Liking this after one listen! It's very grand and epic sounding and lyrically it's astute and quite moving. I can't help but hear it from an LGBT perspective or someone struggling to find their way while being in the closet:

I wonder if I'm being real

Do I speak my truth or do I filter how I feel?

I wonder, wouldn't it be nice

To live inside a world that isn't black and white?

I wonder what it's like to be my friends

I wonder why I'm so afraid

Of saying something wrong, I never said I was a saint

I wonder, when I cry into my hands

I'm conditioned to feel like it makes me less of a man

Not saying that is what Shawn is singing about and I don't want to assume or place a narrative on him by any means, it's just how I read the lyrics. It makes sense when you attach it to the lyrics and I like how the song can be intepreted this way as it makes it all-encompassing and multi-layered.

In short: powerful lyrics and a great delivery by him. I'm a fan!

Hmm..

For me, I think this is to 'In My Blood' as to what 'If I Can't Have You' is to 'There's Nothing Holding Me Back'. It's a solid song, but it sounds like a slightly inferior version to me (I'm ready to be alone in that thinking, but it's what I feel on first few listens)

There's a slight Harry Styles feel to this too, especially first era Harry.

The video is excellent. Agreed about the movie quality of it.

Interesting perspective! :o I hadn't thought about it like that myself. For me, the lyrics seem to represent feeling as though you're not as great a friend (or lover, maybe) to somebody as they are to you - wondering what it must feel like for somebody else to love you. But I can totally see the LGBTQ+ aspect of it too. I think this'll be one of those songs that will be interpreted in so many different ways by lots of fans.

So glad you're enjoying it though Bal

Glad to see it's risen into the UK iTunes Top 10 *.* Will be very interesting to see how this performs in its first day on Spotify.

Spotify update:

Worldwide: #16 (NEW) [+3,415,334 plays]

US: #13 (NEW) [+1,080,092 plays]

Canada: #7 (NEW) [+195,987 plays]

#29 in the UK, a bit disappointing I won't lie! That said, I suppose it's closest to In My Blood of all his singles, and that didn't set Spotify alight really. In fact, it only ever got a top 10 peak because of an advert boosting it on iTunes!

It's not career-ending and it's not a complete failure, it should be on for a top 20 debut and it'll still have the potential to climb going forward ^_^

Eek i actually expected this to debut much better, iTunes sales are so low that I expected him to have a lead over Miley then drop to #2 today.

It’s only #60 on Apple Music too, I can see this debuting around #28-32 which is still disappointing for a comeback! It’s not doing too well in the US either!

The song on the other hand, it’s okay but one of his weakest for me, the video is good though!

I think maybe expectations are a bit high because of Señorita. Over a year later and not doing too dissimilar to In My Blood... I don't think that's bad?

It's worth remembering Senorita's instant success was more of an outlier for Shawn - big name collab, viral video, the romance between him and Camila, and it's a more hit / streaming friendly song than Wonder. It makes sense, but the #29 debut still looks disappointing! :(

Ah well, we still have a whole era ahead of us to look forward to! Honestly, the commercial success isn't the be all and end all - just hearing how meaningful this project is to him is fulfilling!

Up to #2 on US iTunes!

Dove Cameron, Niall Horan, Justin Bieber, Taylor Hill, JP Saxe, Ashe, Ryan Tedder, Jon Vinyl, and more also commenting on his Insta posts re. Wonder!! All the love

@ Lee

For reference, Shawn's first week positions post-breakthrough:

31 Treat You Better

58 Mercy (as a promo track initially)

07 There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back

13 In My Blood

30 Lost In Japan (promo single at first)

35 Youth (promo single)

09 If I Can't Have You

02 Senorita

Of those, Lost In Japan and Youth only spent 1 week top 40. If I Can't Have You peaked in week 1 but spent 4 weeks top 10. The others all climbed to their peaks. I think Shawn's in with a good shout of getting a top 10 debut with this, with the potential to go higher? Especially as this is his first (proper, not counting the Lover remix) release post-Senorita.

Definitely looks like he's in with a shout of climbing after week 1 going on past form.

It debuted around where I expected it to in the UK and I was ready to say that was good! But y'all are disappointed? I'm so out of touch with the charts nowadays lmao.

I am disappointed it didn't go top 10 in the US though. I woulda thought low top 10 for it, but maybe I just over estimated his US pull?

But yeah, I don't think it's a disaster and is a strong start. I'll be surprised if this doesn't repeak a couple of weeks in.
