oh love love Missing, well deserved #1, it's on a league of its own compared to the likes of Robson Jerome and all those #1s from 1995.

had been a low-key EBTG fan since the late 80s, I remember I bought Idlewild and The Language of Life

but passed on the next two (Worldwide and Amplified Heart)

I really never ever would have imagined them re-inventing themselves as a dance act :o

Missing deserved to be #1

Both 1996 and 1997 have no clear favourites to top the list. Re-listening will prove crucial.

Such a great #1! I still love it now but I remember it took a few weeks to fully grow on me at the time, age has been very kind to it also as it still sounds fresh today.

Can’t argue with your #2 either, definitely a well written song and the clear highlight of their first years together. I still like Gangsta’s Paradise but can’t disagree that it pails in comparison to the others you’ve listed, especially Regulate which is my favourite track ever from its genre.

Regulate is amazing. It's so strange that such a laid back song is about being held at gun-point and escaping because your friend turns up and shoots everyone. :arrr:

The only possible #1 there could be for 1995.

IIRC it made #69 on its original release in 94, and they were dropped by their label (Blanco Y Negro). Then after a Todd Terry remix gained traction in the clubs it was re-released and made #3 here and #2 in America, a huge turnaround. Obviously it's quite a sad and mournful track that is full of regret, Tracy Thorn's vocals help to evoke that feeling I guess.

'You're long gone

But I can't move on'

Always gets me.

I forgot Missing went to #2 in the US, that's huge

I don't think the original album version of Missing was very good, the lyrics were amazing but the production was very lacklustre

so that remix really brought the song to life.

What is there to say? More reggae. Can we just stop having reggae that isn't by people from the Caribbean?

We're supposed to hate this, right? I don't. It just sort of exists.

I can cope with the obnoxiousness of Wannabe and 2 Become 1 is passable but this had very little to interest me at all.

Wrong vid for Gina G ;) plus you’ve missed 9th for 96! :o

Fabulous winner for 95!

An approximation of a JX song with the edges shaved off. It should really have one Eurovision. It was energetic and there hadn't been an energetic winner for over a decade.

The follow up was even more JX.

Sorted! Thanks :D

I bought Saturday Night and I still love it. Sorry not sorry!

I still like it too. Very catchy.

This is rather pleasant, and not as dull as I remembered. These Spice Girls songs are holding up well. Mel C is usually a pleasure to listen to and that's no different here. :melaniec:

Once can only presume that they're singing about a kettle in this line

Be a little bit wiser baby, put it on, put it on ;)

Another surprisingly strong effort. I anticipated that this would be at the bottom of the 10. The video is really great. Effervescent and disarmingly enjoyable.

I've always had a troubled relationship with this song, given that it stopped A Design for Life debuting at number 1. It's a fine song and was the 3rd most played song on the radio in 1996.

I'm not sure how I'd cope with a whole album of that voice.

I was certainly not a fan. Viva Forever remains my favourite.

Obviously, this is perfect. However, when I listen to it now, it's nostalgic feelings I have, rather than the music moving me. At this stage it's the background music that I like rather than main piano riff.

I found it very difficult to choose between this and Children for runner-up spot.

When this was released, much was made of the disappointing slow down of the track after the intro. I rather like the whole song, in retrospect. Obvious Bowie influences abound - Space Oddity and Rebel, Rebel in particular.
