Mel also showed Reason some love in her latest Billboard interview:

The Deep Cut That’s Become a Surprise Fan Favorite:

“Home,” from my second solo record, Reason. I wrote it with David Arnold, a magnificent songwriter-composer who's done many Bond soundtracks. The original production that David did was very Bond-esque and quite orchestral and cinematic. But on the album, it was produced by a guy called Damian LeGassick [to better fit] with the rest of the songs. For some reason the fans just love it. I got so many messages about it. They’d be shouting it to me all through the set.

Love that she praised such a great track! One of her best, for sure and I would hope she would bring it back one day.

The Song That Best Showcases Me as a Lyricist:

I’m going to go back to Reason again with the title track. It’s about my meeting my little girl’s dad. Inspiration is so weird, I often don’t feel responsible for the work that I’ve done. You look back and go: How did I do that? It’s almost like -- not to sound like a twat -- you’re a vessel, this conduit, and whatever it is just comes through you. I’ve always enjoyed expressing things that are very personal and very raw, and sometimes you know when you’ve done it, like, ooh, yeah, I really got it across. That’s a song I feel very proud of. I wrote it with Peter-John Vettese, who’s this incredible songwriter and virtuoso pianist -- some of his biggest hits were with Annie Lennox, like “Walking on Broken Glass” and “Why.” He draws the brilliance out of you.

  • Listening again to the album (and some b-sides) this morning, I find that the album has aged a bit better than I expected too. Not sure I will ever invest in this vinyl unless I can find it for cheap

Yes! Justice for Reason. So many great tracks during this era that doesn't get enough love. Love To You is one of my fav from this era.
Yes, justice for reason is great to see, as I've said a few times it's my fave album from mel and I've never understood why so many people were/are so disappointed by it.

Most fans have a negative view of Reason because it was a commercial failure. It's also a more laid back, chill album. Spice Girls fans were expecting Northern Star 2.0 and were disappointed that wasn't the case with Reason.

There were plenty of mistakes made with the Reason era. The track listing, the single choices, Mel's image, etc. Had those things been correct, Reason probably could have sold half of what Northern Star did. Instead, it sold a measly 100,000 copies.

Was Wonderland ever released apart from on the DVD? I swear it was included in a special edition somewhere but I cant remember or find it now...

Wonderland appeared on two CD-R promos according to Discogs! It seems its only commercial release was the DVD though. Quite annoying. The only thing worse than a DVD exclusive track is a cassette or vinyl exclusive track lol 🙈

I always hated the DVD only tracks. What a waste!

Thanks, I will keep an eye out for those promo CDs as it seems those would be the only ones I could get with it on it ah. One of them has an interesting tracklist:

1 Here It Comes Again

2 Reason

3 On The Horizon

4 Do I

5 Yeh Yeh Yeh

6 Lose Myself In You

7 Home

8 Soul Boy

9 Water

10 Let's Love

11 Positively Somewhere

12 Wonderland

I might try and organise a playlist like this and see how it flows!

On The Horizon sooo doesn't deserve the ire it gets. I didn't get Here It Comes Again when it first came out. All her Northern Star stuff was so interesting. I couldn't believe Mel had taken that long a break to come back with something so bland. HICA has grown on me majorly over the years. I like it now. But. Putting myself in my 2003 mindframe, it was On the Horizon that won me back over to Mel and got me interested in Reason. I was convinced OTH *had* to at least perform better than HICA on the charts. It was just that much more commercial.

Here It Comes Again was released 18 years ago today. The Reason era is officially an adult :o :heehee:

Here it comes again is awful, it's just so drab and plods along with zero melody.

For my money Positively Somewhere was the best song on reason and the obvious first single. On the horizon is 2nd but they are very similar sounding.

I'd have gone -

Positively Somewhere

Yeh Yeh Yeh

On the horizon/Melt

As the singles run.

Why does she hate 'On The Horizon' so much? It's a good song, she's certainly released worse.

I think after how the first single and the album initially performed, it was going to take nothing short of a miracle for anything to reach the top 10 after that.

I can't remember which interviews/videos she's spoken about On the Horizon (I've not watched this latest one, but she's definitely spoken about it in the past). From memory, I think she's said things along the lines of... that she associates the song with being the moment when things started going wrong with her career, and the start of the breakdown in her relationship with Virgin records? I feel like she's said at some point in time that it wasn't the song she wanted to be a single, so perhaps there's resentment there because she feels ike whatever she wanted to choose instead would have done better?

From my perspective as a fan, I've always thought it was by far the most obvious choice for second single and I feel like anything else chosen as the second single might have even done worse?

On the Horizon is honestly well within my top half of her singles discography, so I wish that after 18 years(!) she'd have a change of heart. But I suppose it's her prerogative to always have ill feeling towards that song. If it conjures up such negative emotions I guess it's hard to dissociate from them.

Positively Somewhere is definitely a highlight track of mine, but I'm not sure if it's a first single moment for me.

Actually that wouldnt be a bad singles run at all -_-

^ agree, it’s my favourite single from the Reason era. I can’t at fans who dislike it just because Melanie C doesn’t too 🙈
she thinks its a good song but wrong for her

I'm sure it's why a lot of fans like Here it comes again too because she likes it. I can't imagine anyone caring for it if it was by some random indie guitar band which is what it's always sounded like to me

People see different things when they look on the horizon.

Is there an original arramgement for Home? Had she releaded that with thr original production on a James Bong soundtrack, that could have done well. Otherwise, just like Forever, this album was missing any hits.
