October 9, 20204 yr It’s a 6/10 moment for me. Nice enough but a bit meh. Fun to see it at number 2 on iTunes though.
October 9, 20204 yr It was like when they yapped about LM5 being all about female empowerment and body positivity yet they got involved in the Nicki/Cardi fued Cardi was the one that brought them into that mess when she claimed publicly that the girls had Nicki as a second option. Had they said nothing this is what would’ve stuck in people’s minds after years of begging for a Nicki verse. Saying as if it invalidates everything they said and the album’s about is not it.
October 9, 20204 yr i agree at the beneath them comments - this is album 6 + we’re still getting tracks like this! it feels like the label have panicked + regressed. there’s also no real cohesive feel between the 3 tracks we’ve now heard. i’d hoped this was just a one-off but looking at some of the titles on the album, i feel like i’m going to end up disappointed with a fair few.
October 9, 20204 yr I think it’s a bit naive to say this sound is due to the label panicking especially since it was a song Jade and Leigh did in July of 2019, pretty sure this is just the sound they went for with this track.

October 9, 20204 yr Author It does sound like a song that could be found on Get Weird, tbf. But for me, I'm liking it a lot (def not as much as BUS or Holiday) for now. I completely get the regression critiques, but to me, I think (well hope *eyes*) that it is/was intentional due to the content of the song. Aha. (It purposefully sounds like a 1D song to me ) For now, I think this'll end up around mid-low tier of my faves from the album, but I don't mind it as a grat track.
October 9, 20204 yr For me this is pretty instant, not a fan of the "I don't give a what!" But works an an album track completely.
October 9, 20204 yr The actual content of the song is a bit jarring for me, I understood Syco and LM had creative differences but it’s not as if their output has been drastically different since leaving them? I mean, BUS and Holiday could easily have been on the last two records?

That’s not what I said..... Just stated that it probably wasn’t the label’s decision, but the girls themselves, so it’s their taste you should blame, not an alleged label panic.

I mean, BUS and Holiday could easily have been on the last two records? I think it more has to do with the curation of LM5 if anything, that's when their creative differences really started to show. Syco more than likely wanted a Glory Days-vibe whilst Little Mix wanted what was LM5, still pop but a bit moodier and a few experimentations here and there (would've worked if we didn't get absolute duds like American Boy / LAGR) You can tell that with songs like Strip, WLM, Notice, Motivate, Woman's World, The Cure etc they wanted to push past the boundaries of their typical "love and break-up" songs, although I feel like LM5s shortcomings were not taking that all the way, which was probably Syco wanting certain songs to cover common themes that Little Mix known were known for. I don't think Not a Pop Song is groundbreaking at all, but is it worth some of the slating that I've seen? No. The production is gorgeous and quite honestly, it's a very modern sounding song, those saying it belongs on GW and sounding regressive, I don't hear that at all. There's a very strong Louis Bell-on a good day influence (which I assume is Tayla's doing because it's very American sometimes) My only issue with the song is the "I don't give a what", I'd rather they say f*ck or just say "I don't give a" sorry this turned into an essay lol Edited October 9, 20204 yr by jsweetxe
October 9, 20204 yr This. 'Not A Pop Song' is literally a pop song. It’s weird - I could understand if it was this song trying to be ironic or for effect but everything they have done since leaving Syco are just the same LM sound

October 9, 20204 yr This. 'Not A Pop Song' is literally a pop song. But the aim of the song wasn't to be another genre, it just wasn't a pop song about their usual themes. I agree it is a bit annoyingly contradictory with break-up song being RIGHT there, but they're talking about the song in general, not their whole album/era/image. If you want a song about love/heartbreak/club life you won't find it in *this* specific song, basically.

The lyrics out with the chorus does suggest they are talking more about their band imagine in general though I thought! It’s such a strange one!
October 9, 20204 yr I think everyone’s taking the song a bit too literally. It’s just a fun ‘joke’ which they did last year after everything that went on with Syco/Simon. It’s more about how labels (Simon) creates these groups/individuals and places them in the standard box, telling them what they should and shouldn’t do. It wouldn’t surprise me if someone at Syco said something along the lines of ‘This is not a pop song’ referencing something they wanted to release?!! Edited October 9, 20204 yr by Mr. C. Joel
October 9, 20204 yr Author This. 'Not A Pop Song' is literally a pop song. :lol:Is this not all a part of the irony of it though? Also, the lyrics are literally: "This ain't another pop song, 'bout fallin' in love Or a party song, 'bout drinks and drugs" So it's not really saying it's not a pop song, just not a pop song about love, parties or drinking etc.. Kind of an Oxymoron. (Well that's what I've taken from it aha)
October 9, 20204 yr Author It reminds me of You Gotta Not. One that I think isn't an initial favourite with people but it's ridiculously carefree so it's insanely infectious.
