10. Danny L Harle - 1UL

WOW was my first thought when I heard this. Ramping PC Music up to its all-time peak for me, this is about as chart friendly and commercial as a song from the genre is ever likely to get, yet still it got no commercial support.

Can you actually imagine Justin Bieber releasing this as the lead single from his next album? I can actually envisage his vocals on it quite easily and you just know it would be a mega selling No.1, and kick start a new PC trend in music - do the right thing in 2018 Justin, at least get Danny L Harle producing something for your next album.

Broken Flowers made my EOY 2016 chart but 1UL is in another league altogether, taking influences from mid 90s dance and also reminding me vaguely of steel pan banger Sunburn from ATB's debut album Movin' Melodies. A completely genius song and one my anthems of summer 2017.

9. Rae Morris - Do It

Perennially underrated Rae Morris is no stranger to my EOY charts. In 2012 she took the beautiful Don't Go to No.5 and in 2014 she had big hits for me with Do You Even Know and Cold. Gearing up for the release of her second album early next year, she's put a few singles out this year, including the great Atletico, but it was Do It which struck the biggest chord with me.

An island tinged jam that Rihanna or Keri Hilson would have longed for in 2011, Do It is effortlessly brilliant pop, with a hook that never leaves your head even if you only hear it once. And the music video is so good too, cleverly integrating a karaoke moment to the similarly named Do It Like A Dude, and there's a brilliant fireworks reaction moment just over two minutes in too. I will never stop championing Rae Morris. How is this girl not huge yet?

8. Ed Sheeran - Shape Of You

Rather astonishingly, this is already the UK's third biggest song of all-time going by combined sales and streaming data. Ed Sheeran has been the face and voice of 2017, relentlessly everywhere from the 6th January right through to the very end of the year, and it all kicked off with the dual single release of Castle On The Hill and this track.

Ed may have preferred Castle to perform better commercially but that was never going to happen. Give the public a tropical house tinged single and they will lap it up. I'm obviously part of this narrative, because while the sound has become tiring for the most part, every now and then a tropical gem is thrown up and Shape Of You is certainly one of these. An instantly memorable 'have I heard this before' chord sequence (which many believe was inspired by TLC's iconic No Scrubs) was paired with some typical Ed 'lad culture 2K17' lyrics and the result was always going to be a mega No.1. So huge it was at the top for 14 weeks in total.

I may be the only person on BuzzJack to have this in my EOY top 10, as the song and Ed have been so overexposed, but there is just something so effortless about this groove that I weirdly can't get over.

7. Rita Ora - Anywhere

Since her launch in 2012 I have really not been at all interested in Rita Ora, save for Radioactive which I really liked. How We Do, Hot Right Now and even I Will Never Let You Down, are my favourites of her big hits to date but I can't say I'm madly in love with any of them. Your Song did nothing to rectify this and once again I was left wondering what I was missing with Rita, and how she continues to churn out the hits.

But then came Anywhere. I didn't listen to it for a few days on release as I didn't really expect much from it, but I was wrong to judge on past form. Is there a more effortless, melodic chorus in a UK hit single this year than 'over the hills and far away...'? It sounds like the sort of chorus a manufactured pop band might have come out with in 2001 but with 2017 production slapped all over it.

I'm so delighted that this was been a huge hit for Rita because it hopefully means a number of things. Firstly that her own music might move more into this pure pop direction and secondly that other artists might see that huge melodic classic pop choruses can still work commercially. In a world of instrumental drops in place of choruses and beat-driven tracks with melodies that don't go anywhere, this stands out hugely and is by far the best thing Rita has ever done for me.

6. Dua Lipa - New Rules

The female artist song that caused the biggest impact this year? Easy. Dua Lipa's New Rules. From the first time I (and everyone else) heard the album it was pretty clear that a trick had been missed by not leading the album with this song. Head and shoulders above the other album tracks, this was clearly a smash but there was always a concern that it would just be left to rot away on the album and not granted a single release.

Luckily Dua/her label saw the hit potential in New Rules and it was unleashed with probably the best mainstream artist music video for a few years, and one which clearly helped the song to crossover. Its lyrics are its other obvious strong point, a list of modern rules to follow that I can't recall being done in a huge smash pop single before, or at least for a long time. The chorus is probably the most quotable piece of pop culture to emerge in 2017, and is worthy advice for anybody to follow.

After being on the fringe of a breakthrough for such a long time, it's brilliant to see Dua finally make it properly with New Rules - the first solo female No.1 in a ridiculous two years - and it will be exciting to follow her career from this point onwards as the global success of this track will only help her to get the best producers and songwriters on board for her next project.

5. P!nk - What About Us

Of all the artists to launch their career around the turn of the millennium, the one I wouldn't have put money on still being as big as ever in 2017 is probably P!nk. Almost effortlessly moving from one era to the next with little to no dip in relevance, she returned this year with What About Us. Admittedly a way bigger hit on sales than streaming, just as the follow-up has been, it doesn't look that good for her future singles chart prospects but I think we can confidently predict she'll be a major album seller for many years to come.

