RTF was her first solo hit and was the single before KYD. I *think* Energy was the debut single elsewhere in the world though, so maybe it wasn't a "re-release" and that we just got Energy as the third single?

Ah yes. That was it. Such a good remix  It elevated it so much.

I just need new Keri :(

how did Turnin Me On do in the UK? that was one of my faves from her

Also didn’t chart here!

Other US Top 10 hits I can think of that didn't make it big in the UK include DaBaby's Suge (that might happen later this year), Shop Boyz' Party Like A Rockstar, Lady Antebellum's Just A Kiss, Drake's Best I Ever Had and Maxwell's Fortunate.

'Suge' has been in and out of the top 200 on Spotify for a while, I think it's probably past the point where it's likely to take off, a shame that it didn't get as big as 'Ransom' or even 'Pop Out'.

'Best I Ever Had' never even making the top 100 here is a bit of a weird one as well, of course he started impacting here with his second US top 10 hit ('Forever') but you'd think 'Best I Ever Had' would at least have been a minor hit here considering it was still his biggest hit in the US right up until 'Hotline Bling'/'One Dance'.

What a great idea for a thread. I thought about doing a similar thread.

Some great examples. Friends forever and is passion would have been massive here. I am always surprised some songs are never pushed here. I've always wondered why? Or even why Ireland get them and we don't.

How about daddy dj? Massive euro hit in 2001

Also aicha by outlandish. Big hit in 2003 and thought it had lots of potential here.

I also why uk labels don't cover euro songs more. For example no angels had some big pop songs and whilst they were geared to the German market some of their songs could have easily been covered by a UK group.

Break my stride by unique ii is one of my fav songs. I still can't believe it wasn't pushed here. In 1997 it would have easily gone top 3 in my opinion

Oh, definitely. I think it would have too. It was a real missed opportunity! I wonder why it (and the Gigi d'Agostino songs) was pushed in Ireland but not in the UK.

Love this, the Canon sample is so overused in pop music (C U When U Get There, Go West, All Together Now, that N-Dubz song - We Dance On?), but I'm sure this would have been a big top 10 in the UK. As far as I'm aware it had no release or any sort of push here. I thought I'd read somewhere that the songwriters of Atomic Kitten's Whole Again loved this song and tapped into its general vibe/tempo when writing that.

Yeah, that sample has been used a lot, but it just sounds so poignant and fits in so well on Friends Forever. I agree, definitely top 10, possibly top 5 if it had been released around graduation season. I think it was pushed in Ireland as I *think* I read somewhere that Vitamin C herself has Irish links (not sure how true that is - but her surname is Fitzpatrick so this could well be true!)

That's really interesting about it inspiring Whole Again - I never knew that! The timeline definitely fits.

Oh, I've just thought of two more examples:

"Break My Stride" by Unique II from 1997. It was a dance-pop cover of Matthew Wilder's 80s song, and got a lot of TV and radio airplay in Ireland. It made no1 in Austria and New Zealand and no2 in Australia according to Wikipedia, and made the top 10 in Ireland (no9, thanks irishcharts.ie!) It never made the UK charts though. It's a nice boppy catchy version - I didn't realise at the time that it was a cover but it still sounds good and brings back memories to me!

Another one - "Friends Forever" by Vitamin C. According to Wikipedia, it got to no2 in Australia and no4 over here in Ireland, top 30 in five countries and made it to 38 in the US. It was really big over here in Ireland in the year 2000 - it seemed to be all over the TV and radio and my sister's year used it as their high school graduation song and sung it at their school-leaving ceremony, along with almost pretty much every graduating class in Ireland in the year 2000! It's a really nice song and you've just got to love the classical music sample in it too. It never made the UK charts though I think it was never actually released in the UK.

Vitamin C tried to break jnto the UK! She started with About Last Night, but it flopped! So she never bothered releasing her main anthem.

What It Feels Like For A Girl? I don't think it did, a #7 peak for the final single is pretty good and it performed better than in most countries. It's surprising that Take A Bow broke her top 10 streak though since it was technically her biggest hit in the US and (according to Wikipedia) outsold the #4 and #8 peaking Bedtime Stories and Human Nature!

Omg I thought it peaked at like 22 or something

Oh, I didn't know that. That was a shame! Never heard "About Last Night" before - just YouTubed it and it sounds good.

I have one more example - "Lemon Tree" by Fools Garden, a song which I love! It didn't exactly flop but its UK position of 26 was so much lower compared to other countries.

It was no1 in Germany, Austria, here in Ireland (where it was all over the TV and radio), Norway and Sweden according to Wikipedia and it went top ten in 13 countries.

Not really a flop but I was surprised to find out Divinyls' amazingly-titled 'I Touch Myself' *only* peaked at #10

Fergie - Fergalicious (#105 in the UK)

Fergie - Clumsy (#62 in the UK)

Stromae - Papaoutai (DNC in the UK)

So many good shout outs here. We should make a playlist.

Yet it's gone on to become her most recognised song! I believe it didn't receive a physical release here and was therefore chart ineligible until the start of 2007 when songs could chart just on the strength of downloads. Same thing happened to 'Wait a Minute' by Pussycat Dolls, although this wasn't quite the global hit.

Bryan Adams' 'Heaven' was a Billboard #1 and 'Summer of 69' reached #5, yet only #38 and #42 in the UK respectively. Dolly Parton's '9 to 5' was also a Billboard #1, but only #47 here!

Mel C's First Day of my Life was a huge hit around Europe and hit #1 in several countries. It never even got a UK release despite this being her biggest market!
Speaking of JLo, why do I know Let’s Get Loud when it apparently wasn’t released here!? I always assumed it peaked at #5 or something

No way! I remember seeing it on music channels quite a lot

Let's get Loud was a single in many countries but not UK or US

but its a great track, one of the highlights of her debut, she should totally have released it, think its a Gloria Estefan-penned song

How many UK artists have a huge US hit and then don't even bother releasing it in the UK — a place where they actually need a hit?

Wow can't believe I've never heard this before, it's fab!

Genuinely shocked that 9-5 didn't even reach top 40 here! :o
