"So Happy I Could Die" is such a stunning song. Like "Monster", it treads the lines between the two versions of 'The Fame' really cleverly during the hook. It definitely feels like an underrated gem in her discography, so to see it top 20 here is really pleasing!

| 17 // The Cure // other // 8.39

The latest single that Gaga has released enters at a very respectable #17. The Cure was a standalone single released after Gaga premiered it at the Coachella music festival. It was yet another change of pace for Gaga but musically and in terms of its release strategy. Musically, the song is more R&B than she's done previously and it talks of the healing power of love and music. It's a beautifully composed song, elegantly sung and melodically produced. It was also written in response to various atrocities happening around the world. Although it wasn't a huge success commercially, it did reach the top 20 of many countries and became a middling Spotify hit. It never received a proper music video (all it got was that trippy lyric video) and the song remains a positive message that didn't really need or contain the tricks and zaniness of her other releases. Another meaning of the song came from Gaga's dear friend, Sonja Durham, battling for her life and eventually losing the battle. The song had particular emotional resonance when viewed in this way. In an emotional statement, Gaga claimed that “I’m losing everyone I love” and while she never did find a cure for her friend, the song offered light and hope that her love made Sonja's dying days more complete.

Yes, the tropi-pop might be little basic by Gaga's standards, which is a criscism I often hear. (It's like an elevated Chainsmokers song I guess.) but the sentiment wins for me, as it has such a lovely and emotional uplifting message and you can really feel that on the chours.

| 16 // Diamond Heart // Joanne // 8.41

This is perhaps the biggest and best shock in this entire countdown. The song that opens Gaga's latest album and tour, has done remarkably well against classics we have loved for almost a decade. Diamond Heart is the perfect opener: it represents everything that has gone into the album, it is a song of strength and identity, it represents the journey Gaga took in the creation of the album, and it is the perfect message to the fans as they first play the album. The song also references Gaga's own personal relationship life - her engagement ring from Taylor was a heart-shaped diamond, and the song seems to represent the good and bad moments of this pairing. However it delves deeper into her psyche, even as far back as sexual assault she faced growing up and experiences of being a go-go dancer. But as the song progresses, this broken woman realises her worth and with a show of strength and triumph she is able to break free and shine bright. It's a beautifully constructed and sung song - her emotions are raw, as are her vocals. The messages of the song are multiple, intricate, subtle and revealing all at the same time. Every listen offers some new meaning, or new light and it's very worthy of its performance here. The album goes on to explore Gaga's strength and the strength of the women that have helped to shape her identity and her heart shines like a gem throughout it. Flawless diamond.

Love me some Diamond Heart. As much as I loved her earlier material at the time, I'm feeling the Joanne era much more of late.

ps apologies for the lack of comment from me Haus - I have been following it and the countdown has been fabulous so far *.*

| 15 // Heavy Metal Lover // Born This Way // 8.48

The last song to be recorded for the album, Heavy Metal Lover is an almighty anthem. Featuring intense synthesizers, the song celebrates rebellious culture and features Gaga raising hell on the streets, getting into trouble, and eventually ruling the world. Gaga has always been into her metal, rock, thrashing music and here she perfectly combined those sounds with her own pop beats and retro 90s sound. It's a rousing song that immediately makes you want to rebel and stir up a commotion and it quickly became a fan favourite for these reasons. A lover, not only of heavy metal, but music in general, Gaga is for many, the most rebellious and rule-breaking star in pop. Referencing Born This Way in the bridge, the song takes many twists and turns and slots in perfectly to the crazed, fist-thumping vibe of its parent album. A brilliant way of tearing up the rule book and spitting it back out, rewriting lessons for the young fans that idolised Gaga, the song is an anthem for those that want to party, get messy and live their lives loving their friends, sexuality and music.

  The best album tracks from Joanne and Born This Way!
Heavy Metal Lover never gets enough love so i'm glad it's done well here.
