July 12, 20205 yr Author #9 - Jess Glynne 'Take Me Home' (Avg. 7.093) High Scores: (10 - Cameron, UltraBeKind, Calum 9 - Chapman, JosephStyles, LL Jord 7) Low Scores: (2.5 - smidsey101) 2ebfSItB0oM This is Buzzjack’s favourite Jess or Anne-Marie ballad! I’m personally not too big a fan of this as it feels quite manufactured into being ‘the winter ballad moment’ of her discography to show she’s a ‘well-rounded pop star’ but it’s a pleasant listen at least! This is also the first song to not receive a 0 and we had to wait all the way up until 9th place to get that LOL. This was released as the 2015 Children In Need charity single which would’ve helped boost its sales and chart position thanks to the extra promotion it receives on the show’s broadcast. I do appreciate that Jess’ vocals sound better than ever here and that she delivers the song with passion, both belting and softly singing to show the light and dark in the song.
July 12, 20205 yr Author #8 - Jess Glynne 'Right Here' (Avg. 7.25) High Scores: (10 - Nina West, George.keh, Electroboy, Josh!, Scene 9 - Davidson, Dan-G, Dexton) Low Scores: (0 - Lee Wallace) SSrCaX8ttuw Jess’ debut solo single! This came out right in the middle of the 2014 deep-house trend and was a stand-alone single for quite a while, we were not to know the Jess domination that would follow! This feels fairly forgotten about in the public eye as Jess has followed this up with much bigger hit singles since, however I think this is a benefit to this song as overplay has not ruined its appeal. It’s a low key bop and I enjoy the trumpets with the deep house beat that make for quite a cool single. This is the highest song not to receive an 11 which is quite easy to see as it doesn’t stand out as a highlight but it is a very solid part of her discography.
July 12, 20205 yr Author #7 - Jess Glynne 'Don't Be So Hard On Yourself' (Avg. 7.546) High Scores: (11 - Bre, LL Jord 7, Riser 10 - George.keh, Josh!, Klaus, Dexton, Scene) Low Scores: (-1 - Leww) THeLVhU53ow So this is how you do a self-empowerment anthem! This my personal favourite of Jess’ solo tracks, building on the success of Hold My Hand, this carried on the upbeat dance-pop backed by heavy piano chords and strings formula that worked so well before. The song talks about how we all struggle at times and how important it is to pick yourself up afterwards. This is also the highest song to receive a -1, why are you such a hater Leww? I particularly enjoy this song as this was the theme to a CBBC series based around the goings on at an ice rink and told the stories of young athletes across a number of ice sports (get that mainstream exposure synchro!) I’m pretty sure I featured in the background at some point at one of the national championships (yas).
July 12, 20205 yr The 0 given to Rumour Mill because it hadn’t been listened to :( Glad to see it make top 10 though! I actually like all of 10-7
July 12, 20205 yr Author #6 - Route 94 feat. Jess Glynne 'My Love' (Avg. 7.578) High Scores: (11 - Leww, Scene 10 - Tawdry Hepburn, George.keh, Davidson, Chapman, Dan-G, vibe) Low Scores: (1 - JosephStyles) BS46C2z5lVE Just missing out on the top 5 is Route 94’s one and only chart hit which I still can’t work out if Jess’ vocals have been pitched down a tad or not?? This was one of the songs at the fore-front of the deep-house trend and managed to make it all the way to #1. Making this Jess’ second #1 only 3 weeks after her first #1, Rather Be, had left the top spot. This is one of those songs that you either get or don’t get at all with very few middling scores received. It’s unusual in Jess’ discography as it mainly relies on the piano instrumental and brooding synths rather than her vocals which are more an accompaniment to the track rather than essential. It can be seen as quite sparse as there are not many lyrics and of those that are present, they are repeated multiple times throughout the song.
July 12, 20205 yr Author Just before we crack on with the top five, here's a reminder of the remaining songs! Alarm Ciao Adios Rather Be (with Clean Bandit) Real Love (with Clean Bandit) Rockabye (with Clean Bandit & Sean Paul) One of these songs will be crowned our winner! :o 3 remain for Anne-Marie whereas Jess only has 2 songs remaining.
July 12, 20205 yr I actually only discovered 'Rumour Mill' through this rate so I'm pleased I managed to get it top 10 at the last minute. :cheer: One of AM's finer moments.
July 12, 20205 yr Author I actually only discovered 'Rumour Mill' through this rate so I'm pleased I managed to get it top 10 at the last minute. :cheer: One of AM's finer moments. It pushed Not Letting Go out which had been top 10 for nearly the whole thing. Goes to show the importance of each and every vote!
July 12, 20205 yr It pushed Not Letting Go out which had been top 10 for nearly the whole thing. Goes to show the importance of each and every vote! No loss then. The Clean Bandit slayage. :o
July 12, 20205 yr Not these results going severely downhill at the last moment xx Yay for 'Don't Be So Hard On Yourself' correctly being Jess' highest song as lead artist I guess but disappointing that it isn't even in the top 5 and has come behind 'Ciao Adios'. Mildly amusing that in a rate of Anne-Marie and Jess Glynne, there are more Clean Bandit songs in the top 5 than Jess Glynne songs, and the same as the number of Anne-Marie songs. All Clean Bandit top 3 incoming?
July 12, 20205 yr Don't Be So Hard On Yourself deserved higher! Not a huge fan of 'My Love' but it's not bad.
July 12, 20205 yr Author #5 - Anne-Marie 'Alarm' (Avg. 7.741) High Scores: (11 - Dexton, Jack 10 - Cameron, UltraBeKind, Frenchie, George.keh, JosephStyles, Josh!) Low Scores: (2 - smidsey101) r3RXHOTMmLw Time for Anne-Marie’s solo breakthrough, this was the song that brought her name into the public conscious and helped pave the way for her future hits. It managed to peak at #16 in the UK charts yet it stayed in the top 40 for 20 weeks which is almost unheard of these days thanks to ACR. I remember this coming out and thinking it sounded quite different to what the other female popstars were releasing at the time and this still has a fresh sound to it 4 years later. This song is about the moment a relationship begins to be questioned and the alarm bells go off and being strong enough to cut yourself off from that toxic person. I think this is one of the strongest choruses of any of her songs, it’s catchy and tells a story at the same time and doesn’t rely on the drop to make it memorable. I actually saw Anne-Marie perform an acoustic version of this live at a festival in 2016 just as it was blowing up to less than 100 people and it really showed off the strength of the songwriting. Little did I know it had a team including Steve Mac and Ina Wroldsen behind it!
July 12, 20205 yr I find 'Take Me Home' quite unpleasant to listen to, it really sounds like she's straining hard to hit notes she can't quite reach. I never quite "got" 'Don't Be So Hard On Yourself' either. 'Right Here' I hold in higher regard now than I did then, but I just love Gorgon City's sound. Also 'My Love' is
July 12, 20205 yr Love 'Alarm'!. 'Real Love' is by far my least favourite here now so hoping for that to be out next...
July 12, 20205 yr I’ve never got into Alarm, it’s just very... there for me Real Love shouldn’t be Top 5 either, I like it but I’ve gone of it a bit since its release. It’s quite basic when you think about it ‘real real real real love’
