January 22, 20188 yr I hope Kylie goes top 40 also.. Curious to how will Camilla do on her second week
January 22, 20188 yr Dancing is performing similarily to Make Me and that missed the Top 40 with better streaming IIRC, so I reckon this will land around #50 which would be ironic. Why would that be ironic she 46 years old if that’s what your implying

January 22, 20188 yr Dying to know if Drake can make it this week, He has a really nice lead over River on ITunes and not on Spotify but he lost a day, It can be close and I hope Apple Music will give him the edge.

January 22, 20188 yr The current singles chart has become a joke.... the same songs hanging around for months, the same artists and music genre in the charts... Streaming has made the chart even worse: it is being manipulated by ready made Hot Hits UK streaming lists which r mostly dominated by hip hop and Ed sheeran songs , therefore leave no place for rock bands, and no place for older acts... It has become so predicTable and stale, a far cry from the late 90s and early 00's charts where u had a variety of music genres and artists in the charts, and acts used to chart based solely on the song's popularity among music consumers who actually want the song and therefore go out and purchase it, not passive listeners who just put on a playlist on repeat in their office or at home without caring much about the quality of the songs... January 22, 20188 yr you need a reality check if you think charts were not being manipulated in the past lol, do you think westlife were having #1s cos their songs were the most popular?
January 22, 20188 yr you need a reality check if you think charts were not being manipulated in the past lol, do you think westlife were having #1s cos their songs were the most popular? I'd say its way more manipulated than it was - especially with the whole Spotify/ playlisting thing
January 22, 20188 yr It would certainly be interesting to see if rock would come back into vogue in the charts if half of Hots Hits UK was replaced with rock songs. I get that a lot of modern listeners are passive to an extent, but is this partly because so much music on Hot Hits is inoffensive to the point of not evoking enough emotion in anybody to skip it? And would this therefore continue to be the case if some music was put onto Hot Hits that really didn't suit their general tastes at all? Would they be compelled to skip finally, or would loads of rock music start to clamber into the top 40. Food for thought, but then Spotify are not about to sabotage the playlist so I guess it's a moot point.
January 22, 20188 yr Playlists matter but do you really think that Drake gets 500k listens JUST BECAUSE his song is on a playlist? He is totally an artist who hits the key demographic in terms pop charts. It's not only a case of streaming... Beach Boys didn't get hits in the 90s because they weren't relevant for the key demographic, and Kylie won't get hits now for the same, very obvious, reason. Edited January 22, 20188 yr by SKOB
January 22, 20188 yr I think people would skip rock songs unless they're very mainstream like Imagine Dragons. Not every song that gets on Hot Hits UK becomes an instant hit too, just look at George FitzGerald at the moment who only just scraped the top 200 a few times. Though to be fair, he is very low down on the playlist but I'm sure he'd be getting lots of skips if near the top as the song just isn't very commercial.
January 22, 20188 yr Playlists matter but do you really think that Drake gets 500k listens JUST BECAUSE his song is on a playlist? Exactly, if the big playlists had as big of an impact as people make them out to be sometimes then I Miss You & Let You Down would’ve gone #1 weeks ago. Drake has always been a big streaming artist because his genre is streaming dominant (not manipulated) and because his main demographic are people aged say 14-25 who are the majority of Spotify users. One Dance lasted 15 weeks at #1 and no one in their right mind can say that that was all due to being on the top of Hot Hits for all that time.
January 22, 20188 yr Personally I'd never use playlists, because for me they undermine the whole purpose of streaming - choosing the songs *you* want to listen to.
January 22, 20188 yr Personally I'd never use playlists, because for me they undermine the whole purpose of streaming - choosing the songs *you* want to listen to. Exactly! I have my A List on my spotify which I update every week of about 30 current tracks!

I see it the other way around, NF/Clean Bandit would never had been so big if it weren't for hot hits it doesn't guarantee you a #1 or even a hit, but sure it helps

OTOH, look at the Christmas chart and the following week's chart. Do you really think hundreds of thousands of people were actively seeking out Andy Williams to stream?
January 22, 20188 yr Exactly! I have my A List on my spotify which I update every week of about 30 current tracks! Yeah, same. I'm actually surprised more people don't do this.
January 22, 20188 yr OTOH, look at the Christmas chart and the following week's chart. Do you really think hundreds of thousands of people were actively seeking out Andy Williams to stream? Well clearly not but people were still listening to him. I think with Christmas even if there weren't Spotify curated playlists we'd get the same songs popping in the chart just due to their popularity.
January 22, 20188 yr She's 50 this year which is also why her album is called Golden Whoops my bad I googled and it was Danni minogues age
January 22, 20188 yr playlists aren't everything. Lil Uzi Vert had one of the longest running hits of last year with no Hot Hits UK. Hailee Steinfeld recently went top 50 with no Hot Hits UK. Drake went to #1 without Hot Hits UK. it's really not 'ruining' the chart as much as you think - if it was your favourite artist reaching #1 with Payola you wouldn't be complaining :P
