December 1, 20186 yr hi… i'm new so idk where exactly to ask this. is there a list somewhere of what streaming services count towards the charts?
December 1, 20186 yr The decrease in singles sales from 1985 onwards happened at the same time as album sales began to increase dramatically. The more casual singles buyer (i.e. usually the older singles buyer) was moving to buying albums with only younger record buyers buying singles in great numbers. Also the success of the Now and Hits album series, where current hits were included on the album, also bit into the singles market. Madonna's most successful era (1985 - 1990) coincided with this period where singles sales dropped away dramatically. What she lost on singles sales she more than made up for on her album sales. All cassette sales of 'Hand On Your Heart' by Kylie Minogue were chart ineligible. Cassette singles were a valid chart eligible format, however at the time HOYH was released pricing rules meant that the dealer price, the price labels sold the single to shops at, was the same price as a 12" single rather than a 7" single. PWL deliberately sold the cassette at the same price as a 7" with the release exactly matching the same track listing as the 7" release. It was done to force the hand of the BPI - of whom the PWL label was not a member - to lower the dealer price for cassette singles which contained the same two tracks as the 7" on each side. Had the sales counted then Kylie would have entered the chart at number 1 and would have made chart history by becoming the first female solo artist to enter at the top. Instead it would be 5 more years before this feat was achieved (by Mariah Carey with 'Without You' in February 1994). A few weeks after HOYH was released the chart rules were changed to lower the dealer price for cassette releases which had the same track listing and running times as a 7" single. Indeed symbolised by the success of Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits!
December 8, 20186 yr Do sales from 'Do They Know It's Christmas' still go to charities? I'm pretty sure they do.
July 26, 20195 yr Do the year-end charts even take into account ACR or use the weighed streaming ratios? The 2018 year-end looked a little sus to me regarding a few #1's that got there due to ACR working in their favour. Edited July 26, 20195 yr by bifket

ACR isn't taken into account for year-end charts or total sales - all streams are counted at the SCR ratios.

Does it take into account the weighed 100:1 paid streams and 600:1 free streams ratios?? Or is it just 100:1 overall as i've heard? It feels like the OCC functions like a mysterious entity with these streaming rules LOL Edited July 26, 20195 yr by bifket

It feels like the OCC functions like a mysterious entity with these streaming rules LOL It was 100:1 for everything from when streams were introduced in 2014 until last year, when the separate paid and free ratios were introduced. Now total sales are compiled using 100:1 for paid and 600:1 for free, much like the official chart!

July 26, 20195 yr So basically weekly charts are not connected with YE chart when it comes to stream's totals? Sort of, yeah...! For a song like Senorita, which hasn't been on ACR yet, you could simply add up its weekly sales to get its YTD total. But for Someone You Loved, all of its weeks on ACR have been counted using the SCR ratios instead (which is a fairer way of doing it I'd say!)

(doesn't mean that the whole thing is reasonable in the first place)
July 29, 20195 yr Am I right in saying that I Swear by All 4 One holds the record for most consecutive weeks at No.2? It was behind Wet Wet Wet for 7 weeks in summer 1994. The Smurf Song was No2 for 6 weeks in 1978 as was I'm Too Sexy by Right Said Fred in 1992. Have I forgotten any? Edited July 29, 20195 yr by Trump2020

July 30, 20195 yr Am I right in saying that I Swear by All 4 One holds the record for most consecutive weeks at No.2? It was behind Wet Wet Wet for 7 weeks in summer 1994. The Smurf Song was No2 for 6 weeks in 1978 as was I'm Too Sexy by Right Said Fred in 1992. Have I forgotten any? Maroon 5's “Moves Like Jagger” equalled the record for most consecutive weeks at #2 for a song that peaked there in 2011. 3-3-{2}-2-2-2-2-2-2-4-5-5-9-7-8-10..
July 31, 20195 yr Has there ever been a song that has charted at every position in the Top 10? Not as far as I know. Thinking Out Loud came close (every Top 10 position except #9), while Fairytale Of New York has charted at every position in the Top 20 except #1!
July 31, 20195 yr What's the record for most new entries within the top 40? 20 in a week in 1997 (w/e 17/5) albeit one of these was a climber from #50. If you count re-entries and new entries combined, we had 28 in a week at the start of this year (w/e 10/1) when all the Xmas songs vanished!
