didn't know the CIN compilation apparently counts towards the album chart? okay then

good sales for Michael Kiwanuka so far, looking to manage a bit more than Love+Hate, also Super Furry Animals re-entering *.*

Very boring album chart for me this week, not keen on much of the new entries although im really disappointed that Gold by M People isnt doing far better, i thought that could have been a shoe in for top 20.
I am seething that the Children In Need album is allowed here. Are Jeff Lynne's ELO going to be held off the no.1 position by a various artists compilation?
I hope Jeff Wayne's ELO make it to #1 in the albums by Friday.

Same here

It's Jeff Lynne. Jeff Wayne is the one who did the War Of The Worlds album.

oops, my bad, I was nearly there though :P

makes no sense to allow the CNN album into the album charts, it's totally a various artists album

iTunes actually does credit it as "various artists"

if they allow this, then they can allow anything

Guessing the CIN album is charting here because the 'artist' is credited as "BBC Children In Need/BBC Co".

'BBC CO' is referring to the BBC Concert Orchestra, it looks like the OCC have done some mental gymnastics to allow this to chart because of them being present throughout the album despite not actually being credited on any of the songs (they are mentioned on the cover art though). Seems pretty tenuous but there you go... poor brave ELO coming to be denied a #1 album by something that should blatantly be counted as a compilation.

Michael Kiwanuka's sales are higher than I expected, looks like he'll comfortably beat the opening sales of his last album even though he won't get the #1 this time!

HAIM scraping another midweek position in the 90s :cheer: (thought this one might be a little higher than this but ah well). Also cool to see Underworld in the top 40 albums at the moment though they obviously won't hold onto that.

Given the nature of the CIN album and the fact that it is a new bunch of artists covering a collection of songs it wouldn’t seem right to be counted as a compilation as such? Fair enough if it was just the original tracks shoved on a single disc with nothing new to add but it’s not it’s a specific event/concept

Same logic could be applied to the Dreamville / The Plug compilations that got thrown off the chart (after initially appearing in the midweeks) earlier in the year. It's not meant to be about the songs being new / for a specific event, it's meant to be that it counts if a single artist is present on all or nearly all of the tracks, which is why it's always confused me why movie soundtracks are considered an exception even when they don't meet that criteria.

there have always been albums like this one with a bunch of covers and they've never been allowed into the album charts, always to the compilations

I can sorta understand the Cast albums, if it's the actors involved in a movie also singing the songs, but this I don't get

What was the last charity album to get to #1, Gary Barlow's Sing?

Probably was, because most charity albums are multi-artist efforts.

I still remember the controversy when the Help! charity album wasn't included in the main chart in 1995.
