I really don’t think the title would have been an issue why would anyone associate it with Diana tbh? Both albums had lazy titles in the U.K, why wasn’t the previous one called Confide In Me, that would have been much better than “Kylie Minogue.”

I find self titled albums so boring tbh, Melanie C’s last one being legit one of her best albums and self titled instead of “Who I Am” was so annoying!

I kind of felt during Intimate & Live she was starting to embrace her poppy side again for bits of it, like that was her way of symbolically drawing a line under the experimental stuff and also preparing herself for a return to all-out pop.

I think she said in an interview one time that it was the intimate and live gigs that helped make her see the fans wanted the poppier songs from the reaction of the audience to her poppier songs.

I wonder when the moment came that Kylie decided to switch lanes and go back to pop? When did she ultimately decide that the music from her Deconstruction era wasn't working out for her, and wasn't how she should continue on with her career? Would it have been in 1999, or could her thoughts about this have taken root some time in 1998?

I wonder how she ultimately felt about the decision to change her music direction, before she began recording material for Light Years - could she possibly have felt a bit defeated or even reluctant to go back to pop - or was she perhaps feeling immediately positive and motivated by this choice? After all, she could have equally decided to stick to her guns, musically. I feel like there was an element of risk for her going back to pop, just in case that didn't work out either?

I'm not sure if she's ever spoken at length about this!

I also sometimes wonder how her 90s music would have sounded if she decided to continue with a poppier sound. My guess is there would have been an electronic influence there, and maybe her mid to late 90s sound could have been a bit... Gina G-esque?

I often think this and how Kylie must have felt at the time.

I guess in terms of her ‘indie’ sound even if the album had been more successful there was no guarantee if she would continue with the sound as she had switched from the sound of K94 to IP.

I think it was probably more of a realization of what next - she had parted ways after huge success with PWL and knew that the Deconstruction venture hadn’t been a commercial success and she essentially, was going to be without a record deal which must have been difficult and regardless of what sound she ventured with next would anyone be interested.

I think the fact that she hardly refers back to the IP era shows it probably hurt her it didn’t get the response she wanted at the time, and I love the fact that she acknowledged the belated love for the album when the re-issue went Top 5.

I think in an interview I read years ago, William Baker said it was clear if Kylie wanted to continue her career, she would have to return to pop because during the Intimate and Live, the only time the audience came alive was Dancing Queen and BTDYK.

And also she is somebody who historically needs that applause and validation from the audience, as evidenced by certain choices in her set lists.

I'm sure it's hard for any act if they do a song and it gets a lukewarm reception or worse at concerts with the fan base. I think more so in the past a performance of a song at a concert could sway the choice of singles, I'm not sure if this was the case for kylie with any single choices.

Intimate and live was definitely a tour of discovery for kylie and probably one of those realisation points where she walked away knowing she had to go back to what she does best and what the fans want which was pop.

Nick Cave also played a very important role in this happening aswell and in many ways we have a lot to thank Nick Cave for.

This has come up on PopJustice and they've suggested that the way the pop culture was changing - starting with Spice Girls but particularly in 1999 when new popstars like Christina and Britney were breaking through and when Madonna and Janet were returning to pop after introspective albums - it was almost inevitable that Kylie would have done so, regardless of how 'Impossible Princess' had been received.

If she didn't go completely pop, I do think she would have homed in on the dance side of 'Impossible Princess'. Maybe acts like Sash! (they did remix 'Breathe') or ATB and that type of euro sound. The likes of 'On a Night Like This' and 'Butterfly' would probably still exist.

Thats a very good point, females were doing so well at that time although i have always thought and still do the dance side of impossible princess would still have potential to be something great.
That would follow the recent albums wonderfully and Kylie has made reference to revisiting Impossible Princess.

IP was such ahead of its time - some of it still sounds perfect today and the recent DJ remix of a track shows that it’s a sound that still works.

The remixes have worked brilliantly and shows that, that side of the album sound wise could still make a very modern new kylie album.
