Madonna's Top 20 biggest songs on the Official Chart

25 August 2018 | By Justin Myers

These are officially Madonna's biggest hits of all time.

There is no arguing with facts: Madonna is the most successful female chart act of all time.

Since her very first hit in 1984 (Holiday) she's notched up 71 Top 40 singles, of which 63 went Top 10, including a record-breaking 13 Number 1 hits, and has earned herself the title of Queen of Pop, and master of reinvention. Take a look at 60 incredible Madonna chart facts

Looking at Madonna's all-time Top 20, which takes into account physical sales, downloads, and streams, her oldest song to make the cut is her early signature song. Holiday, on 878,000 combined sales, was Madonna's first hit, reaching Number 6 in early 1984, and has outpeaked itself twice upon re-release – hitting Number 2 in 1985 and Number 5 in 1991.

Her most recent entry in the all-time chart is also her most recent Number 1. Justin Timberlake duet 4 Minutes, which was the first time Madonna had allowed a featured artist credit on one of her singles, hit the top in 2008, and has a tally of 597,000. Look back at Madonna's entire clutch of UK hit singles and albums

Top of the shop is Into The Groove, becoming another milestone hit for Madonna. Her first Number 1, Into The Groove was taken from Desperately Seeking Susan, which gave Madonna her first lead role in a movie, and has racked up 957,000 across physical, downloads and streaming equivalent sales.

One interesting fact about Madonna's all-time Top 20? Not one track charted lower than Number 3. Of the most famous, Like A Virgin started an unbeaten run of 36 consecutive Top 10s and has a total of 892,000, while infamous 1989 Number 1 Like A Prayer scores 792,000. And that huge disco comeback, the ABBA-sampling Hung Up, from 2005, has racked up 697,000.

As for her top ballad of all-time – it's the super-smoochy Crazy For You, which peaked at Number 2 twice, in 1985 and 1991, with 766,000.

Wow this is so interesting !!

Vogue has never been in the top 10 before and Like A Prayer continues to climb up the lost !!

Into The Groove getting even closer to that 1 million sales mark .

So many classics.

I think that makes "Like A Prayer" receiving the most streaming out of all of her songs.

Would have been even better from the OCC to have seen the streams for songs that's lower down on her biggest songs list such as "Jump", "Express Yourself", "Open Your Heart". But can't be too greedy. :)

I really wish she had a million seller, it still feels so strange that she hasn't given the huge cultural impact of her music.
Yeah I agree that she doesn't have a million seller is really bizarre as her songs have been so big! I'm guessing Into the groove will become one soon though. I also can't believe Like a prayer and vogue are not her 2 biggest sellers they are so huge and associated with Madonna the most I think.

It is a shame she never received a million seller. Unfortunately Madonna was unlucky to have some of her biggest hits released at times where sales were low ('Vogue', 'Like a Prayer', 'Hung Up'). The list looks a lot healthier with streams added and 'Into the Groove' looks likely to pass the mark in the near future (whilst its pure sales slowly crawl to 900k).

This is what her Top 12 looked like in August 2016 (without streams):

1 INTO THE GROOVE 1 1985 877,500

2 LIKE A VIRGIN 3 1984 832,200

3 CRAZY FOR YOU 2 1985/1990 781,900

4 HOLIDAY 2 1984/1985/1990 717,600

5 PAPA DON'T PREACH 1 1986 650,700

6 HUNG UP 1 2005 625,600

7 LIKE A PRAYER 1 1989 613,300

8 TRUE BLUE 1 1986 556,900

9 FROZEN 1 1998 556,000

10 BEAUTIFUL STRANGER 2 1999 534,800

11 VOGUE 1 1990 530,000

12 4 MINUTES 1 2007 507,000

Some big increases, 'Crazy for You' aside which seems to have had its sales revised or some sales have been overlooked. 'True Blue' and 'Vogue' now over 600k ('4 Minutes' is too, these sales must have been from a week or two before it was certified Platinum by the BPI).

'Frozen' was on 582k (inc. streams) as of March 2018 and 'American Pie' was on 400k (inc. streams) as of March 2017.

Someone should tweet them about CFY , that’s my fav ever song !!! (I don’t have Twitter) .

If I had to guess the top twenty, I might have got 15 or 16...but totally in the wrong order.

Biggest surprise for me is the Justin Timberlake duet, I couldn't even hum that one.

Ray of Light as 20th best seller ? I would've predicted 10th !

I thought Material Girl would be higher too.

Happy that Who's That Girl and Borderline are there.

I’m surprised frozen isn’t top10. Such a fantastic song but good to see hung up in T10.

Do we think ITG has passed a million yet ?

Surprised she has no million sellers but I'm sure that will change with time!
