January 11, 20205 yr I don't normally like to call 'sexism!!1' on these things but surely they must realise that not having a single woman between the Group and Album categories, and just one in the New Artist category, is not a good look. (In fairness I had to look hard to even find any British groups who dropped albums in 2019 and weren't all male - Ward Thomas is the only somewhat mainstream one I could come up with - but still, they couldn't have spared at least one of the AOTY nominees for Charli and/or Freya and/or twigs?)
January 11, 20205 yr Agree with Bre RE the groups, there haven't been many female groups releasing last year. Though with The xx, Wolf Alice, Pale Waves and Londom Grammar likely to return this year - at next year's awards it'll be good to see more female/female-fronted bands nominated.

Outside of the categories that are exclusively M or F. This is how much female representation they have in the other categories: Group: 0/5 New Artist: 1/5 (and she's not even new tbh, Mabel had three Top 20 hits prior to 2019 lmao) Song: 3/15 (this is just looking at the gender of the artists represented. if we look at songs with female lead credit (including joint co-credit) it's 2/10, if we just look at songs with female credit it's 3/10) Album: 0/5 Well.. I think that says it all lol. Edited January 11, 20205 yr by cantthinkofaname
January 11, 20205 yr You need to actually make valid suggestions of what female artists warranted being nominated. So far only people moaning not able to suggest females who actually deserved a nomination. Of course it be great if more females were nominated but plucking names out that don't warrant it because they are female is no better
January 11, 20205 yr I mean my post literally did suggest 3 worthy female nominees for AOTY x (and that's just from looking at the artists that they nominated for the female-specific award) I would normally be agreeing with you but the level of gender imbalance is almost comical this year.
January 11, 20205 yr Author New Artist: 1/5 (and she's not even new tbh, Mabel had three Top 20 hits prior to 2019 lmao) Yeah what's with that? I would have thought that to be considered a new artist you'd have to not have released anything prior to 2019.
January 11, 20205 yr It’s not the first time something’s been nominated twice (used to happen with albums a lot) but the Mabel thing is odd. Dido got her only nomination for newcomer revoked back in 2002 on the basis she had been nominated for best female in 2001. Since this isn’t Mabel’s first Brit nomination, she really shouldn’t be in that category.

January 11, 20205 yr Charli XCX and FKA twigs had two of the most critically lauded albums of the year but the BRITS are more interested in celebrating the big mainstream names. Ratings are falling so to keep the ceremony going they want to attract the biggest names possible to perform on the show and to do that they use the nominations as a bribe. You can pretty much guess the winners based on the acts that perform. Also, the general public aren't going to be as interested in tuning in to see Charli or twigs pick up awards as they are Lewis Capaldi or Dave. It's a shame that it's become so predictable, contrived and fake but that's the way it is.

I mean Pink won outstanding contribution last year because she agreed to perform.
January 11, 20205 yr LMAOOOOO at Ed being snubbed in the male artist category. Well technically he didn't so anything solo last year
January 11, 20205 yr Those 2 noms for Harry Styles look like he has agreed to perform at the very least.
January 11, 20205 yr This is why I am against scrapping Best Male/Best Female categories. Females singers would get virtually no recognition otherwise.
January 11, 20205 yr Nothing against harry styles but has the album even been out long enough to be considered / already nominated, havent others in the past been released too late to be considered
January 11, 20205 yr And The 1975's winner from last year's ceremony was also out in December. Right at the very very end of November :P but yeah - I wonder how the desicion is made?