So what is so good about What About Us? In truth I'm not entirely sure, but I was bowled over the first time I heard it and it's been impressing me ever since. Maybe it's the political relevance, maybe it's hearing that familiar recognisable, emotive and powerful voice again, maybe it's that simple but very effective chorus, maybe it's just being so impressed that after nearly 20 years, with little fanfare, she still has a relevant message to share when basically all of her contemporaries have fallen by the wayside. It's probably all of these, but there is something special about this song, the video, the artist and everything else about it that make this truly wonderful to me.

It is comfortably my favourite song of hers ever, passing the likes of So What and U & Ur Hand with some ease, with only the superstar collaboration Lady Marmalade rivalling it in my affections.

4. Steps - Neon Blue

The first time I heard Steps' comeback album Tears On The Dancefloor, there was a clear album track highlight to me, and that song was Neon Blue. Tucked away towards the very back of the album, I wonder if the band expected this song to be so well received, but it quickly became a fan favourite and was eventually released as the third single from the album.

Featuring the entire group on vocals at various times, which is a rarity and always great to see, the song has an uplifiting and positive message and the chorus is basically the best thing that Kylie never got round to recording. A huge, sparkling, bubbly pop song of the sort that only Steps could probably get away with in 2017, I was pleased to see they chose it as a single and it went down pretty well on tour compared to some of the other new songs. Deservedly so and it's only a shame I didn't have a place in my top three for it.

3. Steps - Story Of A Heart

In third place for the year, the second single from Tears On The Dancefloor, a cover of Benny Andersson Band's 2009 single Story Of A Heart. I loved the original version of this, which made my EOY chart that year, but the Steps version definitely elevates it to another level. First time I heard it was the first of 10 listens in a row and I did wonder if this could challenge to be my favourite song of the year, but ultimately it wasn't to be.

Still, it's an 11/10 moment for so many reasons. Firstly the songwriting pedigree of Benny and Bjorn should never be underestimated - along with Avicii they unexpectedly topped my 2013 EOY chart with Eurovision opening anthem We Write The Story. This song was pretty much made for Steps and I'm so glad they decided to cover it, it's the closest we probably get to their classic sound on the new album.

Other highlights include the perfect vocals - Claire sounds vulnerable yet gorgeous on the first verse while Faye smashes the second verse out of the park, 'the house by the lake' channelling Agnetha Faltskog's purity and clarity perfectly. And Lisa delivers a suitably excellent middle eight, of the sort she was always well known for. The nostalgia tinged music video, packed with pastel colours and complete with hilarious OTT product placement for HP's Sprocket mini printer, was another delight. And a final mention goes to the 7th Heaven remix, which was almost as good as the radio edit, and indeed on tour they even did a medley combining the two versions.

2. Steps - Scared Of The Dark

Turning in the most dominant end of year performance since Delta Goodrem snatched the entire top four in 2003, it's only a shame that Steps couldn't also take the top spot here. But three our of four ain't bad.

Scared Of The Dark was of course Faye, Lisa, H, Lee and Claire's long-awaited comeback single, actually only their first since 2012's Light Up The Dark but the general public at large were probably not really aware of that so for most it was the first since 2001. And it certainly felt like a huge event, quickly smashing its way to No.1 on iTunes and succeeding where many others failed by knocking Ed Sheeran from the top of that chart.

Of course it wasn't a streaming hit of any sort and this cost it dearly, ending up at No.37 officially (with what must be a record sale for this century of 17k) but at least unexpectedly giving the band their first top 40 hit in 16 years! And it hung around at the top of the sales chart for a little while too, eve re-emerging just outside the top 40 officially a few weeks later. Had ACR/album domination rules been introduced earlier it would have been closer to the top 20, so there's that too.

The track itself is just a masterpiece. A blistering string into gives way to a classic Faye verse (she almost always starts their hits) before moving onto Claire and the biggest schlager chorus heard outside Melodifestivalen/Eurovision since Alcazar were at their peak in the mid 00s. Complete with a huge key change, a dance routine, naturally, and the band's first music video since 2001, everything about this track is spot on and was the perfect way to reintroduce the band to the general public and set up a gold selling comeback album. The track opened the group's recent in the most dramatic and fantastic way, and the track has quickly gone into their canon as a fan favourite.

1. Wiktoria - As I Lay Me Down

It has to be said...this song was miles out ahead at No.1, in the least competitive end of year chart for many years. Swedish singer Wiktoria made my end of year chart last year with her 2016 Melodifestivalen entry Save Me, which finished second on the public vote. This year she decided to return for a second go, to see if the public would get behind her again.

As I Lay Me Down competed in the same heat as Loreen's Statements. With Euphoria being my second favourite song ever, and this being her return to the Melodifestivalen stage, I was naturally more excited to hear that. I liked Statements a lot but was more blown away by the radio smasher Wiktoria was serving up.

