10. Help! (1965) / Help!

5/18 votes

Dropping out next in this Beatles survivor is 'Help!'. This single is taken from the album of the same name, which will continue to be represented in future rounds of these polls, as both 'Ticket To Ride' and 'Yesterday' feature on the same record too. Much like 'A Hard Day's Night' and 'Yellow Submarine', there's not only an album named after it but a film as well. This movie (with its rather random plot) was the follow-up film to the very successful 'A Hard Day's Night'. Back to the song, 'Help!' was of course a success and reached #1 in both the U.K. and U.S. It spent three weeks at the top here in the United Kingdom. The song was largely written by John Lennon but with assistance from Paul McCartney. Lennon has explained that the song was written about how stressful he found The Beatles' sudden meteoric rise to fame. He said that he felt 'depressed' and 'fat' and used the song as a way of opening up about it for the first time. So this single was his cry for help. He said both this and 'Strawberry Fields Forever', also personal, are the songs he felt most proud of writing. Despite the deep meaning, the song is actually quite upbeat, although this was supposedly because the fast tempo increased its commercial appeal - Lennon later regretted the tempo choice despite being proud of the lyrics. The promotional video is equally upbeat and also silly, as the members appear to be bouncing up and down on a workbench and Ringo is there with an umbrella indoors... because why not. Lennon understandably takes the lead on vocals for 'Help!' but both Paul and George can be heard as backing vocalists. Now it's time to bid farewell to 'Help!' but both 'Ticket To Ride' and 'Yesterday' could be ones to watch from the 'Help!' album in future rounds, as the former polled 0 votes to leave while the latter only received one. Stick with the results to watch the top 10 unfold!

I really like 'Help!' and the remaining songs from the same record. I think the album is my third favourite of theirs only behind 'Revolver' and 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band'. I feel like 'Rubber Soul' onwards is what they're most praised for, so 'Help!' definitely feels a bit underrated as an album.

Went for 'Let It Be' again

How strange that the 2 songs involved in the 3 way tie-breaker both survived the next round and Help comes out of nowhere. That would have been on my radar soon so its position is about right.
Had to think pretty hard about what to vote for now... going for 'Day Tripper' based primarily on the fact it's probably just the one I've heard the least.

Scrambled eggs, oh how I love my scrambled eggs.

Yesterday not so great with the original lyrics eh?
