Posted December 30, 20177 yr On New Year's Day I will count down my Top 100 singles of 2017 as compiled using points from my weekly personal chart. As always, expect NO surprises. Plus: It won't take 6 centuries to count it down, it will be done in 1 day. It won't start in the middle of November when the year is nowhere near finished It won't include random album tracks that nobody really cares about just the hot hit singles and nothing else It won't feature overly long commentary that is tl;dr It won't feature any Ed Sheeran It won't have any albums that frankly no1curr about It will have 100 things that have been recorded in a music studio, were subsequently released and promoted on sale to the general public, and can be described (quite loosely in some cases) objectively as 'music' Here's what I quite liked last year. Yes all of the cover art links have died - FUCK YOU PHOTOBUCKET. Here are the songs which did the hard work and placed at number 1 through 2017: 01/01/17 Bonobo “Kerala” (3) 22/01/17 Run The Jewels “Legend Has It” (2) 05/02/17 Sampha “(No One Knows Me) Like The Piano” (4) 05/03/17 Young Fathers “Only God Knows” (4) 02/04/17 Sylvan Esso “Kick Jump Twist” (2) 16/04/17 Lorde “Green Light” (2) 30/04/17 alt-J “3WW” (1) 07/05/17 Perfume Genius “Slip Away” (2) 21/05/17 Danny Brown “Ain't It Funny” (3) 11/06/17 LCD Soundsystem “Call The Police / American Dream” (2) 25/06/17 The War on Drugs “Thinking Of A Place” (4) 23/07/17 Arcade Fire “Everything Now” (2) 06/08/17 The xx “I Dare You” (2) 20/08/17 Indian Wells “Cascades” (3) 10/09/17 The National “Guilty Party” (2) 24/09/17 The Horrors “Something To Remember Me By” (7) 12/11/17 King Krule “Dum Surfer” (3) 03/12/17 MGMT “Little Dark Age” (1) 10/12/17 Young Fathers “Lord” (3*)

Arcade Fire released what many felt was a disappointing album, though I really enjoyed the two singles released from it and both make the Top 100, first up is “Creature Comfort” at #98. The xx had a brilliant year with I See You providing them with two number 1s and a total of four Top 10s, all of which appear here! New Manchester electronic artist Floating Points scored one of the many instrumental dance hits on my chart of the year with “Ratio” going Top 10 in December and just about creeping in despite not finishing its chart run yet. MUNA came back strong with their biggest hit so far in January when the catchy pop goodness of “I Know A Place” went to #6, and one of the pop albums of the year from Lorde spawned two Top 10 hits here - the first to appear - “Perfect Places” went to #7 in the summer and rounds out this first set.
January 1, 20187 yr love 'Ratio', could be a big hit for me this year, brilliant synthy production - the radio edit that is, I can't at the full version being 18 minutes long

Vince Staples “Ascension” Debut: 26th March 2017 / CR: 36-22-15-08-06-11-18-25-35-44 (10 weeks) Some relatively big hits here, the ‘suffering-from-straddling-two-years’ effect is apparent for the brilliantly powerful “We The People....” by A Tribe Called Quest which went Top 10 in December 2016 but peaked on the very first chart of January at #3. Wolf Alice scored a big hit with “Don’t Delete The Kisses” in late October which places at #81. Elsewhere the first of two for Gorillaz (with help from Vince Staples) who came back with their first LP for 6 years - Humanz. There are some excellent debuts here, firstly for 23 year-old Londoner Loyle Carner whose debut Yesterday's Gone was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize.. the lead single from it “The Isle of Arran” went Top 10 in February and charts here at #88. Sampha had a brilliant year with his debut LP scooping the Mercury, and his collaboration with XL records owner Richard Russell followed his two number one hits from his self-titled debut into the Top 10. Goldfrapp haven't been Top 10 since 2008 but hit #8 with “Anymore” the lead single from seventh studio album Silver Eye. Finally, worth shouting out to the wonderful Ibibio Sound Machine whose African influences are very much on show with the vibrant “Give Me A Reason” at #84. Edited January 1, 20187 yr by Doctor Blind

There are some unexpected comebacks here, namely from The Killers who returned to the Top 10 for the first time since 2009 with the brilliant “Run For Cover”, apparently written around that time (when Day & Age was released). Also back in emphatic style were Jamiroquai with the synth and disco influenced “Automaton” which shot to #7 in March (though it sadly failed to chart in the UK). Current hit, and strong contender for lyric of the year, “To The Moon And Back” by Fever Ray is currently at #2 and should continue to remain a Top 10 fixture well into 2018. Pharrell Williams got his biggest hit since “Get Lucky” in 2013 when he teamed up with Cat Power and Cassius on the irresistibly catchy “Go Up” which climbed as high as #5 in February. Quite an eclectic set of 10 with big pop anthems from Bleachers “Don’t Take The Money” at 69 (a track that won BJSC in the summer), indie-ballads from Lana Del Rey’s “Love” at 70 and Cigarettes After Sex’s “Apocalypse” at 64 placed among dance bangers from Orbital with “Kinetic 2017” at 66 and Classixx’ “Possessive” at 65. “Possessive” features a sample of a gospel choir singing a line from the infamous (All you f** king w***rs who didnt want Nick Jonas to be #1 suck my d!!! ) Nick Jonas NUMBER TWO UK hit “Jealous”. Orbital returned by re-recording their side project Golden Girls 1992 hit “Kinetic” to tremendous effect, it spent a trio of weeks at #6 back in April. The highest of the Everything Everything 2017 singles “Night of the Long Knives” features at 67 and Nadine Shah’s highly politically charged and powerful “Holiday Destination” ends the year at number 62. Rostam Batmanglij, formerly of Vampire Weekend released another solo LP this year, and the sugary pop of “Bike Dream” speaks of a complicated love affair between three guys - it stormed to #3 in October and ends the year at #57. Carly Rae Jepsen returned with the upbeat “Cut To The Feeling” to continue her annual Top 5 hit quota that she has been building up since 2015. New singer/songwriter Maggie Rogers hyped into the chart at Christmas last year with the first cut from debut EP Now That the Light Is Fading and “Dog Years” started very well getting to #2 - I look forward to a full debut LP in due course! Finally some dance, the first (still charting) “Spotie” from Jus Now & Dismantle which was rightly HAMMERED by Annie Mac at the end of the summer and Danny L Harle / Morrie collab. “Me4U” at 53.

