Commentary

 

UK garage once again made an unexpected comeback and unlike that Craig David song from a few years ago this actually makes my Hottest 100. It is also the highest track from a UK rapper this year so well done to him. He really suits this type of beat and this felt very fresh in the chart this year. Sadly this has been a bit of a one-off from him so far and he is still yet to follow this up in my chart.

Commentary

 

One of the most amazing dance songs ever, I like to think that is why this song was a hit. It uses the same sample that Flo Rida uses in "Good Feeling" from Etta James (who sadly died recently) Avicii's production in this song is epic and flawless - I won't hear a bad word against it, it's also been loved enough in 2012 to enter that EOY chart too. It currently has over 230 plays on iTunes, only beaten by an EOY #1 contender. This song would probably be much higher if it wasn't out in the last few months of the year.

Avicii is at #42 with 2011 hit "Levels" which continued to be a hit in the new year, after finishing at #8 last year. For me it is the best song that has come from 2011, even better than my EOY #1 "Party Rock Anthem".

What more can I say about this? It's quite simply my favourite song ever by quite some distance, and following the worst possible news of the year that Avicii had passed away this shot back up to #1 for its overall 7th week. In his short career he quickly racked up an outstanding discography, and a Thermo's hot hits chart history that no other artist has come close to matching, but never quite managed to top this. The song for me is a timeless classic and after 7 years and 400 plays later it's still a banger and amazing to listen to.

And here it is again... wasn't expecting it to actually make it from mostly spot plays throughout the year (and a brief New Year's boost into the top 20) but if any song is deserving of making my Hottest 100 four times it's this. With its total sales now exceeding 5 million it's very unlikely that any other song will ever beat it. And with the EOD effect coming soon it could even be here again next year.

Commentary

 

Now we get to the other song of the countdown based on 'Good Life', this time with Inner City receiving an actual credit. It's been a great year for Armin with a 28-track album released, this being one of the singles released in the lead-in. It's a departure from Armin's usual trance sound but he can do a great dancepop track on occasion like this one here. He does a bit more with the sample than M-22 and it's got a great hook.

A rare alternative pop hit but a very welcome one, this sounded very unique in the chart too. Took some time to peak here but it eventually got to me. I'm still yet to hear anything else of his so far however.

Don Diablo finally gets an entry in the Hottest 100, and in fact he gets 2 of them. He's one of the best of the big dance producers of the moment, with him specialising in future house. This track also unexpectedly brought Kiiara back into my chart removing her one hit wonder status, although her voice is very processed here.

Commentary

 

...and here he is again, coincidentally with the exact same amount of "chart sales" as his last entry although this is still charting now which breaks that tie. This one takes the melody of 'The Way It Is', a great 80s track that I'm now trying to learn on piano because of this version, and flips it into an upbeat house anthem. I always like a piano riff in a dance track and one this iconic was always going to result in a big hit in my chart.

One of my BJSC entries this year which did well, it's an emotional trance track with Christina putting in a brilliant performance. She's one of the best trance vocalists for me. Although her previous collab with Richard Durand surprisingly made no chart impact (despite being voted #1 in ASOT for the year) they clearly still had it in them to make a #1 for me, in their follow-up. It reminds me of classic trance tracks with its big melodic synths which I love. Durand is clearly someone who's had many years doing trance though he's passed me by until recently. He has another track still in the running in this countdown too although I much prefer this however it's only had 10 weeks to rack up sales.

Commentary

 

Another Armin track, this time in collaboration with Lucas & Steve, which seems like an unlikely collab but Armin's commercial side fits them well. It's a fairly basic dancepop track but it's got a good tempo and nice vocal, it's the sort of thing I can still bop to.

Commentary

 

Techno producer I_o came on my radar earlier this year with this track, which subsequently grew on me following its BJSC appearance. Although this is a bit more accessible than his usual sound and isn't really techno, no doubt in part due to Tommy Trash (who I hadn't been following for many years, check the chart history!) and it being a vocal track. It's still a fairly unique track however and I can see why he has deadmau5's backing.

I seem to have had it in my head that Don Diablo hadn't released anything until 'Congratulations' a few weeks back but apparently not :lol: actually ignore that, You're Not Alone charted in my Top 40 this year but I completely forgot it existed until I've just played it now, Never Change is nice enough but it would probably have gone low Top 100 at best.

Let Me Go was another brilliant BJSC track, it didn't stick around as long in my chart as I expected it to but still a great dance track!

Options, on the other hand, is one of my favourite tunes of the year. So catchy and I love the beat. I did also quite like their follow-up (OT Bop) but it was certainty not to the same quality as Options.

 

Vossi Bop was a solid comeback for Stormzy but there's a few on the album that I prefer.

yes it was good to see something a bit different from one of the big UK rappers.

Congratulations is now charting high for me and could make it in next year, he is rather consistent at releasing new music anyhow.

Sonny Fodera gets a third consecutive Hottest 100 appearance although he's far from the top 40 this time. 'Into You' however is still a great track of his, combining the deep house groove that Sonny does best with a lovely vocal from Sinead.

Commentary

 

Mark Sixma is primarily a trance producer but for this track he took a more commercial approach giving us a banger that really sounds like it belongs in 2012 but is a tune nonetheless. It's got a great vocal and melodic drop, sometimes that's all you need.

The first of Calvin's 4 entries here comes from a collab with Benny Blanco where for once we got to hear his own vocal again! I'm honestly not sure what Benny provides to the track as it sounds very Calvin, but there we go. Was great to hear this even if it's not as strong as Calvin's other recent singles.

And from Calvin we go to Avicii, how typical of a Thermo's hot hits chart. Anyway..

This track was the closer on the album 'Tim' and one of the most emotional on there too, with lyrics written almost as if Tim knew what would happen in April 2018. :(

I was very pleased to read that Noonie Bao would be featuring on the track anyhow as she was also the singer in 'I Could Be The One', and she gave a beautiful vocal here. This track is also notable for being one of Avicii's fastest songs at 136 BPM but it works for the string heavy drop.

The song's gone back in my top 10 since the end of the cut-off too, so it really should be a few places higher here.

Commentary

 

A proper house tune wasn't what I was expecting from Crazy Cousinz this year but that's exactly what they delivered on their track with Alex Mills, one of the best voices in dance music at the moment. This track is about getting over your ex and is fairly standard for that sort of thing but her vocal really sells this alongside piano stabs in the production.

Commentary

 

It was only a matter of time before the melody of 'Eurodancer' would get flipped into a modern dance track and if anyone was to do it I'm glad Alan Walker was involved, it really suits his production. Although it is K-391's song first, he's only ever made my chart in association with Alan. It's a great reworking anyhow and the vocal addition is nice enough too.

Commentary

 

On the surface this is a somewhat random inclusion, with the song being over 20 years old. However I sent it to BJSC this year finally after having it as a potential for a while which gave it a boost into my chart. It's a great bit of classic trance although substituting the grand synths with a mysterious guitar(?) lead and lush pads plus the piano stabs which come in at the song's peak.
