American Idiot is the seventh studio album by American rock band Green Day, released on September 20, 2004, by Reprise Records. Following the disappointing sales of their previous album Warning (2000), the band took a break before beginning their next album, Cigarettes and Valentines. The recording was cut short when the master tapes were stolen, and the band decided to start from scratch.

A concept album dubbed a "punk rock opera" by the band members, American Idiot follows the story of Jesus of Suburbia, a lower-middle-class American adolescent anti-hero. The album expresses the disillusionment and dissent of a generation that came of age in a period shaped by tumultuous events such as the Iraq War.

American Idiot marked a career comeback for Green Day. It charted in 27 countries, peaking at number one in 19, and sold 16 million copies worldwide. The album spawned five successful singles: "American Idiot", "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", "Holiday", "Wake Me Up When September Ends" and "Jesus of Suburbia". American Idiot was well received critically and won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 2005. Its success inspired a Broadway musical and a planned feature film adaptation. It appears in several lists of the best albums of the year and the decade. American Idiot has sold 6 million copies in the United States alone, having been certified 6x platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Let's talk about this HUGE album from Green Day! I assume it's fine for me to post this thread  This is honestly one of my absolute favourite albums of all time, if not my favourite. I would be lying if I said I didn't know all the lyrics to everything here tbh this album means so much to me on a personal level. 9 of the 13 songs here would contest in my all time favourite songs list if I ever did one ngl

When I started posting these, I wanted others to join in! And I’ve continued since the forum got mods so I’m assuming that’s still ok.

American Idiot was such a massive album, I was just about to turn 16 when it was released and it was what we were all listening to in my friendship group at the time! I’d always known Greenday’s music but they just became so massive with this album!

This was the first album of its genre I owned. The singles run though. *.* Amazing! I think I need to revisit some of these albums that have been reviewed. It's making me very nostalgic.

I for one love reading these reviews and commentaries so please keep them coming.

this album is one that I heard a lot of at the time particularly as my brother was a huge fan and my parents also liked it. I wasn't quite as big a fan as he was but it does have some great tracks on it, big standouts of the rock genre. It's been a long time since I've actually listened to this album in full though.

Jesus of Suburbia now that is how you do an epic, 9 minutes long and doesn't waste a second.

Need to revisit this album. American Idiot and Boulevard of Broken Dreams will forever be on any playlists for me.
'American Idiot' is so nostalgic for me as my dad would always play the CD in his car! I then delved into it separately on my own and bought it for my vinyl collection  honestly not a single dud on there - definitely an all-time favourite. All the singles are killer and my favourite album track is 'Letterbomb'!
This is my favourite album of all time  and I'm not even a big rock fan. I LOVE every single track!

Yes Dan complete agreed. I'd even say I slightly prefer Homecoming which shows how incredible both epics are.

'Jesus Of Suburbia' and 'Homecoming' are both such experiences, got to be one of the most successful concept albums ever.

Outside of this album Green Day don't interest me all that much, but this one is fire straight through.
