1st Green Day - American Idiot 22/33 votes (67%)

Released in September 2004, this was the title track from Green Day’s acclaimed 7th studio album. An explicitly political song, it addresses the paranoia and ignorance caused by mass media. Its #3 peak was the highest for the band at the time, later eclipsed by the U2 collaboration “The Saints Are Coming”.

2nd Oakenfold featuring Brittany Murphy - Faster Kill Pussycat 11/33 votes (33%)

Peaking at #7 in June 2006, this was the lead single from Paul Oakenfold’s album “A Lively Mind”, and to date remains his last chart hit. It’s inspired by the 1965 film “Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!” It’s the only chart appearance for late actress Brittany Murphy.

1st Emma Bunton - Maybe 19/32 votes (59%)

“Maybe” was the 2nd single from Emma’s 2003 “Free Me” album. After the title track had peaked at #5 I don’t think many people were expecting her to have any more substantial hits, but this reached #6 in October 2003 and outsold the lead single which did not make the year end Top 100. “Maybe” combines elements of ‘60s bubblegum pop and bossa nova, and the video is an Austin Powers pastiche. She went on to have 2 more Top 20 hits from the album, which also had retro styles.

2nd Destiny’s Child - Jumpin’ Jumpin’ 13/32 votes (41%)

“Jumpin’ Jumpin’” was the 4th and final single from Destiny’s Child’s 1999 album “The Writing’s On The Wall”, which included American #1s “Bills, Bills, Bills” and “Say My Name”. It reached #5 in the UK in July 2000 becoming their 5th Top 10 hit, though even bigger commercial success was around the corner for them with the “Survivor” album and its singles. “Jumpin’ Jumpin’” is an R&B-styled pop song with elements of melodic rap.

1st Jamiroquai - Little L 18/29 votes (62%)

“Little L” was the lead single from Jamiroquai’s 5th album, “A Funk Odyssey”. It reached #5 in August 2001, giving them their only Top 5 hit of this century. The lyrics were inspired by Jay Kay’s break up with Denise Van Outen.

2nd Alice Deejay - Will I Ever 11/29 votes (38%)

“Will I Ever” gave Dutch Eurodance group Alice Deejay their 3rd Top 10 hit in July 2000, all from their only album “Who Needs Guitars Anyway?” They would go on to have 2 more Top 20s before disappearing for more than a decade in 2002. However they reformed in 2014, and vocalist Judith Ann Pronk has since returned to their tours.

1st Basement Jaxx - Romeo 24/31 votes (77%)

“Romeo” was the lead single from Basement Jaxx’s 2nd album “Rooty”, and reached #6 in June 2001. It features Kele Le Roc on lead vocals and samples the 1981 disco track “Don’t Let The Rainbow Pass Me” by Cloud 1. An acoustic version was recorded in the Radio 1 Live Lounge, and in 2018 an orchestral version was recorded for the “Garage Classics” album.

2nd Gnarls Barkley - Smiley Faces 7/31 votes (23%)

Gnarls Barkley was a duo consisting of soul singer Cee-Lo Green and producer Danger Mouse. After 9 weeks at #1 “Crazy” was deleted to make way for this follow up which peaked at #10 in July 2006 and was their only other big hit. However Cee-Lo would be back in the Top 3 alongside Kelis the following year, and would top the charts in his own right a few years later.

Year End #99 results:

1st: Green Day - Boulevard Of Broken Dreams 17/32 votes (53%)

“Boulevard Of Broken Dreams” was the 2nd single from Green Day’s 7th and most successful album “American Idiot”. It reached #5 in December 2004, and thanks to its long chart run not only managed to be the 2004 year end #99 just a few places behind “American Idiot”, but was also the 2005 year end #88. Having won the #88s survivor here it placed 2nd in the #81-90 ultimate round. How will it fare in its 2nd ultimate contest?

2nd: Sugababes - About You Now 15/32 votes (47%)

“About You Now” was the lead single from the Sugababes’ 5th album “Change”, the first to feature Amelle Berrabah. It reached #1 in September 2007 and stayed there for 4 weeks, making it the longest running #1 for the Sugababes and the only time they reached a year end Top 10. As well as being the #7 of 2007 it was the #99 of 2008, but despite winning the #7 Survivor it has been pipped into 2nd place here.

