Yeh love going through old MWs - used to buy them weekly until 2012 but now due to having no space I buy the Christmas charts to save for future reference!

Unpopular opinion, but the answer is NO. I miss the days when chart battles were common and many new entries arrived, not just the top 10 but the in the whole Top 40 Chart.

My favourite chart era will always be 1996-2003. One of my favs was in 1998, when Cher went to NO.1 with Believe, many new entries & Comebacks from older artists. That would NEVER happen now. :( :(

White Denim
They just released a (rather good) new record called "Performance" - definitely worth a listen.
Yes but i am finding im enjoying less and less of the new music. Sometimes i find myself trawling through 90's music to seek out songs i may have missed and often find some gems.

Me too. Found so many hip hop, garage and R&B gems from the 90s over the last few months that I haven't been paying attention to new music.

Music? Yes

Don't care about the charts anymore. 90% of the time practically the entire the top 10 seems to consist of 10 male urban acts/ rappers. No variety and all very predictable.

Late Of The Pier

Seemingly reformed just last month. Their drummer passed away a few years ago so I assumed they were done.

I have always got excited about new releases but miss the days when there were multiple releases and real challenges for the top10 and obviously no1. These days it’s a big thing if there’s 4 new entries on the chart, the freshness isn’t there and the streaming playlist dictate a very slow moving chart where the current genre on trend is this slurring rap! The only artist having any form of instant chart success have been mainly from that genre and not bonifide hits.. album tracks that plummet once the initial hype has died down. I know these are the times we live in and I can expect the old days scenarios as there isn’t the physical musical outlet but the Spotify playlist dominated chart is pretty dull one..all my own opinion naturally.

Now this is an interesting question. If you'd asked me a year or two years ago, I probably would have said no. However, I have to say this year has been the best for new albums and the release of what I think are going to be looked back on as future classics that there's been for some time.

I bought my first new Now album in well over 13 years this summer, and there's some really good stuff around at the moment. I mean as a Radio 2 boy I discover most of my new music through that nowadays, but reading things like James Masterton's Chart Watch has made me aware of and acquainted with some stuff I really love - Dennis Lloyd, Shawn Mendes, Cheat Codes and their song they did with Little Mix.

I get excited to hear new music, but sadly not many of my favourites make the Top 40 any longer. I'm not much into urban/hip hop so most of the chart isn't my thing at the moment.
or the musicals (though at least they give the chart some variety).

Well 'This Is Me' reminded me of the type of over the top sounding power ballads that were apparently big in the late 80s and early 90s so I actually liked it for the retro sound to it.

That's the problem, overwhelmingly its whatever the top playlists on Spotify put near the top of their playlists that tends to do well in the chart and what is lower down on it or off it tends to not.

This Kobbar realness tho

I tend to agree, there's plenty of good music but I feel more disconnected from the charts than I ever have  what I miss is proper BOPS. everything's so mellow these days (bar a few, the new Sigala track being an example) and tailored to Hot Hits :'(

We're missing the sort of timeless pop songs that have widespread appeal I feel. George Ezra's recent hits fit that bill but they seem few and far between compared to only a few years ago.

..I'm still able to find new songs I like, though most of it never makes the top 100, and it has started becoming more difficult to find songs to my taste.

New music - maybe

Chart music - no

I have the same feeling. :)

I still get excited to see new songs do well in the chart... but over the last 12 months the quality of chart music has declined so much it's unreal. I remember in 2016 I'd enjoy nearly everything that came out but now the only good stuff seems to be coming from 6 Music.
It's not bad now by any means. The darkest era of UK #1's was definitely fall 2012. Just look at them! I mean the best song in Nov-Dec was a ballad by One Direction :D

Chart music no but new music yes. A lot of chart stuff seems to be that sort of tuneless rap that sounds the same to my ears, there's stuff I do like but whereas before I'd know or listen to everything in the chart, the general state of music in the chart means I don't bother, I seek out artists I like or songs I've been recommended or heard good things about, instead of what's in the chart.

I still enjoy Xmas chart battles, Spice girls vs Chef (South Park), Bob the Builder vs Westlife, Michael Andrews/Gary Jules vs Darkness & Rage vs Joe Mcelderry all great weeks. In the streaming era this will decrease. I do think though one day Mariah Carey could finally get to No.1.

One thing that has not been mentioned is how music channels were beneficial for chart success. The Box (music channel) played a huge importance for a song doing well. Each Friday new videos were added to the playlist selection at least 6 weeks before release.
