure too, I met him as he arrived at the venue and got this selfie. Later on, he came outside to have a cigarette, and he came and stood with me and had a chat. When I've met singers before, it's often in a busy environment with security so you don't get to chat too much, but it was different here. It was just me and him talking, about all sorts from Ed Sheeran to my own job  He later came and sat down with me outside while he tuned his guitar too. It was nice to know he was so down to earth, and it's possibly my favourite moment of the entire year. Here's to more new music next year, I have faith that it'll be brilliant!

Whilst it outpeaked Slow Hands, it falls behind it in my EOY chart with a shorter shelf life in the end. Shane Harper scored a pretty big hit with Like I Did, another solid pop track with two stints at becoming a hit in my top 40. I considered sending it to BJSC at the start of the year, but ultimately decided not to, much like Jai Waetford's Champagne - his second appearance of two. Also in this section is Australian budding popstar and former boyband member Tom Jay Williams, who makes his first appearance of two. Figure It Out is a fun little dance pop track, although not as good as his debut release Closure, which is still to come. On the topic of former boyband members, Tom used to be a member of a band called At Sunset, who never made my top 40 as I wasn't actually aware of them while they were together. However, I was certainly aware of Suite 16, a Norwegian group who scored a top 5 hit with Anna-Lee in 2016. The group is still active now, but with two original members departing and one new member joining. One of the departed members is Alexandru (Grindvoll), who released his debut solo single Sellotape recently. It's a fun little pop track, and it made it to #4 in my weekly chart. Her second and final appearance this year, Hailee Steinfeld's Most Girls proved to be a slow burner but eventually made it to #6 in my chart, becoming her second chart hit. BJSC track Last Dance by Rhys pops up at #124, her only chart hit to date, whilst Declan McKenna makes his first appearance in my songs countdown. Why Do You Feel So Down is the third top 10 hit from my album of the year What Do You Think About the Car?, having made #9 a few months back. Manel Navarro pops up again with Keep On Falling, a touching acoustic track that shows his vulnerable side. Finally, we lose another #1, as George Ezra's muted comeback track Don't Matter Now proved itself to have a short shelf life. It prevented Jax Jones' Instruction from the top, and that's still to appear, so perhaps it wasn't quite deserving of the #1 spot. Nevertheless, it's a quirky little summer track and I wish it achieved more chart success. Recommendation vEzXKF1_7PE
January 1, 20187 yr It was really nice to Be The One become a hit. Dua had such a good year. Two of which occurred within the past 12 months, and the first to appear is No Party, which peaked at #5. It's a nice little track, and a sign that he seemed to have mastered his sound after previous hit Good As It Gets was on a similar note. One spot above is Maggie Lindemann's new single, an instant top 3 hit on my chart when released just a week before the cut-off point. Kygo's Stargazing was also an instant top 3. Whilst it followed a very similar pattern to It Ain't Me musically, I still enjoyed it and it matched its peak, even if its longevity was less good. It Ain't Me is Kygo's only remaining song, while Maggie has two further tracks to appear. Despite a good amount of longevity for Slow Hands, Niall Horan just can't get into my top 100, which is a shame as Slow Hands really hit me after the One Love Manchester concert earlier this year, as did Miley Cyrus' Malibu even though she didn't perform it. Malibu is my favourite Miley song so far, I love the unpretentious and cool vibe it has, perfect for the summer. A few dance songs impact in this section, firstly from Grey, who make their second and final appearance. I checked out I Miss You out of curiosity after how much I enjoyed their Hailee Steinfeld collaboration Starving, and whilst I Miss You isn't particularly different from its predecessor, I really enjoyed it still. Alex Ross served up a brilliant cover of Gabrielle's classic hit Dreams, bringing on board Dakota and T-Pain. Also, former Swedish House Mafia members Axwell and Ingrosso teamed up once again for the latest single in their project, More Than You Know, which was quite comfortably the best track I've heard from them, very instant and infectious. Eurovision now, and Isaiah (Firebrace) represented Australia at the contest this year. Despite a bum note in the semi final, Isaiah made the final and finished in the top 10 with a lot of help from the international juries. Don't Come Easy is a really good track, and whilst it's along the same lines as his debut single It's Gotta Be You, I prefer it. Isaiah has one more song to come, however. Finally, man of the moment Ed Sheeran drops out with his #2 hit (in both my chart and the UK) Castle on the Hill. I grew tired of Castle pretty quickly and it fell out of my chart as quickly as it entered unfortunately. Recommendation JHgMp6Jugms
