07th. Drowned World/Substitute For Love = 7 votes

Welcome to Round 10 of Madonna's 'GHV2' survivor polls and seems as though we've entered into the double figures round, I've decided to do a Double Elimination round to speed things up a bit and to make things more interesting. However the 9th song to drop out is 'Drowned World/Substitute For Love' which received 7 votes and considering that its probably the smallest hit to feature on this collection, its lasted pretty well and also means that we finally lose one of the 'ROL' era singles. Only 3 songs in total received votes, 'Music' has started to pick up votes with 4 (it never had more than 1 in the previous rounds). Then finally 'Deeper and Deeper' gets 2 votes, a lot less than it did previously and has come close to getting booted out in several of the past rounds.

'Drowned World/Substitute For Love' - Released in August 1998 as the 3rd International single from her 7th studio album 'Ray of Light', except for the United States and was written and produced by Madonna and William Orbit, with additional songwriters including Rod McKuen, Anita Kerr and David Collins. McKuen and Kerr received the credits due to the usage of a sample from one of their songs, "Why I Follow the Tigers". Worldwide it did pretty well by becoming her 7th chart topper in Spain, while charting in the top 10 in Iceland and U.K.

'Drowned World' is a very beautiful, yet autobiographical song that introduces Madonna's more spiritual side and was not only the perfect song to open the album, but also her world tour of the same name, it really sets the tone for the calming and soothing experience of what's to come. Layered with vocal samples and buoyant drum and bass beats, the song really sums up much of Madonna's personal struggles with fame. All of which makes this a great addition to this collection of fabulous tracks, and I'd definitely say that this has earned its place.
