The Saturdays having the 3rd most entries just feels right

I’m surprised Eternals album Always and Forever is not higher. Given that it was the first girlband album to sell over 1m in the U.K. And here it’s not even top 10. Also it’s chart run always pretty amazing.

Maybe album sales were low back then in the ‘90’s.

The list definitely won’t include its sales from 1993, and unfortunately OCC decided a number of years ago to downgrade sales from 1994-1996, so Always and Forever definitely suffers from that retrospective alteration. A huge shame because Eternal were notable for that “first girl group to sell 1m albums” fact you mention. In a “best selling albums of the 90s” list it was said to have sold 1.18m copies by the end of that decade. “Spice” suffered a bit too, originally thought to have sold 3.12m. 20 years later and it’s still not quite managed to cross over 3m after around 200k was removed off its original total.

 

I’m wondering what the cut off point is for the list, whether it is from the beginning of 1994 or if it’s midway through that year.

If any of you feel inclined to tweet or Facebook OCC to inform them that Sound of the Underground (Girls Aloud) and Three (Sugababes) are missing, that would be helpful. They’ve still not noticed.

It should be sales from 1 February 1994 as that was the date that Millward Brown took over compiling the chart (from Gallup). The OCC only hold comprehensive sales data from that date.

It's a really interesting list I have to say. I've always viewed Little Mix as having very similar success to Girls Aloud and Sugbabes UK wise, however this list makes them appear to be tons bigger than GA or Sugababes ever were. That's my issue with streaming.

Are girls aloud highest then on greatest hits releases?

The lack of ‘Eternal’ output in the list is infuriating!

 

Between 1993-1997 they had such classic discography. Much better than a lot of the spice girls singles.

 

Also I think they were the first girlband in Britain to have million selling album. Easily one of Britain’s best girlbands, and very often criminally overlooked and forgotten.

I mean it has some great tracks but as an album it no way compares to Chemistry, Tangled Up and What Will The Neighbours Say!?

and what was at the time a pretty huge number one by Shakespears Sister (though I was shocked the other week when I found out my friends, aged 30 and 33, had never heard of the song!!).

 

Don't forget this list is based on sales/streams since 1994. "Stay" was out in 1992, add in its original sales and it would be around #21 on this list.

3 weeks ago they revealed that Spice Girls - Holler / Let Love Lead the Way (#92 in the list) has sold 287,000, so that can give you a more accurate estimation for Shakespears Sister!
