No shade to the Zara forum (well done for doing excellently in this round), but I won't lie, I'm surprised by just how well received her song is!

 

I thought it was nice, I guess? It didn't stick in my mind after hearing it. It didn't strike me as being distinctive or particularly special. I'll return to it soon and see if I have a change of heart.

I only kind of knew... 3 of these songs (plus technically about 5 that I'd heard once when listening to their albums), none of which I particularly care about, and ballads are frequently not my thing, so I expected my interest in this round to be limited and my goal was just to find enough tracks at least both pleasant and non-boring.

 

As it turns out, I was quite impressed by half of these! I like the sonic diversity in the list too - a good half of the songs sound totally distinct from both each other and typical ballad templates (as opposed to if it was just, like, 15 piano ballads about love, which would... probably be a bit much in one go).

2. Kylie Minogue - Fragile -- really like this top 2, great production on both and lovely ~~vibes~~ from Kylie

3. Rihanna - Cold Case Love -- this was one of only... 2.5 songs on the album I had no familiarity with (such a stacked album). The first 4 minutes are already quite nice on their own but I really like when it explodes with the endearingly late '00s production and guitar solo

6. Spice Girls - Naked -- this is the song I was most taken aback by because it sounds so unlike any of their singles! The spoken parts + bassline felt kind of like East 17's 'Deep' or even Madonna's 'Erotica' singles to me (both comparison points I love, but also, comparing the Spice Girls to 'Erotica' is the last thing I expected), while anytime they're singing it's so distinctively them, but with said bassline giving it a totally different feel. Thanks for choosing it.

Really pleased that you found this to be an interesting track! :wub: It seems to be an acquired taste (judging by at least a couple of people placing it dead last) but I'm glad that some of you think it's good! You're very right that anyone who's only heard some Spice Girls singles probably wouldn't expect a song like this from them. I definitely hear the Erotica vibes too!

I only knew three songs coming into this round (Katy, Little Mix and Taylor - I must've heard Gaga during my watch of 'A Star is Born' but I don't have any memory of it) and tbh I felt this way about a lot of the songs that were fresh to me? The entire round was a bit of a slog to get through, but Zara was short and sweet and I really like her voice on this track so she was my favourite discovery. Nothing came close to the three I already knew and I struggled to get to the required eight songs in order to vote.

 

Thank god Zara didn't go with 'Only You', it has such an awful opening lyric that puts me off the entire song :lol:
