Surely the chief medical officers would be more independent? Simon Israel reporting this because the docotors are concerned the situation in the ground is a lot different to what's being reported.

Why? Because it is led by someone who lies constantly. Someone who lies so much that many people are questioning whether he really has the virus or if it's just another one of his lies.

I wish sometimes your intense hatred of Boris and belief that he's a serial liar wouldn't always cloud your replies. Okay I'll phrase it differently. What advantage would there be for them to report lower deaths and cases? The only one I can think of is to not cause mass panic. Can you think of any others.

For a man who apparently loves being PM, would he really miss being at meetings and news conferences in person? I don't think there's much doubt that he has it. He doesn't look ill at all today but many have it mildly like he has so far. Let's all hope he doesn't get any worse.

To make them look like they’re handling the situation much better than they are?

I think they're handling it very well and a poll on Friday found 70% thinking Boris is doing a great job.

There are official statistics for deaths every year, eg 601,000 died in 2018, and figures for causes too, so the true figure would come out eventually.

It's not a belief. It is a fact. He is a massive liar. He only loves being pm because it feeds his posh school boy ego and fuflifls his born to rule psychosis that he was imbibed with thanks to his family and Eton education and old boy landed gentrý privilege.

Rather than just slagging our sick PM off, do you think they may be under-reporting the figures and if so, why?

I don't know - ans that's precisely because we have a lying sack of puke shit weasel as pm. He should not be in the role. It's embarrassing that we doffed our caps to the privileged lords and ladies of the manors and let them rule.

At least with Mad May, there was a SMALL level of trust. With Bojo the Clown, there is absolutely none- and that's all on him.

Have you seen his letter to us all? Very sincere and re-assuring.

Source?

Jenny Harris from your health department. Although she was talking about UP TO instead of a definitive 6 months

She's deputy Chief Medical Officer I believe.

Can't see schools opening before September. Kids and teens will be happy. Bored but happy.

I watched that speech and they very deliberately said that’s not what they meant....

I saw her too and she said it may be up to so long but she can't know for sure now. Nobody can yet.

Important to note it was 6 months "before things go back to normal", restrictions will have to go down gradually and tbh it makes sense because you can't just say go for 2 months and then just put everything back and cases spike again. Equally we can't be like this for 6 months  I'm thinking that when numbers go down, maybe we're allowed to see family, partners and friends but we won't be going back to having festivals or big events or anything like that.

Exactly. Atm it’s being reviewed every few weeks to see the impact it’s had on the numbers. Also not everything will go back to normal straight away bc that would just cause it to spike again, so it’ll take a few weeks/months to transition back into normality

There is no doubt at all that the number of people diagnosed is a lot lower than the number of people who have contracted it. The same applies to every other country. As it is almost certain (now being acknowledged by experts rather than just speculation by people like me) that a lot of people contract it but show no symptoms at all, the real numbers are still largely guess work.

We have to hope that the quoted figures for the number of deaths are reasonably accurate.

As others have said, it is not "my belief" that Johnson is a serial liar. It is a simple fact. He has been sacked from two jobs (and two marriages) because of his lies. Only this month, his government has kept changing its story about why we are not participating in the EU scheme to buy ventilators despite being invited to do so. He lied to the queen about proroguing parliament. He lied about not wanting an election.

Yes one newspaper speculated that maybe us seeing people could be relaxed just before summer, say by June, but that schools, sport, pubs, clubs and restaurants will be last, maybe September. Tim Martin won't be happy. :P He firmly believes that pubs should have been kept open. How could they have ben if we're in lockdown? Is that bloke actually all there in the head :D

Wonder when we'll hear that Wimbledon's cancelled this year.

That's going to be a difficult process to manage. They probably need to start getting the message across now that the transition itself will take a good two to three months.

There was an interesting piece in the paper last week about Spanish flu in 1918. There was an early wave in the first part of the year and then a much worse phase later in the year. When the war ended in November, one of the virologists who had been advising the government pleaded with them to restrict the celebrations. The government ignored that advice and millions of people poured onto the streets. How much that contributed to the second wave, we can never be sure but it should be a warning to governments everywhere at this time.

An announcement on Wimbledon is expected this week. There has been some speculation that it could be held later in the year. If so, I would guess it may be with fewer players (or without some of the events such as veterans tournaments) as it will be getting dark rather earlier.
