Kind of want Johnson to stay on for a bit though, this 'death by a thousand cuts' process is giving me so much schadenfreude at the moment. Plus it's kind of trashing the Conservative brand, which is long overdue.

Eeexactly! Get radical Starmer OUT!!

Can't honestly see that happening until after the next election now Michael which is welcome news to me.

I think every party leader deserves to fight at least one election. Even IDS should have.

He knows it, he's just winding everyone up. As if Labour are going to get rid of Starmer the moment he gets elected (if that happens). I agree with Doctor Blind, it will be fun to see Johnson in power against at odds with the Conversative Party. I think the by-election next week will be key.

Starmer is playing sensible politics at the moment, whether it works longer term who knows. I've no doubt the Tories will bounce back in the polls.

If the Tories dump Johnson, one of the lines of attack at the next election will be that the last three elections will have been won by a Tory leader who was dumped by the party before the next election, i.e., “Vote X, get who knows?”. If Labour win, dumping Starmer would be incredibly stupid.

Corbyn played sensible politics. Neoliberal centrist politics are notr sensible.

That's massive - I think the pressure on Johnson is going to be huge from here on in. The longer he stays in power, the better right now. I'd love to see who the first in the Cabinet to break rank will be.

I didn't mean they'd get rid of him after winning. I mean they will if they lose.

It depends how much they lost by whether they would get rid of him, I suspect it would be more likely that Starmer resigns. Either way it's all a moot point currently, as this is a great place for Labour to be in right now. I don't even think they need to do much, they just need to save face as a Party and not have their own gaffs.

Johnson's quite lucky that this is an ultra safe seat.

Poll change from GE

-11.6 Con

+8.9 Lab

51.1 to 31.0 would be the expected votes if even the worst of these opinion polls are right. Obviously by-elections are never that predictable with all the extra candidates and low turnouts but any less than 50% of the vote has to be the beginning of the end for Boris as PM.

If you are referring to North Shropshire, Labour have no chance of winning. The Lib Dems, OTOH, have a very good chance.

Local tactical voting being organised? Even with it overturning the existing majority seems unlikely for anyone.

I know Labour have no chance my post was pointing thar out. I'd be amazed if the Lib Dems managed to win it, they were distant third to Labour in 2019. The Tories are in a bad state but surely not that bad?

Just read the polling reports. Blimey - this is political realigning level stuff. Could the next election be fought between Lib Dems and Labour?

In fairness, Lib Dems did overturn the massive majority (29%) in Chesham and Amersham and the view of the government is even worse now than it was when that by-election took place. It will probably be close - a 40% majority is a mountain to climb!

Unlikely this would be translated into any general election - by election produce these quirky results as parties like the Lib Dems have the resources to pour into a single seat like this which they wouldn't be able to if they were fighting a general election and having to spread resources across various seats.

Anything under 40% isn’t a stable lead imo!

What do you mean? A stable lead isn't defined by % but by how long it is maintained. Unless you mean a safe majority?

Cons have come down quite a bit from their peak at ~44-45% earlier this year.

40% is normally considered the point at which any government needs to show they are winning the narrative imo, the fact the tories are below that shows people have lost faith but with the Labour Party still not quite there shows people aren’t yet convinced on them imo!
