Home Secretary Priti Patel met with Harry Dunn's father today at his lawyer's house. She arrived with by her close protection officers at the Nottingham house with local MP Andrea Leadsom to explain that the Home Office are starting extradition proceedings. This is done via the UK Embassy in Washington to the US State Department. Harry's mother was not present. As she left Patel hugged Mr Dunn.

US lawyer Amy Jeffress has again said her client will refuse to travel to the UK voluntarily and they will "vigorously oppose" extradition.

 

 

A statement from Amy Jeffress, Mrs Sacoolas's lawyer, said she had "co-operated fully with the investigation and accepted responsibility".

 

It added: "This was an accident, and a criminal prosecution with a potential penalty of 14 years' imprisonment is simply not a proportionate response. That is what we hope will prevent the extradition process."

 

"We have been in contact with the UK authorities about ways in which Anne could assist with preventing accidents like this from happening in the future, as well as her desire to honour Harry's memory.

 

"We will continue that dialogue in an effort to move forward from this terrible tragedy."

Sacoolas’s lawyers are deliberately muddying the waters. They are trying to give the impression that she would be likely to receive a sentence close to the maximum. That is, of course, nonsense.

Yes we all agree but her lawyers don't. Mark my words, she'll never ever set foot on English soil again. The US and Trump will block her extradition. Wouldn't look good in re-election year to see the wife of a serving US person with diplomatic immunity extradited to face a manslaughter charge.

 

Apparently she wants to "ensure this doesn't happen again". :rolleyes: As an MP Tweeted, how exactly from afar will she do that? Also, she'll honour the lad's memory. How, by sending flowers by Interflora, as she's reported to have done already. :rolleyes:

She and her pompous US lawyers seem to think an accident means she's totally innocent of any blame and crime though. She was on the wrong side of the road but it's still manslaughter.

Boris has apparently said on a TV programme that it's very unlikely the family will get justice. :( He must mean that she won't be brought back here. I didn't see it but read it elsewhere and don't know what the programme was that he was on.

 

Wonder if Trump's told him privately that they won't allow her to be extradited. Not much we can do if they won't.

 

Reports that service men and women and spouses are still seen driving on the wrong side of the road near the same air-base. Boris says he'll speak to the US Secretary Of State about it.

The US will not extradite one of their own citizens. The woman has connections, this would be brushed under the carpet in the US and it is precisely because it would go to a criminal conviction here that she will not return.

 

Shame we just lost a few powerful arrest warrants and other helpful allies that could have detained her the second she stepped foot in an entire continent.

His mother must be hoping there's a change in administration in January as she told Sky News "maybe we'll have better luck with the next President"

Well surprise surprise, the US has refused to extradite her back to the UK. :rolleyes:

 

The family's MP, Andrea Leadsom, will meet the US Ambassador to discuss the case later.

 

 

Family spokesman, solicitor Radd Seiger said "no reason" was given by US Secretary Of State Mike Pompeo in rejecting the extradition request.

 

"It's one of the darkest days in the history of this special relationship," he said.

 

"Boris Johnson wanted to be prime minister, he is now being tested severely.

 

"I expect him today to rise to that challenge and come and meet with me and the family and tell us what he's going to do about it."

Speaking after a meeting this afternoon with Business Secretary Andrea Leadsom, their local MP, Charlotte Charles said: "She will come back, I don't care how long it takes, our fight for justice for Harry will not waiver our determination, if anything, it is stronger now than it was before, if it's even possible."

 

She added: "She has to come back, I don't even know how she can live with herself and carry on with her life and drive."

 

"I don't understand that, she must be made of different stuff. But she has to come back one way or another," she said.

 

Her comments comes after the US secretary of state refused an extradition request, for the suspect charged with causing the death of the teenage motorcyclist by dangerous driving.

 

US legal experts say the family's only hope now, despite their determination, is a change of administration in January. If Trump's re-elected there's virtually no chance that she'll ever set foot on UK soil again.

If only there was some organisation we could join that meant we could have her arrested if she set foot in one of more than two dozen other member states. Let's hope her conscience is not, though!

Harry's family say that if she returns voluntarily then they'll press for death by careless driving instead of dangerous driving or manslaughter, as it carries a lighter sentence. Also ask for a suspended sentence so that she's not taken away from her children. So they're willing to be more than fair with her.

 

 

Extradition requests are usually decided in the US by a court but this never reached any court. The State Dept. just decided itself to refuse the extradition request but gave no reason.

If she was just a normal person from America visiting someone here on holiday and this happened would it be easier to get a conviction.

 

Like is it because she’s a diplomat it’s difficult or is it because she’s not from this country?

 

I’ve been following this story and I feel so much for the family of Harry it’s shocking.

Yes definitely. There's even confusion as to whether she did in fact have diplomatic immunity. Her husband certainly did but spouses don't usually. However she told police she had it and the Home Office confirmed to them that she had so they let her go. Maybe they were mistaken or were leaned on by the Americans to say she had it. Andrea Leadsom wants an investigation in to this. She didn't tell police she was going home though and they left quickly.

I thought it had been accepted that she didn't have diplomatic immunity but, of course, she was safely back home by then.

 

A British diplomat was arrested in Iran recently. He had been attending an event paying respects to people killed when the Ukrainian aircraft was shot down. When the event turned into an anti-regime protest, he was arrested. He was released when he claimed diplomatic immunity. That is exactly what the rules are for - they are meant to allow diplomats to do their job without undue interference from the host government. They are not designed to allow people to get away with serious motoring offences or, for that matter, avoid the London congestion charge or parking fines.

Well that was said but now the State Dept. is saying she IS protected by diplomatic immunity. :rolleyes:

 

They say the US owes millions in London parking charges and the CC. They don't care as they know it'll never get paid. Others countries too but the US owes the most by far. My wife said "well don't they send the Embassy bills?" I said "yes of course they do but they just don't pay them"