There are recent big hits here from St. Vincent (“Los Ageless” at 41) and Young Fathers (“Lord” at 47) who in particular had a fantastic 2017 and am very much looking forward to seeing what they put out on forthcoming third studio LP, due early this year. Spoken poetry from Kate Tempest’s somewhat depressing ode to the political climate of 2017 at 42, “Tunnel Vision” is a uncomfortable listen describing the abject apathetic society around us in the face of clear and present injustices, with angry lyrics like “And it was our fuckin' banks that got bailed”. Charli XCX subverted stereotypical gender roles in Super Mario Bros. sampling (to surprisingly great effect) “Boys” at 50, and probably the video of the year was “No Reason” (watch it if you've yet to see it) by Bonobo who released his sixth album Migration in January. Oh and the confusion reigned supreme in the summer when TR/ST charted with “Bicep” (#46) at the same time as Bicep were in the chart - more on them later... Edited January 1, 20187 yr by Doctor Blind

Speaking of ‘baby’, from the film Baby Driver. “Chase Me” by Danger Mouse, Run The Jewels & Big Boi shot into the Top 3 back in July after the films release and takes its influence fromThe Jon Spencer Blues Explosion’s unknown 90s track “Bellbottoms” used heavily in the film. Up until this year Rae Morris has never hugely impressed me - she has scored a couple of minor Top 20 hits - however that was to change this year with the release of “Reborn”, a storming pop anthem with brilliant production that should (if there was any justice) have been a massive hit this year. Sadly radio did not support her and all of the singles to-date have shamefully failed to chart in the UK. “Reborn” spent an impressive 4 weeks locked at #3 on my chart behind two massive summer hits that are in the Top 20. The weirdest track in the chart is most definitely the ear worm from international eight-piece Superorganism and the quirky “Something For Your M.I.N.D.” at #33. “On Hold” was easily the biggest hit from I See You and reinforces its status by charting in both 2016 and 2017, last year it was 77th and despite its 3 weeks at number 1 falling in 2016 it does enough to chart at #35. January 1, 20187 yr Author Chart of 2017: #30 You hate the idea that you're wasting your youth, but you stood in the background until you got older lqq3BtGrpU8 #030 LCD Soundsystem “Tonite” Debut: 20th August 2017 / CR: 34-24-15-09-04-02-03-05-08-13-21-31-40-49 (14 weeks) The album is fantastic throughout, if “How Do You Sleep?” was released it probably would have been my #1 of the year.
January 1, 20187 yr Author Chart of 2017: #29 And my heart, there defrosting in a gaze XQl5KYiiFDI #029 Elbow “Magnificent (She Says)” Debut: 11th December 2016 / CR: 42-34-31-15-10-07-04-03-03-04-07-12-19-29-40-49 (16 weeks) The strings on this are GORGEOUS, and a lovely bit of guitar work throughout the track on this soaring orchestral tribute to becoming a parent.
January 1, 20187 yr Author Chart of 2017: #28 He says I make him nervous, but he only makes me bored, all the pretty things I want, he just can't afford LDUdZAMJjEg #028 Confidence Man “Boyfriend (Repeat)” Debut: 20th August 2017 / CR: 49-37-25-14-08-04-02-03-03-07-13-20-28-39-49 (15 weeks) Confidence Man (the long version of 'con man', a practitioner of confidence tricks) are a collective from a variety of Brisbane bands including The Belligerents, Moses Gunn Collective and the Jungle Giants - “Boyfriend (Repeat)” is a really fun catchy single with a killer bassline.
January 1, 20187 yr Author Chart of 2017: #27 I've been rejected, now the light has turned and I'm out of time 6-oHBkikDBg #027 The War on Drugs “Holding On” Debut: 23rd July 2017 / CR: 41-30-22-13-08-06-04-03-06-09-14-20-29-38-47 (15 weeks) So this is the band that Kurt Vile originally founded but has subsequently left, A Deeper Understanding is the follow-up to 2014s Lost in the Dream and “Holding On” was the 2nd single and very Springsteen sound-a-like cut that had me bopping away through the summer!
January 1, 20187 yr Author Chart of 2017: #26 7pH5dCoy1Hg #026 Four Tet “Two Thousand And Seventeen” Debut: 23rd July 2017 / CR: 37-26-19-12-05-02-02-04-07-12-18-24-30-40-50 (15 weeks) A beautiful instrumental from Four Tet that has a title for a year and a tranquility that belies the instability that the year actually contained. The instrument used to great effect here is the Indo-Persian santoor.
January 1, 20187 yr Author Chart of 2017: #25 And when I’m alone you are my only friend m-bph5TLxvc #025 Formation “A Friend” Debut: 26th February 2017 / CR: 37-25-17-09-05-03-02-02-03-06-13-24-37-50 (14 weeks) WARNING: Contains liberal cowbell use. “A Friend” is by far the best track I've heard from south London’s Formation and has its roots firmly in the groups first original release back in 2014. Lead singer Will Ritson rattles through the lyrics at frantic pace to match the devilishly catchy beat making this one of the best indie songs of the year.