Basically the best song B*Witched never released, this was a pop song stepping out of 1998 and into 2017 and I have been living for it since the first listen. That post chorus breakdown that also serves as the outro is the most gloriously 90s thing ever and it's only a shame the song comes to an abrupt halt rather than using the synthesised guitar crunch sound effect at the end of C'est La Vie, which this track quite clearly owes such a huge debt to.

Wiktoria herself also seems like the sweetest girl in pop, and in a world of Spotify bops and everything sounding exactly the same, it was so refreshing to hear such a huge pop song (with a slight country influence) from a pure popstar. It reached No.2 in Sweden, becoming the biggest hit from Melodifestivalen this year there, and deservedly so. The public were also behind her once again, as she raced to second again in the public vote, but sadly the juries were not and my dreams of seeing this at Eurovision were shattered. Nevertheless, it was such a joy to be there in Stockholm as she performed this at Melodifestivalen and I probably gave her the biggest cheer in the whole crowd.

I cannot wait to see what Wiktoria's musical future holds, she has so much potential and the fact that this song never got a release outside Sweden (where it racked up about 20 million streams alone) is pure idiocy on behalf of the record label. With the right push this track, and Wiktoria, could have gone global.

That's a lot of Steps :P Scared of the Dark is still my favourite, great to see an artist like Steps being able to go Top 40

New Rules, What About Us and Anywhere are all great as well!

I do love Story of a heart. Did you like any of the bonus tracks on the deluxe edition, they were more similar to 90s Steps material.

I heard only the first version of new Steps' album. :)

My favourite version of "Story Of My Heart".

Edited by Good Old Days

As I Lay Me Down is bloody fab and a deserved EOY number 1, such a joyful song  Her vocals fit it much more than Save Me (which I did like anyway) as well, I was gutted it floundered in the final compared to how it could have done in MF :(
64. Oh Laura – (Re) Release Me

I didn't find new version on Youtube, but the original is perfect. :)

P.S : I gave 2nd place for "Boogieman Blues" in my MF ranking of 2017.

Thanks Joseph, I ran through it quickly  Agree with you on As I Lay Me Down, a much better song, but Robin's slick performance won the juries over. Agree with you about P!nk, Rita and Ed!

Ahh yes for sure, I mean how on earth Take Me Home was left on Delta I don't know, considering some of the filler on there.

Thought you'd approve of FO&O, it's a great song!

Must say thanks for Tina Guo, it was a fantasic discovery in BJSC and led me to the check out the whole Game On! album, my favourite was her version of the Pokemon theme *.*

great charts!

Thanks Rob, yasssss. Glad you liked some of my BJSC entries, and yes keep on listening to Wiktoria haha. Don't agree with you on Royals, No.3 in my 2013 EOY chart :o Unforgettable is a great song, sounds amazing in the sun, with the island influences. Carly's song is not as good as some of her E-motion stuff but still very good for me. Yes Funeral is very good by Zara and I definitely recommend listening to her album and Dua's (Kelly's isn't as good as those).

That's a lot of Steps :P Scared of the Dark is still my favourite, great to see an artist like Steps being able to go Top 40

New Rules, What About Us and Anywhere are all great as well!

Much love for Steps in 2017, such a great album and Scared of the Dark was SUCH a brilliant comeback single.

I heard only the first version of new Steps' album. :)

My favourite version of "Story Of My Heart".

I heard that version too but didn't like it as much as the Steps version, the original is very good too by Benny's band.

As I Lay Me Down is bloody fab and a deserved EOY number 1, such a joyful song  Her vocals fit it much more than Save Me (which I did like anyway) as well, I was gutted it floundered in the final compared to how it could have done in MF :(

Yasss, completely agree <3 Save Me is good too, nearly made my top 50 of last year but for me this was a step up in every way. I was expecting her to be 2nd or 3rd at worst in the final so I'm gutted the juries abandoned it, so curious as to how it would have done at Eurovision, maybe her voice would have gone through some people (though I love it).

I didn't find new version on Youtube, but the original is perfect. :)

P.S : I gave 2nd place for "Boogieman Blues" in my MF ranking of 2017.

The new version is a little bit more electronic and brings it up to date, but quite similar overall. It's a lovely song in any version though <3

Boogieman Blues is so infectious, unexpectedly love it!

Absolutely love 1UL, Feels, Instruction and Symphony - all those will appear in my top 40. A great selection of tunes here otherwise, three great BJSC entries of yours in the top 30 here too. Anywhere is brilliant too but I'll be charting that highly in next this upcoming year's EOY.

Thanks Dan, 1UL is so so good, I'm so gutted something as good as this didn't get a push in the UK, though even if it did I expect it would have made top 100 on iTunes and that's it or something. Imagine a world where songs like this were at the top of the Spotify chart!

Glad you're liking those BJSC entries of mine too, there was some great dance stuff around the underground this year <3
