Mel C refusing to release another group album in 1999 to focus on her shitty solo career

Firstly, her solo career is not "shitty". Your opinion is.

Secondly, she didn't "refuse to release Forever in 1999". The album simply wasn't ready, which is a simple fact that you refuse to comprehend.

Forever was the only Spice Girls album I bought, whereas for most it was the only Spice Girls album they didn't buy!!

  • Bopping to THIS BOP today

  • I find that Let Love Lead The Way could have been up there with 2 Become 1 and Goodbye if the lyrics weren't so sacarine... The melodies and production are stunning, but the lyrics could have been tak

I was working my first job when ‘Forever’ was released and put multiple copies through the till so they would register as a sale after The Sun said the album was flopping and they were being hammered by Westlife - I had a barcode at the till for ‘Forever’ so when people were buying the Westlife album I would scan the ‘Forever’ barcode as the receipt only printed CD rather than the tile they had bought

So yeah about 25 first week sales for ‘Forever’ were fake ^_^ Still one of my favourite albums and I listen to it all the time still.

*OCC coming to downgrade Forever's sales*

love this

Forever is utter TRASH.

They eneded a pop album in 1999, a dance album in 2000. They could have started solo in 2001/2.

Surely the people in the store doing a stock-take must have thought there was something amiss?

(Good work though!)

Melanie did not "throw the whole group in the bin". Victoria & Mel G (as she was known at the time) went to have their babies, so she made one of her own (in the form of Northern Star). Did you expect her to sit an entire year at home and do nothing? The best treatment to depression is to keep being busy. And that's exactly what she did.

Also, let's not forget that Mel G was keen to kickstart her own solo career. She released Word Up in the first half on 1999. If it hadn't flopped, I'm sure she would have released Hot much sooner.

This is objectively not true. Depressive people often work harder to forget about their depression (like me, I have learned this the hard way).

Firstly, her solo career is not "shitty". Your opinion is.

Nope, they had plenty after recording in 1998 and 1999 and as far as we know, they were gearing up for a release (obviously no concrete plans were put in place for the actual release, it but things were gearing up to it before they were delayed by a year). They just couldnt release it cos Mel C wanted to focus on Northern Star.

And yes, most of the over 20 years of Melanie C career has been utter drivel, like most of their solo music anyway.

Sorry guys, I'm kind of done with being kind to their solo careers, when the solo careers have been incredibly disappointing both artistically and commercially, and have inflicted major damage on the group itself. I don't care if Northern Star was good. It wasn't good enough to throw the group in the bin, like it happened.

I would love to say 'well at least she was happy during that time' but we all know she wasn't anyway. She could have easily put some stuff in place around the group's dynamics and work schedule that would allow her to have a better, healthier relationship with the girls. But whatever, it is what it is.

After 25 years of this crap, this is where I am at. Group or nothing. The rest, the solo stuff, is just some millionaires who got rich in the 90s and now profit from nostalgia only, entertaining themselves by playing pop-star cosplay. The music's middle of the road, the 'entertaining' isn't even entertaining, and the attention to quality is so low that I refuse to pay any more money for their solo adventures - or even the latest shit group-merch to be honest...

It's incredible and sad that the group that can produce music like they have done, and sell out really high-quality productions of Stadium tours, refuse to do anything in order to continue to do their meandering solo crap. I'm done...

Again, would trade all of the solo projects together for another Spice album. Even if it flopped.

They (the four girls as well as their Virgin A&R) were not satisfied with the direction of the pop tracks that were recorded with Biff & Elliott. They wanted to change direction. There wasn't enough R&B material to choose from in order to release a 10-track album in November 1999.

All their albums were released in early November. A global campaign needed to be planned several months in advance. So no, they couldn't have released an album (that they were happy with) in November 1999.

Yes, and it clearly was being set up as we know the recordings where set and the Christmas shows had been planned months ahead. But at some point during Spring/Summer 1999, Mel C put her foot down focused on Northern Star to be her main focus for the end of the year and into 2000, thus the plans for the group where delayed. This ultimately also drove the girls into the full r'n'b direction, whereas they were planning on releasing a pop/rnb mix album in 1999. This is KNOWN

I really don't know what the issue is with stating this. It's bloody obvious lol

Mel C put her foot down focused on Northern Star to be her main focus for the end of the year and into 2000,

Oh, really? Who said that? Does this claim appear in any of the girls autobiographies? Or in David Sinclair's book? I think NOT. :coffee:

No, this is you SPECULATING and stating your theories as facts, although you have no actual source to back up your claims.

The Christmas in Spiceworld Tour isn't a proof they were meant to release an album in 1999. It was just a short & local tour.

I don’t know all the ins and outs of what went on at the end of the group BUT the main thing I think is really sad is how they were such a massive phenomenon that hasn’t been seen before with a girl group, they could and did literally sell anything - I was such a huge/hardcore stan (One of the ones that would wait 15+ hours for them outside studios etc.,) and done the same for all their solo careers.

But so many false starts, speculations, half arsed attempts have dented their legacy so much - with the lack of thought, care and promotion put into their reissues for example it’s hard to believe they were really at the top of their game at one point and untouchable, I thought the SW tour would have reignited them to cement their legacy going forward but they finished the tour and aside from a few rumours they’ve seemingly dumped the Spice Girls and it’s now a side project to whatever else they are up to.

I’d rather they would have just done a final tour and put the SG to rest if they can’t decide if they want to do more tours etc.,

Anyway that’s just my little rant - from a hardcore stan that was fully invested in them and had all the merch (literally all of it) to being totally meh about the group now just as they are.

Omg this is AMAZING

Really? Not even for a Spice 1999 album? Or another Spice album today?

Don't get me wrong... Northern Star is good, but it is not even close being worth throwing the whole group in the bin (like Mel C did). Not even Free Me or Life in Mono are worth that either.

Northern Star is in my top 5 albums of all time so definitely.

1. Come on over (Shania Twain)

2. Ray of Light (Madonna)

3. Rumours (Fleetwood Mac)

4. The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust (David Bowie)

5. Northern Star (Melanie C)

(Spiceworld is also top 10 tbf):

6. 21 (Adele)

7. Spiceworld (Spice Girls)

8. Let It Be (The Beatles)

9. Heart of stone (Cher)

10. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (Elton John)

Blame Geri for the SW tour. She hss decided she is Shakespeare again!!! The EGO on her!! And she also turned down the Coronation, due to Shakespeare Spice mode. What a JOKE.

Well... this discussion made me want to try and put together everything we know about 1999, from www.spicegirlsnews.com, a fan site from the time.

I've only got as far as the end of June before running out of steam, but - I think even just these months makes it abundantly clear that it's really not all on Melanie C. Their scheduling for album recording was established quite early on in the year - three of them stated August or Summer for going back into the studio together. That did end up happening. Clearly the four of them were busy doing their own things for a lot of this year. Plus Mel B was just as busy with working on her own music as Melanie C was!

A third Spice Girls album in 1999 just wasn't on the cards...
