OMG they had a referendum in 2014 and voted to stay part of the UK. One a generation is fair enough, in say 10-15 years time. They won't get one under Boris.

There has and will be massive constitutional change since then though so they have a right to have another referendum if they want.

And I heard from people in Scotland that so many have changed their minds and the movement is MASSIVE, bigger than ever. We said another tory government alone would kill off the uk, let alone brexshit. It's over. England will be a lone one party state surrounded by eu members, just as buzzjack predicted years ago. You won't even have freedom of movement to travel to Scotland!!!

Uh oh. Brexshit is just shy of costing as much as our 47 years of EU contributions in total!! Let's put that on a bus x

Anecdotally it is true that there seems to have been a shift in opinion on Scottish independence. However, the polls still suggest a majority against. That said, I suspect there will be another referendum within two years or so. If (as currently seems likely) the SNP and Greens win a majority of the vote in the Scottish Parliament election next year, it will be much harder for the UK government to refuse permission for a vote.
Yes, let's close our eyes to the problem, that'll fix it!!!

Yes, they had one. Under the impression that they would stay in the EU (cause Spain and the UK would defo veto an application to join the EU by scotland). Now that the UK is leaving, Scotland should at least get the chance to decide their own faith

Polls still suggest that they'd vote again to stay part of the UK. It's just an obsession of Sturgeon and the main policy of the SNP. I doubt many ordinary Scots really care.

It'll be quite easy for Boris to refuse and I'm sure he will.

It’s so much nicer going through this thread, having finally put people on ignore

Don't you wonder if you're missing something interesting though? :D

It's not up to Bojo the American to decide. It's up to the people of Scotland. If this is a supposed union of equals, then they should be able to call a referendum. They only stayed in because they were told leaving meant leaving the EU. Now that is LITERALLY the opposite, it's time for a second vote.

Aaand I wouldn't trust those polls. The establishment really are hellbent on keeping Scotland in. The BBTory was vile during the referendum. The first set of polls had In winning by so much that Cameron thought it was going to be a walk in the park. By the end, he RUSHED up, as unwelcome as he is in the north, to Scotland as the polls suggested it might leave!! The SNP have history and fact on their side and campaign well. The incompetent English Tories have neither and do NOT campaign well. They are just covered by their press pals, and those pals have FAR less influence in Scotland. It's over.

Scotland WILL go independent in this decade - whether it is sooner or later in the 2020s is irrelevant, the main take home point is that the UK is over, and I'd argue that the Conservatives refusing to hold a referendum will only strengthen support for independence, particularly as the reality of Brexit on the economy becomes increasingly apparent. The death knell for the union was sounded when Boris Johnson got a huge majority.

I wouldn't go to Scotland in a million years. I don't like the cold.

I would never put anyone on ignore, even Michael. I believe all views and opinions should be heard.

That is an I'm alright, Jack mentality. It encapsulates the thought process of a vast majority of tories.

Are those the same polls that predicted a Theresa May majority?

Can I just remind Chris of the forum rules about not trolling?

If the snp get a majority in the assembly elections in the next 12 months then the pressure will be huge and the choice will not be the PMs to make potentially(although it's ridiculous that the Scottish, Irish & Welsh are at the whim of the British pm to play out their democratic right).

No matter the result, the UK won't be a federation. The PM can still say no in 2021 and there's not really much we can do about it sadly.

In which case, I'm very afraid that we end up in an extremely hostile Catalonia-style situation which benefits precisely no-one.

P.S., unlike in Scotland, there's an established, legally defined mechanism for an Irish border poll, isn't there?
