5th: "Shut Up and Drive" [8 votes]

 

 

Finishing in fifth place is the album's second single, "Shut Up and Drive". Released as the follow-up to Rihanna's first worldwide #1 hit "Umbrella", it's probably the most dated song on the entire album. A fun uptempo bop, it keeps with the album's electropop sound, harking back to 80s new wave. It also apparently samples New Order's classic "Blue Monday" in the chorus although I can't hear it myself. I do quite like the middle eight, especially how it builds up to the final chorus but the song's lyrics are a bit basic.

 

It was another hit around the world but didn't reach #1 on any global chart, which I think lead to the label picking multiple different songs as the third single before settling on "Hate That I Love You".
