I'll take anything but Mariah at number 1. I find Mariah incredibly sad these days, basically a parody of herself. I'm sure deep down she wishes she didn't have to flog AIWFC to within an inch of its life to have any relevance anymore but nobody is checking for anything else from her. It is all a bit sad.

Her peak years in terms of music are well gone, the last big era was in 2004-06.

In fairness she doesn't really have to promote AIWFCIY it takes off itself due to Radio and playlisting.

The same is pretty much true of all the xmas classics :P

But most of those artists just enjoy that they get the coins and airplay at Christmas they don't desperately try and stay relevant from it. Mariah has released a vinyl that wont be delivered for 4 months, it stinks of desperation. The really sad thing is no one will be checking her next new single whether AIWFCIY goes to number 1 or not.

In all fairness, Mariah was 152 copies away from #1 last year. Why would you NOT want to pull out the stops for #1 this year when you know how close you were? It also ties in with the 25 year anniversary, so all of these new physicals and this extra special promotion makes perfect sense. It's not desperation, it's taking advantage of an opportunity to send a classic song, that would be top 5 every year even if she didn't promote it, and send it to a historic new peak.

Also, Mariah is not the first to release physicals this year that won't be delivered for several months. Shawn Mendes, Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, etc have all done it, it's a tactic to secure the Hot 100 #1 mostly (some more successful than others).

Of course it's a shame that Mariah's new material isn't catching on, but radio won't play her new material anyway (a shame when GTFO, in a clean version, would've been her most radio friendly track since #Beautiful). However, AIWFCIY would be bigger than any of her new material regardless of her promotion because of how absolutely HUGE it is. Besides, as vidcapper correctly mentioned, this is the same for most artists behind the Christmas classics. How many are still actively releasing popular music? Of those in the top 40, it's just Ariana Grande and Sia (and Bublé in terms of albums).

Ultimately, Mariah and her team have spotted an opportunity. They're taking full advantage of said opportunity. It's outlandish to suggest it's desperate, surely any artist would do the same in her spot?

It was indeed certainly considered desperate on here when he released the Beyoncé remix of Perfect in 2017.
If It was Ed Sheeran I'm sure you would think it was desperate.

I'm literally one of Ed's biggest defenders on here so no. Nice try though lol.

Pathetic statement considering the fact that she has barely even promoted the single. In the past 25 years what has she done? Switched on Christmas lights at Westfields in 2009, had 2 concerts in 2017 and 3 in 2018. And now for it's 25 anniversary she did an advert with Walkers, one interview on This Morning, a radio 1 interview and released physical copies that are only available on her site (which are shipping now not 4 months). She's never ever performed the song live on any TV show so I don't know why you are making out she's desperate?. The song sells itself and is one of the biggest selling songs of all time but for it's anniversary she wanted to do something special. Get over it.

I'd be quite happy with Mariah making #1 but I don't think it's going to happen, Stormzy is doing too well across all platforms.
I’d prefer if Stormzy did the double. Then Ed would be the first artist since Westlife in 1999 to have four #1s in the same year. And also, I don’t want Tones going back to #1 if she goes back to SCR

Own It should have #1 pretty much unchallenged on 3 Jan.

If Tones gets a reset, it wouldn't take effect until the week after, and I doubt she'd overtake Stormzy anyway.

She’ll get an increase once the Xmas songs have cleared out which means she’ll have her 25% increase between 27 December and 2 January

Others have promoted their Xmas songs over the year again anyway.

Most recently Buble rereleased the Xmas album in 2012 and Sia did that in 2018. Also Slade, Wizzard & Greg Lake all rereleased MANY times in the 80/90s.

I’m definitely not ruling out Mariah quite yet!

2018:

07/12 - #6 - 31,203

14/12 - #5 - 31,528

21/12 - #4 - 35,896

28/12 - #2 - 65,004

2019:

06/12 - #8 - 32,389

13/12 - #6 - 34,485

20/12 - #8 - 36,781

27/12 - #? - ??,???

In theory this upcoming week is more advantageous for Christmas songs than last year:

Last year’s dates for this equivalent week: 21st/22nd/23rd/24th/25th/26th and estimated 27th

This year: 20th/21st/22nd/23rd/24th/25th and estimated 26th

As can be seen by the sales comparisons above, so far this year Mariah has had higher sales every week, even though her positions have been lower. If that trend continues she should do over 65k this week, and as mentioned, Mariah has new physicals & a new music video version released this week.

Stormzy managed 67,649 last week, helped along by the album being newly released. I shouldn’t tempt fate but isn’t it likely that he’ll decline this week?

I think it could be a very tight race, even though the “first look” chart won’t indicate that it will be. It’s still a bit too soon for the Christmas streaming impact to majorly kick in.

She doesn't perform it because she cant hit those notes anymore. Also lol at you listing more promo (don't forget a 2nd and new music video for it this year) than most songs ever get.

Team Stormzy all the way. ITV doing him a massive favour right now, they misquoted him and it is blowing up on social media #streamstormzy

You clearly haven't seen her promo appearances in the US shows recently. ¨