Year end #100 results:

1st: Daft Punk- One More Time 30/36 votes (83%)

“One More Time” was originally composed in 1998 but shelved until it became the lead single from Daft Punk’s second album “Discovery”. The house track has an unusually long 2 minute break in the middle. It contains an uncredited sample of “More Spell On You’ from 1979 by Eddie Johns. It reached #1 in France, and in the UK reached #2 behind “Can’t Fight The Moonlight” by Leann Rimes. It reached Rolling Stone magazine’s Top 500 songs of all time.

2nd Armand Van Helden - Mymymy 6/36 votes (17%)

“Mymymy” was originally released in 2004 and then appeared on Armand’s 2005 album “Nympho”. The vocal section is sampled from a 1981 track by Gary Wright called “Comin’ Apart”. It managed to be a long running non Top 10 hit twice, with the original 2004 release reaching #15 and the re-release peaking at #12 in June 2006. Both releases reached the year end Top 200, but the later release was the more successful reaching #102.

Ultimate ultimate survivor results

1st: Eminem featuring Dido - Stan 20/34 votes (59%)

The winner of the 1,000 tracks (slightly fewer with repeats) to appear in the first 100 survivors is Eminem’s December 2000 chart topper which kickstarted Dido’s career. Funnily enough this only made it here thanks to having a long run into 2001. In the year end #6 survivor it only came 3rd behind “About You Now” and “All The Things She Said”. However after beating runner up Kylie’s “Slow” in the #74 survivor, and Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know” in the #71-80 ultimate it earned its place here.

Perhaps its victory marks something of a shift in the forum taste. Of course not all Eminem’s material is loved like this - he also recently had a landslide 1st exit in the #99 survivor with “Ass Like That”.

2nd: Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Murder On The Dancefloor 14/34 votes (41%)

The love for this has only increased over time thanks to its chart resurgence last year. However it’s another one that needed 2 bites at the cherry to get here. After defeating Kylie’s “In Your Eyes” to win the #60 survivor Kylie had her revenge, beating Sophie in the final of the ultimate with “Love At First Sight”. Sophie proceeded to win the #87 survivor against “Teenagers” by My Chemical Romance, and then defeated “Boulevard Of Broken Dreams” to win the ultimate (another track that made it here in a 2nd chance saloon).

3rd: Robyn - With Every Heartbeat 15/36 votes (42%)

Year end #101 results:

1st: Jamelia - See It In A Boy’s Eyes 17/29 votes (59%)

The piano loop on “See It In A Boy’s Eyes” was written by Chris Martin. It reached #5 in July 2004, becoming the 3rd consecutive Top 5 hit from the re-worked “Thank You” album that gave her by far her most successful era. Although she will have some more well received and performing singles she would never reach the Top 5 again.

2nd: Robbie Williams - You Know Me 12/29 votes (41%)

“You Know Me” was the second single from Robbie’s 8th album “Reality Killed The Video Star”. It charted hot on the heels of the lead single “Bodies” in late 2009, eventually peaking at #6 in Christmas week. Its 16 week run in the Top 75 was actually twice as long as “Bodies” managed. Both tracks were produced by Trevor Horn.

Year end #102 results:

1st: Florence And The Machine - Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up) 21/36 votes (58%)

This must be the first ever final featuring 2 non Top 10 hits; both #12 peakers with good runs. “Rabbit Heart” was the highest peaking single from Florence And The Machine’s debut album “Lungs” at the time, although “You’ve Got The Love” later reached #5. The lyrics are based around fear of being in the spotlight, and Florence’s vocals are overdubbed to form a choir of 1.

2nd: Fall Out Boy - Thnks Fr Th Mmrs 15/36 votes (42%)

Following their previous single “This Ain’t A Scene, It’s An Arms Race”, Island Records had asked Fall Out Boy to shorten their song titles. They responded by taking the vowels out of “Thanks For The Memories” for this title. It is one of their most streamed songs, currently with just over 800 million Spotify plays.
